What Barbie told me about my potential… as a woman | Shadé Zahrai | TEDxMonashUniversity

We’re told to lead, but not too hard. To do what men do, but not how men do it…” Inspired by the story of her ancestors who despite the threat of persecution stood up for gender equality, Shadé Zahrai demonstrates how deep-rooted beliefs about gender bias affect our perceptions and how we view our own potential. In this optimistic and empowering talk, Shadé shares how gender equality and synergy is not only good for women, it’s good for business. Through working together and recognising the role our mindset plays, we can create a world where we are all free to pursue our passions and to contribute equally with our talents. Shadé Zahrai is an author, consultant, former lawyer, trainer, accredited coach, speaker and Australian champion latin dancer. Shadé specialises in translating positive psychology and neuroscience research into simple, easy-to-apply strategies to enhance performance and wellbeing. She is passionate about empowering women and minorities to challenge unconscious bias, drive inclusion and advance equality in the workplace and our communities. Learn more at www.shadezahrai.com. Her mission is to help make the world a better place - One happy person at a time. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I really liked this video and the ideas she had to share. It's certainly not about bashing men like some of the other talks I’ve seen online. It’s about breaking down the unconscious bias that we ALL have, and valuing people for their authentic strengths, whatever they may be.

I like how Shadé uses Barbie as a point illustrator but claiming that Barbie wasn't good enough, could mean equally that she did not have the necessary skills to complete the task; that the only people able to complete the task happened to be boys because they did have the necessary skills. Not everyone in a software development company has the same skill sets and requires collaboration amongst different people regardless of their gender to complete a task. In fact, you'll find one programmer specialising in the game plot, another focusing on the graphics, yet another on the character movements and quality control The pay gap has all sorts of aspects associated with it, not least the fact that not all jobs are paid equally. The more dangerous, more physical, more potentially harmful or distasteful jobs have way more men performing those tasks than women and consequentially are paid more than the quiet, safe, comfortable jobs that women tend to be the majority work force. Of course, the time spent child rearing takes a huge chunk out of a woman's working life and thereby reduces her earning capacity and subsequentially retirement funds. Does she expect women to be paid more than men when women work less hours in a safer environment? Oh, there is one small technicality too, it's illegal to pay differently for the same work performed. I've listened to many of her talks that are for empowering people (not specifically women because the issues that she talks about are relevant to everyone). I have enjoyed the content and taken salient points to include in my day to day activities. Anyway, I'll continue taking notes from the video content

I really believe that things would improve if women helped each other to make it to the top instead of stepping on each other, and we need men to also ask for help when they need it too.

1:36 "At a time where no women in the planet could vote" - Please know that in South India Queens used to rule that time fighting British(Ex: Velu Nachiyar). Women were warriors too in Southern India. I am sure there were other women rulers too.

not all people wants to be leaders or need to be leaders scoping the situation according to one's lens only is not the good idea.....removing expectations is also not a good idea because it is a driving factor for motivation to do something nor denying the inherent scientific traits of genders....Tasks which each gender do better and more efficiently must be done by so....Yeah bias and expectations do exist and will exist... wings analogy kind of far fetched men and women are not that much similar they are somewhat different..... But yeah these talks are tempting and kind of thought provoking....for the sake of upbringing of a child it is necessary to be warm, emotional, nurturing there is a reason even if it is societal made for the nature of women and this is also true for men... double standards yep they exist and it is everywhere for both genders which gender have more its a major question and complaining about double standards doesn't worth it different things are judged by different standards

The reason men made more, (I think times are a changing), Is because men didn't raise babies and take time off as much. Now that men have equal rights, (time off to raise children) it's time to level the playing field.

I didn't like her approach because she said had their grandparents not escaped from that country she would have been a 2nd class citizen. Then what about that country women, she should be much happier to be there and fight for their rights and achieve.

oh please.. asking for help from boys doesn't mean anything bad. Boys also ask for help from girls but I never see men making speeches about male power and men should stand up for themselves.

What about the part at the end suggesting that men and women work together to achieve equality and to collaborate? Let’s not contribute to divisive ideologies and think more critically when listening to a talk.
