What are the tubes on the turrets of Main Battle Tanks used for? | TANK PYROTECHNICS 💥💨
Ғылым және технология
Ever wondered what the extra 'smoke dischargers' are used for that look like a pack of tubes or launchers on top of main battle tanks like Leopard 2 MBT and M1 Abrams? They are not what you think if you have never seen them before. They serve a very important training purpose for crews who are working to learn and improve their tank fighting skills! Let's review and discuss this option that can be added to main battle tanks in training scenarios for simulation and firing practice on peer to peer engagements and realistic battlefield effects.
Hope you enjoy!!

True story from the late 80's. I was in an Armored Cavalry unit doing force on force training. We were between training blocks doing a maintenance day still in BFE. I was sitting on my M88 doing paperwork for the troop and glanced up. Our fourth platoon leader was walking by with the real Chester Cat grin and something hanging from his hand. It took a second to see it was a bunch of Tank MILES simulators along with a "Master Blaster" manual firing unit. He gave me a quick look and said "Nuclear simulation" and headed off into the woods. Needless to say if you are the Cav you are not right in the head :).

Indeed. But CAV isn't a unit in the Army...its a state of mind! "If You Ain't CAV!"
I worked in the oilfield in Medicine Hat for the better part of 20 years, and have done quite a bit of time bouncing down pipelines on the range at CFB Suffield. Only place I ever worked where there's wellheads and complete in-line facilities located underground to protect from "stray" live rounds. Always cool to hear stories from veterans who have trained there. Your statement on the problems of grass fires is quite understated though. Push too hard on a fart out there and you better pray there's a fire extinguisher within reach
The tank firing at 10:19 was hit while shooting. you can see that because his modules are producing a flashlight its the AGDUS system he got hit by a lasershot of an enemy tank. depending on what dmg the computer tells you you have to shut down the the "destroyed" systems or you get killed if you dont do it in time. Greetings from a german tanmk platoon comander ;)
Imagine this: your somewhere in Germany in the pitch black of night, moving from your staging area to your defensive positions because you know opfor is coming in the morning. The whole company is in postion waiting for the first light to annihilate the enemy. Then the strobes on our MCTC (miles) start flashing because of a malfunction… I’m sure opfor loved the “we are here” lights when they bombarded our position with arty in the morning…
My first time at CF Suffield was during RV’92( 🇨🇦) they had bothe Challengers and Chieftains…greatest day of my life. 🇨🇦 Veteran They still had 3 REAL trees at that time.
Damn those Leopards move!!!!!!!!! beautiful footage boys lookin good
We used miles when I was in 86-89. I'm not sure when it was first used. We used it on our AH-1F Cobras.
one of our fellas used to carry a big Spanner when we would go Armoured Vehicle hunting, and we were classified as light infantry! 🙂
Captain here. It's pronounced: Kanonenabschussdarstellungsgerät. *flies away*
I had made poor man's dismounted training devices for my own troops to simulate TOW or AT fire against my tanks. Using my own $, I would put large amount of flour in a paper bag with a large firecracker, maybe a cherry bomb or such. When lit, it would create a very large bang in a paper bag and a equally large amount of blown flour mincing the back blast of an enemy AT fire along treeline or such; that was how I use to train enemy fire reaction for my tanks; pryos or other training aids might not be easily available at times.
This Leopard 2 tank is the most menacing looking tank, along with the British Chalenger. Such a presence on the battle field.

Does it make a sound? It's probably different for armoured vehicles and I don't know if it's taught now but my grandad (second world war light infantry officer) said the way he worked out where the enemy was after some time spent on the range you got to know how far someone shooting was away when the bullet went past you by the difference in time between the sound of the bullet passing and the report from the rifle firing it - you then had a direction and range and could shoot back in that general direction even if you couldn't actually see them. He had lots of little tips and tricks that I heard growing up but didn't appreciate how valuable they were.
For a bit more detail look at "Tactical Engagement Simulation" (TES) or Combat Vehicle Tactical Engagement System (CV TES).
Much better than the "Subcaliber simulators" that were used in earlier years where a pistol round was used.
My favorite force on force training was in Korea's twin bridges training center. As an Air Assault unit we were mainly Op4. 4/7 cav would bring out everything even the Kiowa scout Helicopters out. It was so much fun. They one time set a whole hillside on fire with sim flairs...
"Let the civilians mount the pyrotechnics because you cannot trust the soldiers with explosives." is my takeaway from this. 😅
Nothing like "appropriating" a few Hoffman Device Tank Fire simulation charges to blow up shit in the field until you get yelled at. I earned that distinction when I was a loader. I miss the Miles equipment days in the field. Good times. Yeee Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Before I was deployed to Afghanistan, we did ALOT of CQB and urban warfighting training . We did it with FX ammunition, way more realistic, and you get a whole new respect and not F**ing around and just do thing prober. Getting hit by FX ammo hurts like a mofo. Before that we used laser training gear, and no one really took it that super serious.

Woah, I really like the upgraded Darlek shown at 10:01. Exterminate! :D
Would this system still be conducive to good training for manual loaders? The whole point is to not use a blank, and if you did you'd just probably mess up the laser system in some way, but how are loaders getting training manipulating their shells?
"It's really good fun" ? It's a lot more fun than the real thing.

do you have to load dumby rounds in tanks for the laser system? I feel like an important part is loading the right rounds under stress.
Is the us army still talking about replacing this kind of thing w/ HUDs or did that go out w/ the FCS?
hey when they do these sim engagements, does the loader load anything into the cannon? like a bunch of dummy shells that don't fire but still simulate the role or something?
So in these exercises does using the tank's smoke make it invulnerable (ie does it block all the lasers)?
@11:37 What's that tracked vehicle? I can't recall having ever seen it and 'Google' isn't being friendly
Are there blank rounds that can be used in the main gun for tanks? Or would it cause too much wear on the barrel to be economically viable
Do these lasers simulate ammunition drop and lead? How does ATGMS work with this system? Do lasers know if tank has been hit in the side or front?
The small tubes are Grenade launchers.

Maybe ask the german Bundeswehr Press and Contact Center of the Heer (Landforces) if you can make a visit to the GÜZ (Gefechts Übungs Zentrum - Combat Training Center) of the Bundeswehr on the Altmark Training Range. Its the most modern and advanced combat training and simulation center in the european NATO. And they are currently upgrading their AGDUS System (Ausbildungsgerät Duellsimulator - trainingsystem duelsimulator) to an even more advanced version.
Leopard's do look good don't they :-).
Will those systems record a near miss (like a soldier worn one)?
Nowadays they might want to add a small civilian drone roaming around the field trying to drop an egg onto any tank. 😅
Loaderman just watching the rest of crewmember sweating.
I think you have a awsome German accent 👍😁
Armored vehicles practising with blanks on small arms caliber..... Use live rounds on them instead. Make use of the battle testing of the added items to them, shit, the crews are protected after all....

or not. currently the UK has neither quality nor quantity to make up for the lack of quality. The modernisationprogrammes to bring the UK army to the technical standart of NATO partners of 2010-2015 are still not properly in progress and will take longer than 2030 to come into effect.

Procurement of Ajax as replacement for CVRT and Warrior: 140 hulls produced, introduction into service not in the forseeable future, as the major problems with the platform continue. The UK Army is neither big, nor in any form capable of facing a peer opponent. Thats why the USA downgraded the UK army rating from Tier 1 (capable of immediate deployment of at least a full combat brigade to a theater of conflict) down to low Tier 2-Tier 3 (capable of deploying a combat brigade to a theater of conflict withing 3-6 months, combat capability is time limited (due to lack of spareparts, ammunition etc the combat capability attritions within 5-7 days to not combat effective - meaning basicly defeated due to lack of ammunition and spareparts))
It's to simulate the main gun firing when they shoot the Lazer
Could a crew commander acknowledged his vehicle is killed by personally deploying a black smoke pyrotechnic on top of the vehicle. Safely of course.
I also remembered during FTXs, aside from the God Guns, empires would drive by and pop purple smoke grenades around my tracks and other positions, announcing that we just got hit by precision arty strikes, then designating casualties for follow up rescue procedures- very depressing to be the recipients of such but necessary trainings.

Hey Matsimus. What's your opinion on Excalibur rounds vs BONUS rounds? Both are in use in Ukraine but I haven't heard that much about BONUS? Is it less effective? Somehow it feels like it's cheaper than an Excalibur round?
@petergerdes1094
Жыл бұрын
I dunno if it's cheaper but it certainly has different capabilities. I'm guessing here so I'd also love matimus a video but believe BONUS rounds only work against vehicles recognized by the bomblets LIDAR which might be great against distant tanks but won't land a shell in a trench or bunker or on a bridge. Conversely, Excalibur presumably won't be as useful against moving tanks or ones w/o a precisce position. I'd also guess different danger close distances.
@Apeshaft

@@petergerdes1094 Each shell seems to contain two sub munitions that start to scan the ground below for a target. So you really do get a Bonus round. I would have liked to be a fly on the wall in the meeting where they decided on the name "Bonus". A Bonus round will not give you an extra life, even though you air burst will activate multi ball mode of sorts.
@zhufortheimpaler4041
Жыл бұрын
they are both ammunition for different tasks and ranges. BONUS and SmART155 only have a range of around 30km but are designed to engage enemy vehicles in the open. These are going to be used to engage enemy MBT´s, IFV´s etc in a "medium range" distance, especcially if its multiple targets. A PzH2000 Battery of 6 Vehicles can dump 30 rounds into a target zone within 30kilometers in 30 seconds and be on the move again, those 30 rounds "multiply" to 60 warheads. Thats a hostile tank Bataillon in its staging area gone within a 30 seconds window. Excalibur (similarly to Krasnopol from the sovjet union) is a terminal phase guided precision ammunition wich is used to precisely engage single targets within 45-60km radius from the gun. These are used to engage enemy strongpoints, command posts, ammo and fuel dumps, single vehicles etc.
