What can you do after ICB and AAT?

In today's video I am going to talk you through all of the different options available to you after the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Diploma or after you have completed the ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) Diploma.
There are so many options available to you after you qualify from either the AAT and ICB for instance you can work in practice or work in industry, you could go onto the study CIMA (Charted Institute of Management Accounting), ACA (Association of Charted Accountants), ACCA (Association of Charted Certified Accountants) or CIPFA (Charted Institute of Public Financial Accountants). It really is time to start looking at which path you want to take and where you want to be in your career.
If you have any questions at all please feel free to pop those into the comments section below :)

I’m studying AAT Level 2 and 3 online, but my course doesn’t include exams. So do you know how or where I can book/take the exams I need to take, so I can get the qualifications?

Hey, really interesting video! I'm interested in becoming a self employed bookkeeper but I'm not sure on a few things. Does one need the ICB to become a bookkeeper? What sort of income potential is there and would it be as high as an ACA accountant for example? Keep up the good work 👍

Hi Charlie thank you it's lovely to hear from you :) you don't need to have the ICB to become a bookkeeper but you do need to have a practice licence with a professional body. I have found that the ICB is more geared towards someone wanting to run their own practice but that's very much my own opinion having undertaken the aat myself. There are certain stipulations with having a practice licence with any professional body which I would certainly look into before choosing such as with the aat you have to have had so many years experience working in practice in the last few years for example x in terms of earning potential I know bookkeepers who have qualified with the ICB who earn six figures so it's certainly a lucrative path if it's something you wish to do and is comparable to what you can earn with ACA but with working for yourself x

Hi there. Thank you for your videos I'm currently studying AAT level 3 and trying to get a job to put that in practice. All jobs offers I get are for purchase ledger clerk or acc payable assistant. Is this a good start or should I look elsewhere for a career in bookkeeping / accounting. Thank you 😊

Hi hun yes starting in purchase or sales is a good foot in the door and does help you gain a better understanding of that side of the business however if you want a broader role looking at an overall picture of finance it might be best to hold out for an accounts assistant role or similar :)

Hi , I am struggling to finding out which jobs I can get once I've got my AAT level 3 Diploma in accounting. Alot of role require experience, how are you meant to get experience when you are just starting out. I do have 6 months admin experience, good communication skills ( customer service 18 years experience). What roles can I go into ? Can you elaborate on working in practice please?

Hi hun yes I agree a lot of roles do want experience but I would say to that, that experience can be found in other areas than accounting and bookkeeping so if you have any customer relations knowledge, Microsoft excel knowledge, ability to use Microsoft Office etc. X I wouldn't be put off applying to a role where you don't have all of the experience they are asking for. I personally have never gone for a role that I have 100 percent of everything they have asked for and I think that's important to take into account and instead simply try and show how your skills in other areas will help in your career and ask if they would be open to talking to you with your current experience x

Hi Ryan if you wish to go self employed I would say perhaps the ICB, CPAA or the aat hun are more than sufficient however it depends later what services you want to offer. I would highly recommend looking at the services provided under each licence with each body and that will help you to make a decision x
