What Being Hispanic and Latinx Means in the United States | Fernanda Ponce | TEDxDeerfield

Fernanda provides a first person account of identity--addressing stereotypes and assumptions, and inviting the audience to dig deeper into the Latinx experience in the United States. Fernanda addresses the role of Latinx people in shaping the culture, politics, and economy of the USA.
Fernanda was born and raised in Chicago, IL by Mexican immigrant parents, and grew up constantly surrounded by the large and diverse Hispanic and Latino community. Fernanda proudly identifies as a part of this community as a Latina, Hispanic, and Mexican American.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Cinco de mayo is celebrated in southern states in 🇲🇽 mexico known as the batalla de Puebla. It’s not really popular in the northern states of Mexico. In the United States is celebrated by the Mexican American community because it was adopted as the el día de la raza. And of course like any other holiday in the United States is another day to make money 💰 so a lot of Anglo’s and none Mexicans get in the mix.

It was hard to go "outside" of the bubble of our barrio. In the barrio you survived with your language, food, customs. However outside is a different world, one where you either adapt or you fall on your face. Difficult but possible to try to make something of yourself in the U.S. it is going to cost you a lot of hard work more so than your average peer. Some will make it, others will not but the "opportunities" are present. You have to go after them, they don't come looking for you.

Some day the organized mass chaos will make sense and then the only thing that can surprise you is when something strange does not happen. I would appreciate to hear your opinion on Joe Rogan's podcast interviews with Ed Calderon. I have made friends with several first and second generation americans from Mexico. Through the years they have been the most willing to stay in contact especially since the pandemic. I think we both want to avoid stereotypes and give each other a better understanding of our own country. It is difficult, but not impossible.

Me acuerdo cuando mis papas brought mi desde Mexico at 3 years old.

With this logic, if I took some online Spanish courses and learned how to speak Spanish, I would also be able to claim that I'm Latino which makes no sense.

Latino also refresh to the Latin culture of the Romans which they spread around during their colonization. Latino is not the same as Latin American. Latino/Latin it's only about languages and Latin American it's about where one comes from. It refers to a geographical location. That area of the Americas was called Latin America by the Latin European Colonizers, French, Portuguese and Spaniards, and the reason was because their languages derived from the Latin language. ( Romance languages). One more thing. It's about where the Hispanic label comes from. It comes from the Romans. They called that area which comprised of what is now Portugal and Spain then under their administration "Hispania", hence the name Hispanic or Hispano/a. Everything Latin be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin culture all comes from Italy, Roman Italy/Italia. Lastly Latino and Latin are the same words only that in the English language it's Latin but in Italian, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish it's Latino/Latina. People coming or originating from Latin America are Latin Americans. The can also say Mexican, Cuban etc, etc but Latino it's only when one wants to state his or her culture. Latino it's not a race, not s Blood, not a Skin color and it's an Ethnicity for Spanish speaking people as the US Census Bureau says about it's classification of people.

I remember going to visit my Aunt in a nursing home. I lived in a city that had always been at least 50% Hispanic. I was shocked to only see one Hispanic person in the entire place. I saw at least 100 people there but only one was Hispanic. I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for their family first values but that took my respect to a new level. Hopefully that value rubs off on the rest of us

As a 3rd gen American, a lot of us don't relate with 1st gen, so we call ourselves Chicanos, because we don't fit in with Anglo Americans either. But then Chicanos have embraced a sort of gang culture, living in barrios, listening to oldies, etc. Yet, many have educated ourselves, moved out of barrios, improved quality of life for their families. Even left Catholic traditions for a more theological understanding of their faith.

When she said Spanish is someone who comes from or has origins of or come from the country of Spain. I was about to argue, BUT YOU ALL SPEAK SPANISH!! Then I thought I about England. As an American, I speak English but I would feel some type of way if you called me English. I would argue that’s for the boys across the pond (England). I learned an important lesson here. I’m glad I’m taking a class at Portland State University that got me to watch this as to have an accurate source to cite on this topic
