Investigating crime report maps in any given city reveals that certain neighborhoods have disproportionate amounts of crime to an exponential degree. Perhaps having the military patrol high crime neighborhoods will bring peace to those neighborhoods seeing as how the police are ineffective at keeping crime at bay. I've long lost patience with the failures of our nation to solve problems and approach all political angles and issues as a fixer of problems. We need clear and direct solutions, not waffling or weak handed approaches. Ending the era of limp wristed politics and instead focusing on direct, hard, scientific solutions to problems should be the goal. Fundamentally I blame libertarianism and the libertarian mindset for most problems in the world. Anti-vaxxers are one thing, but abolish the police is another bad idea just as bad as anti-vaxxers. All of these toxic movements are destabilizing society to the point where cracks are starting to appear because people are promulgating bad ideas to an exponential degree, which results in deteriorating conditions... Rising crime, political destabilization, economic disorder, etc.

Best indictment of the whole "good guy with a gun solves bad guy with a gun" argument is the 2019 shooting in Dayton, Oh. A man opened fire on a crowded outdoor bar patio and cops responded quickly and had shot the guy 32 seconds after he opened fire. THIRTY TWO SECONDS between the first shot being fired and him being killed by the good guys with guns. In that time he killed nine and injured 17 more. And men who are found guilty of domestic violence who are forced into counseling, only about 2% make any progress... So let's step back, and ask why men are growing up to become violent toward women? IMHO it starts with these words: "big boys don't cry". Forcing little boys to suppress their feelings rather than learning how to grow emotionally, just might be a problem... Of course, if boys who have fathers who beat their mothers, and they grow up modeling that behavior, that is a problem too. Most cops assume firearms are possible but Stewart paints that a bleak story each time to lean toward officer safety...which wasn't he hating on cops in 2020-21? As a domestic violence survivor, me having a firearm would have backfired on me. Why? Because my ex always went through my things and if I hid anything, I would have been in more “trouble”. Also, he was quicker than me- he would likely get to my gun before me. My daughters school gave me a phone for emergencies only. They told me not to tell him. Had I NOT told him, he would have broke the phone when he found it (not if) and beat me. I had to tell him. At least though he knew it was from the school and that they were suspicious of him, so he likely wouldn’t have done anything to it. Or would have relied on me telling the school it fell in the toilet or our daughter broke it.

As someone who works in the DV field, thank you so much for highlighting this issue. In my state of Georgia, sadly, it is often a non-starter even with LE officers who are allies and work with DV advocates and organizations. It is so infuriating and heartbreaking at the same time. Courts also have a hard time disarming DV perpetrators who are making a living with a firearm (police officers, military, private security), for fear they will not be able to "make a living."

Off base, the Marine, faces double jeopardy. We do our best to enforce DV. Yes, the military has a higher rate then civilians. We offer counseling for both, it's up to the Marine to control him/her self. If not, consequences will follow. "Semper Fi"

Here in Colorado even if you are charged with anything DV, your guns are taken away. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Not sure why other states cannot get onboard with that. I support the right to have guns in the hands of the right people, but people who commit violent crimes, even while only charged, should not have access to guns. Honestly after serving in the military and having grown up around guns and hunters, it perplexes me why people who do purchase guns do not have mandatory training and safety awareness. If there is one thing that should have safety over done it is gun ownership. There should be a mandatory two week training done for anyone buying a gun. That is less then the amount i had prior to even going into the military.

@@BaiginLong Haha, when did I say that? It's already illegal to own a firearm if you have any domestic abuse felonies or misdemeanors. It's misleading to suggest that it isn't illegal like he does throughout this video. The people who want to take guns away are also the ones that have been pushing for and making bail "reforms" and letting out violent criminals over and over. Law makers and judges are undermining the criminal justice system and new laws for things that are already illegal won't change anything. Also the chart they showed for a second was extremely misleading. Jon says that studies show that more guns means more deaths but that chart specifically shows gun deaths. Switzerland is much higher on the chart than the UK even though they have 1/4th the murders that the UK has and the overall murder rate of the UK is much closer to the US than this chart shows. Just another example of people using statistics out of context to prove their improvable points.

If you have a history of multiple domestic violence complaints and convictions then it should be far more difficult, if not outright banned for you to have a gun. The key to reducing gun violence is reduce the gun ratios. The US has over 120 guns per 100 people. Most civilized nations have 40 guns per 100 people and under. Canada has 32 guns per 100 people. UK and Australia have much lower ratios. The gun lobby has fooled most Americans into thinking that guns protect you, when clearly having tons of easy access to guns creates more gun violence. If you study the origins of the 2nd amendment, it wasn't even intended as it's used today. The right to bear arms was not supposed to allow everyone to have access to guns. The right to bear arms was used to control the slave trade and control indians. Both these groups were excluded from having or using guns by the 2nd amendment, which made it legal for all americans to have guns and illegal for blacks and indians to have guns. They used the 2nd amendment to EXCLUDE others from having guns legally, not the other way around. Now the 2nd amendment is used by the gun lobby to make profits off all Americans, while the US has gun violence higher than many 3rd world countries.

Perfect balance of a sound, well reasoned argument about an important social issue, without spinning every systemic cultural problem into a catastrophe, and keeping on topic with relevant humor throughout the segment, rather than detouring into absurdist nonsense. Just great stuff. More people need to appreciate just how clear the leading indicators for violent outbursts are. Domestic Violence is a signal that the individual and family culture views violence as a normal form of social interaction, and a means to an end. And as always, theres an underlying socio-economic problem at the heart of domestic violence. "Lock them up" and "take their guns" are important measures for the end of the process flow, but the real change is made upstream, identifying why these young men and women are growing in environments that normalize violence and abuse.

Most liberals are actually very rational about guns. There are very few who advocate for a total ban on firearms and those very few people don't understand how impossible that would be in this country. It's okay to staunchly fight gun violence and still be an owner. I'm an Army veteran and fully support ownership, though I also think people should have mandatory training that is provided by the government and held to a very high standard because you shouldn't have to pay for a Constitutional right. I also am a responsible owner of several firearms and I do agree with Jon on this issue. As a former law enforcement officer I believe we do not need more gun laws but simply need to enforce the ones we have. I do however think gun owners should be required to receive proper gun safety training and obtain a permit to purchase a firearm. My wife and I both obtained our CCW permits even though she does not carry one I believed it important for her to have it. I am uncomfortable with people who should not be allowed to have a firearm, such as a convicted felon, purchase one from an individual. I personally would not sell a firearm to anyone who did not have a permit to carry one since a felon cannot obtain a permit. I know people go crazy over the constitutional carry idea but we need to be practical. Firearms are fine in the proper hands and I know that no law will prevent criminals from getting them but we could make it a little more difficult.

You cannot be shown 1 singular statistic without viewing all of the statistics surrounding Domestic Violence cases where one party protected their lives with one. More importantly, this entire debate is disenfranchised to begin with. To make a case that domestic violence perpetrators wouldn’t have been able to kill if they didn’t have a firearm, is suggestive that they were legally allowed to have one to begin with. Criminals don’t care about laws. I’m tempted to believe criminals don’t even care about the punishments anymore, because of (in my opinion) the lack of public display and severity. We need common sense reform, and the issue is not the firearm. Edit: let’s be clear, personally, I would never wish for a shootout. I pray I never have to use my firearm in self defense. • @archerj.maggott1372

That might be a possible way around the underlying problem, which is that state and local cops don't have to enforce the Gun Control Act of 1968 -- which is the federal law that says DV offenders may not buy or own guns -- because it is not written into the Constitution itself. It's thus their 10th Amendment right to refuse to enforce it. But yes, if a local judge tells them to, then that might be a different story, since they were ordered by the local court. Still, without state and local laws that say the same thing as the federal law, you're going to have lots of instances where local cops and/or judges don't want to take a DV offender's guns, and, since the 10th Amendment says they don't have to anyway, they may not do it, even when asked. Then, it will be voluntary for the offender to give up his guns, which is of course just another way of saying that he won't have to. He can likely also get a new gun through a private sale or a straw purchaser, even though if he tries to get one at a store, the NICS check will tell the dealer -- who is licensed through the ATF, and thus has federal (not local) law enforcement looking over his shoulder -- not to sell to him. Thus, the commercial dealer is the only likely barrier to the DV offender who wants to get a gun, and there are multiple ways around him.

@@archerj.maggott1372 I can only provide an example for Florida, and the law for dv says if an dv injunction is granted against you, you cannot be in possession of your guns. Some judges like to say it's not a must but a suggestion of the max that can be ordered against the abuser, but it's not. And when you remind them that it is not just a local state law but federal, they are more inclined to follow the law in fear of being appealed. You still have some judges who don't care and believe the survivor doesn't have the means to pay for an appeal. Doesn't hurt to be prepared at all levels, especially if you want to preserve the record for appeal. You are right, injunctions do little to protect the abused when law enforcement will not do their part in enforcing it. A lot of victims don't even know how to use the order to protect them selves. Lots of education is lacking in this area and you need all boots on the ground involved to find the holes and solutions for the holes. The problem is complex, and there is no one solution to the violence in this country. We need a task force that will look at all aspects of this problem. As a mental health provider, I can say that most of these people who engage in mass shootings do not use mental health services, they do not believe they have a problem. There are plenty of mentally ill people in other countries, but because of their gun control laws, this kind of violence does not happen. We are the only country in the world where we have shootings every day. We in mental health need to do more outreach and education about emotional regulation and help people understand and cope with their anger and rage. We also need to educate people about trauma and parenting but the field of mental health can only do so much, so we need to tackle this from every angle. It is my hope that people in power, people like Jon, and other celebrities will continue to speak up about this, and other leaders in government will step up and take action.
