In this talk, Estrella Serrato discusses her experiences as a first generation higher education student. Her talk explores the cultural exclusivity in the college setting and how she personally found her path and earned her place as a graduate. Her story is inspirational, providing a unique perspective on diversity and achievement in college today. Estrella Serrato is a Mexican-American, first-generation college graduate, and founder of Cafecito con Estrellita, a Latinx podcast that guides first-generation scholars through the path of education through research and with her own experiences.
She serves as a resource and reminder for her communities that they are not alone in their journeys as they continue to pave a path towards a bright future. I relate to her story so much. I got my associates last year from a local community college and now at a four year university. Working part time and university full time as well. So proud of you Estrella❤❤️!!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story! As a first-gen student there were multiple times where I felt alone and left out of the conversation. Your words provided a much needed comfort and gave strength to the power of resiliency. When we choose to stand up for ourselves, we are creating a space for ourselves at the table and widening the gap for future students of color.
🇲🇽 I’m navigating this right now and let me tell you it’s been the biggest challenge in my life. The day I walk that stage I just know I’m going to be crying like a baby
