What are these markers made of? Arrtx 32 "Acrylic" dual brush marker review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The markers are really fun, but are they acrylic-based? Let's take a look!
Today I am reviewing the 36 set of Arrtx dual-tip acrylic markers sold on Amazon: amzn.to/3GC5pYd
*I received these as a gift.
I enjoyed using these markers for artwork on paper. At first, I used them to add details to mixed media paintings but I didn't find the coverage to be that good so I tried a painting with just the markers on white mixed media paper and it was awesome. They blended well and felt great to use. I could also reactivate and blend them with water, making me wonder if they were really acrylic. They seem like an opaque Tombow marker. Let's look at the pros and cons...
Pros:
*The come preactivated, no priming and pumping as with other acrylic pens
*Blendable and rewetable (pro for me!)
*Nice color variety
*Brush nib is juicy, flexible and responsive.
*The packaging is good storage
Cons:
*Not permanent /waterproof
*The brush nib would be damaged if used on rough surfaces like rocks
*Not fully opaque
*No pigment or lightfast info
*No open stock availability
Bottom line:
I reached out to the company with my findings that these were not waterproof and therefore not suitable for rock and ceramic painting and the nibs would be too fragile for use on rough surfaces. They said they will edit the description on Amazon. The ink in these markers reminds me of chalk ink or gouache. It didn't occur to me at first because typical chalk markers have hard scratchy nibs that are streaky but these markers are really smooth and fluid. If you are a chalk marker lover you will really like these as the ink can be wiped off non-porous surfaces with a wet cloth. As an acrylic paint pen, these are not great but as an art marker, they are wonderful. It's gouache in a pen! I also want to be clear, I don't know what binder is in these pens. There is no smell to them. I suppose it could have really diluted acrylic paint but I've never seen any acrylic product act like this. Still, I like them and will probably buy more when I run out.

I bought this same set of pens a while ago to use on a cup, but when swatching them and using them it really seemed like they were way more like gouache than acrylic. They even reactivate with water! For a while there wasnt any videos about these but thank you so much for confirming they are not acrylic paint.

Also for the cup I had to sand it down, do a couple layers of medium, then draw with the pens, then I did multiple coats of matte acrylic sealer spray over it, but i still dont trust it in a dishwasher and handwash only.

I'd be afraid to write guest's names on glasses or plastic cups because if they were to sweat from condensation, the paint could possibly smear and run down the sides and make a mess. Great review Lindsay, I've been debating about getting these.

Thanks so much for this video Lindsay! I feel like I always learn me things about products, or new ways to use them! For example, I would not have thought to mix them with other water based medium. You mentioned that painting rocks might fray the nibs- I have used these a bit on rocks that have been printed with clear gesso, and (depending on the rock of course), it fills in the porous surface, making these brush tips just glide and blend so much easier than the small plastic tips of other "acrylic" pens! I tried it on canvas paper, and was not impressed... Will have to try on mixed media later, now that I have seen your work and the beautiful things you can accomplish with these ... Thanks for the inspiration!

Great review. I was thinking that if they had initially advertised this product as 'gouache paint markers' they prob would have sold even more- since there really isn't any kind of gouache paint marker out there right now.. but I have to admit I hate when brands/sellers advertise a product incorrectly- I feel like it's the least the brand could do is become familiar with the product they are selling- like hiring an artist or sending the product out to some artists (before selling the product) to get real hands on info about the product: what it is, what it's good for..etc...This situation frustrates me to be honest. BUT I really enjoyed this review and I'm super glad you are gonna contact them with your experience with their product...Anyway thanks for sharing and muvh love ❤️

I have bought this same set about a year ago and until now, I have never realized that these "acrylic markers" have the water-solubility properties of gouache. And it's unfortunate since I bought these because they are marketed as acrylic markers and I'm a sucker for their waterproof capabilities. Oh welp, guess I should just buy Arrtx's 30/36 acrylic marker set :')

These are just wonderful markers. So are the “high adhesion” ones (usually called the pastel set but they dry waterproof and don’t reactivate at all and I’d say are safe on all types of surfaces ) and together they make great paintings. I really enjoy building up the color of the dual tipped ones. I really love the waterproof ones for layering certain colors so I don’t contaminate the next color pen(like yellow over black making a bumble bee for example) and it’s a dream. Making things easier is always better. I really want to add the 10mm nib versions to my artillery :-)

I didn’t know I was supposed to squeeze them out into the flat pans asap. 😳

  • @FranNyan

Try keeping the tubes in a freezer bag. They shouldn't dry out that swiftly unless there's some sort of gap in the seal, so having them sealed in a bag should help keep that all in. I've had tubes that have sat around for years untouched that are perfectly soft (if a bit separated), so you definitely aren't meant to instantly decant them into pans once you open the tube.

I never pour my tubes into pans, some are really difficult to rewet. Check your tubes to make sure the threads are clean and the lids are fully twisted down(straight). Like the other commenter, I've had some of my watercolor tubes for years...over 10, and they haven't dried out. Also, I agree that keeping them in a ziploc bag might help them from drying out even more🙂.

If your watercolors dried in the tube, you can always cut the tube open and pop the dried watercolor paint into a palette. I had a problem tube that dried up too. The dried paint still worked well after I cut it out of it’s tube. The portable painter is a great travel palette, one of Lindsay’s favorites I believe. She reviewed the Jerry Q Art Travel Pocket Palette too, though she used it for gouache, but it should work just as well with w/c. I love the Mijello brand watercolor palettes. But there really are a ton of cute options online.

Hi Lindsay! Thanks for doing this review… I bought this set from Amazon 2 or 3 months ago after seeing another KZreadr talk about them. I played with them just a little bit when they first arrived but I quickly found out they weren’t acrylic markers so I set them aside and had not experimented with them to see the benefits they do have for other purposes so Thank You for that information. My box says they Fine Tip is 1.9 MM and the Brush Tip is 3.2 MM. The other thing I wanted to mention is that in the hard to read silver foiling writing on the color swatch sheet is says, “WATER-BASED INK”. I also love the box they came in and am storing them in it instead of transferring them to my Snap-N-Stor stackable containers I have most of my markers in. Have a great day! 🙂

Thank you, Lindsay! These look like a lot of fun to play with. I'm so glad you straightened out how they work, I appreciate that. Their description is very confusing because they say it's water-resistant and then waterproof and permanent when dry. Your video shows neither is really true. "[It's Water-Resistant When Dry]- The highly pigmented paint is high covering, water-resistant, and abrasion proof allowing application to almost any surface. Our Permanent Acrylic Paint Pens are waterproof paint pens,it’s permanent when dry." Their video actually shows them running something under water to show it's waterproof, very misleading. I think anyone painting shoes will be in for a not so pleasant surprise when they go to wash them. I want to buy them, but I'm hesitant because of the confusing way in which they market them.

I wish I had seen this before I bought this set. I bought 2 different Arrtx acrylic marker sets. The other one is pretty much waterproof, there's a couple of colours that do reactivate a little bit, but I just did a bunch of tests on different surfaces, and these ones just keep reactivating completely. I even tried them both on plastic, the other ones were permanent, but these ones just completely reactivated and I was able to wipe it off completely. I'm so disappointed, and I'm very annoyed because I had used these on a couple of paintings, and now I'm worried about them coming off. I bought these specifically to use on my acrylic painting projects to add details and lineart. I found out that these aren't waterproof when I had used the black on a painting and had to go back to fix something, and suddenly there was black smudges because the paint reactivated the marker.

I saw recorded demos from NAMTA of the prototypes a couple months ago. I'm not sold. They are pricy too. Becca hillburn just posted a review I'm going to watch it tonight. I'd see what she has to say before buying. I trust her opinions.

The “bottom line” in your description is really useful. I remember when I watched an acrylic KZreadr he was always warning about the loss of adhesion if you mix in too much water. He used canvas. When I asked Steve Mitchell he replied, not a risk with wc paper. Interesting, thanks Lindsay

Thank you for this review and all of your reviews! There are SO many options out there and we need someone who can buy everything and test it out and give us an honest and fair assessment so we don't waste more money than we already do! LOL Actually, I have a question that doesn't relate to markers, but to colored pencils. I should have asked on a colored pencils video, but I watched that yesterday. Maybe you can help though? Can you recommend some reliable options for pencil extenders? I went on Amazon and the 3 that I looked at had horrible reviews! 😳😳 Colored pencils aren't cheap, even though I couldn't afford to get the best set, I bought at the mid end of my budget but don't want to have any waste if I can help it. Going to the top of my budget, I'd be getting the same basic quality just maybe a few more pencils. They're actually pretty good pencils so far for beginners low end, cheaps.. They blend really well, no breakage so far, sharpen nicely and have good pigmentation (I didn't do a fancy test - they just color well and layer). I got the Artisto 72 ct after reading good reviews on Amazon. Probably TMI just to ask about pencil extenders, but I kinda feel like I know you after all your videos! LOL 😊 Thank you, Angela

The black barrel pens aren’t available any more boo… I wanted them because they were like gouache in a pen. Now what they show on Amazon have white a barrel and I don’t think are double ended so don’t know if they will dissolve in water. Just thought you might want to know.
