40 now, and everything is paid for. Fortunately, I had a college economics teacher who taught me a lesson when I was 18 years old. That lesson was: you can't buy something else for every purchase you make. Having multiple sources of income is prudent, as is living within your means. I have a 13-year-old vehicle because it is all I need, I like it, and I can do whatever I want with it. My net worth is $900k, and I can pay my bills without stress, but I don't live like I have that. I have no complaints.

I fully agree; I'm 56 years old and recently retired with approximately 1.2 million in outside retirement funds, no debt, and very few dollars in retirement funds in comparison to my portfolio balance over the last three years. To be honest, the financial advisor's role can only be ignored, not dismissed. Therefore do your research to get a reputable one and that should be any individuals main route into the market.

Yes, I'm in my mid-50s, and a few years back, I moved my investments to my wife's wealth manager. While I haven't caught up to her long-term gains, my current earnings and the growth of my retirement fund, compared to just relying on the 401(k), are pretty satisfying.

I love watching fellow FIRE people like this who live abroad or travel a lot who make their income in dollars and live in a cheaper country. It is so so smart. I am currently FIRE in an expensive state, but I have somehow lowered my expenses so much that it works out for me here. I am single and would love to meet other FIRE people and make friends

Yes the enjoyment of every moment and the happiness of the moments and friends and family 🌺🌺

Stopping to smell the roses or whatever smells good to you is really a good thing to keep in mind. In the US because of the Canadian forest fires we have been getting some really pretty sunsets that are very red or redish orange. I still enjoy the sunset no matter what is happening or how our sunsets are affected by other factors. Thanks for sharing.

Also when I was in the Army I used to save all my money when I got paid. Also my pay would double when I was stationed overseas, so once I retired I had tons of money in my savings account. Jean I'm so happy that you are giving tips to prepare for retirement. Jean you would be a good financial advisor in my opinion Jean sweetheart. Also you have great people skills Jean sweetheart.

Hard to find core pursuits when I work so much and when I come home I just play video games for an hour or two and sleep before I do it again tomorrow. One of the biggest issues I think I'll have if I ever do retire. Also with retirement, I am supporting my parents right now they have no savings and retired and not easy when other people depend on you.

Actually, there is some very good advice in here. The point I like most is courage. We are just starting our "early" retirement journey... and as I approach 2 weeks left to work, fear is an emotion that comes up strongly. The what if's. I'm leaving behind a solid and lucrative career. IT is hard to say "enough is enough", if we keep going it's just more money that may not be necessary. Switching off that normal programming people are conditioned with.

Is very rare to retire so early, you are the smart and daring and professional, official retirement age is 60 +/-2 internationally. If you have a family, you hope to retire at 62 diminish more! So your advise, is good and encouraging everyone to work/plan on it to achieve retirement goals. But no one can reach your level, If you still have a parent behind to take care or family/children to take care!

Jean, I came back to Canada from a trip to Singapore (2 days) and Bali (9 days). I went to some of your food spots from one of your Singapore videos and it was phenomenal. was the value of core pursuits the measurement of their happiness? so in the study you mentioned, (I might have missed the citation for it), what was the measurement of happiness? The lower number of 1.9 versus the other number was confusing for me

This is a great video as I am about to become a proud member of the FIRE community. One thing I have never heard anyone discussed is should an expat plan for a "repatriation" toward the end of their life as obtaining a PR in Thailand or Indonesia as a retiree is nearly possible? What are the considerations for a return to homeland scenario? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

nice! thank you for leaving this comment that's actually a really good thing to think about and discuss! I'll appreciate any views from others, but personally since my hubs is from Russia, we've discussed that when we r very old and no longer surfing we may be happy to move back to Russia, get some land for cheap somewhere and grow our own food and just live quietly.

Or plan to get old and die in your adopted country. Plan your finances to last you until the end. Very inexpensive home care can be obtained in Thailand and other low cost of living countries. This could be a much better option than a nursing home in say, the US.

I feel compelled to mention Jean, that one of the people skills you speak of include the ability to tell people to go away. It's amazing that when we retire (especially on government pensions) people develop an uncanny ability to make themselves a burden on the retiree. I'm not suggesting turning into a cold-hearted SOB, but enhanced due diligence is needed. I can't say exactly why this happens - if it is a natural tendency to hit on seniors or foreigners, or if people see retirement payments from whatever source as "free money", but this definitely happens...Retirre enjoy thyself, but en garde!... 😏

oh i definitely have to agree with that - thanks for the contribution to the discussion Bart. It's really true - we have to be able to say no when it's neceessary. Sometimes it's not about money. A lot of times its also about others encroaching on your time and freedom in retirement. Sadly.

HELLO i know i want to move to bali but i have some concerns i am a Lyme disease survivor and have chronic pain which requires pain management using opioids blood pressure meds etc, i live a good quality of life because they allow me to function . i live in FLORIDA I DO I GET MY MEDICATIONS AND EVEN I I WAS TO travel back to the states to see my doctors it would be monthly i get a annuity every month I'm a government retiree so im good on money i just don't know about the health care i have great insurance too

You may mention that you retired on your own but don’t hold retire visa because that has an age limit to qualify.. some people may think that they can apply for retire visa in younger age.

@@qj2003fallRetirement visa, as mentioned, have a age requirement and allow for long stays without having to leave the country. For example, here in Thailand there are the O and OA visas available to expats at least 50 years old. These visas can be extended yearly indefinitely. The visas and extensions have financial requirements that you have to meet each year.

Being a Singaporean I believe Singapore is 1 of the place that use us workers into the early grave.

I mirror the trades of "Janet Santa Sherry" a US SEC & FINRA regulated Investment Adviser and she has been very consistent. Since, my returns has grown at a tremendous pace unlike I can say for my IRA which has been trudging along. My holdings only mirrors what she tradess,not just on some particular industries of my choosing. She has some interesting things to say about the state of algorithmic trading today. Obviously I am seeing the results.

Sorry, but I can not imagine that you are retired at the age of 38. Do you have already spared money for the next 10, 20. 30, etc. years so you don't have to work anymore?. You have expenses, right?, so do you have enough money to say you are retired and pay your daily expenses and probably travel?. I don't understand what do you mean then with "I am retired".

We F.I.R.E.d (financial independence, retire early) at age 38 for me & my hubs was 35. Its been 2 years. We did that by saving up our money to make investments like rental properties that yield us passive income so we don't have to work jobs now but we still have money every month to live off.

You’re a former lawyer but what did your husband use to do?

Hi Jean from Ubud :). We've been in Bali for a little over a week now. It's so much busier than when I was here last year! Just want to say we went to eat at Goemerot in Denpasar as recommended by one of your food videos and it was really nice. Ayam Sambal Matah was super spicy like you said 😅 We're also going to follow your trail in Lovina in a few days! I definitely need courage to invest. I'm super risk averse. I've tried shares a few times, made some money, lost some money. No chance of buying property. It's just unaffordable in Australia and I also don't like the feeling of having a mortgage or debt in general. Personally, I actually wouldn't mind working until 70 if I'm physically able and employable, but the key is to do what I enjoy, or at least don't hate going to 🤣. I've seen too many retired senior people who enjoy retirement for like a year then become depressed, bored, have lost their self-esteem, or simply got too much time in their hands so they nag their family a lot coz they don't have their own life anymore. I've also seen this happen to some friends who voluntarily chose to become a stay-home mum/housewife. I think working does have its benefits, but again, it has to be something we enjoy or at least don't dislike doing it.

Oh HEEEEEYYYYYY!!!!! Ure in Bali!!! Omg actually we hv been on the road w my parents the past week and were just in Ubud a few days back!! Guess we didn’t cross paths 🤭🦋 glad u enjoyed Goemerot I haven’t been back in a while we keep trying new stuff but ya Ayam Sambal Matah is always bloody fantastic isn’t it? I love Sambal Matah anything so much actually haha 🤭🤭🤭 investing isn’t just about the stock market though, u may just have to poke around and try a few things and really find what suits ur temperament and personality. I tried day trading before for a year - I made so much money at first but then also gave it back to market plus a bit more all in the end and the emotional ups and downs were so much to go thru. So eventually I changed my investing style until I found what suits. There’s also stuff like bonds, for me esp government bonds cos SG govt is quite a safe bet. And for us real estate is something familiar n what we r experienced in and we enjoy doing - we like building n designing, n then we quite enjoy taking care of tenants. So this is what we worked out. But it’s different for everyone. Maybe urs may lie in business? Maybe something u love, that u enjoy doing, and that also can be built up into something that brings in an income over the longer term. That’s what we wd also love to do. To start a new business that we wd enjoy. But we’re so conservative we’re still taking time to look around after two years. But anyway I hope you’re having the most amazing time in Bali!!! Oh by the way in Lovina we stayed at Lovina Beach Club recently and it was really nubbad too! Beautiful infinity pool! I hope u get to see loads of dolphins!! Enjoy!!!

haha that's more my investing style now but when i first started i was into day trading and swing trading. It suits some people - i do hv friends who r v successful off that - but i can't take the pressure and the number watching lol
