What are the tubes on the turrets of Main Battle Tanks used for? | TANK PYROTECHNICS 💥💨

Ғылым және технология

Ever wondered what the extra 'smoke dischargers' are used for that look like a pack of tubes or launchers on top of main battle tanks like Leopard 2 MBT and M1 Abrams? They are not what you think if you have never seen them before. They serve a very important training purpose for crews who are working to learn and improve their tank fighting skills! Let's review and discuss this option that can be added to main battle tanks in training scenarios for simulation and firing practice on peer to peer engagements and realistic battlefield effects.
Hope you enjoy!!

True story from the late 80's. I was in an Armored Cavalry unit doing force on force training. We were between training blocks doing a maintenance day still in BFE. I was sitting on my M88 doing paperwork for the troop and glanced up. Our fourth platoon leader was walking by with the real Chester Cat grin and something hanging from his hand. It took a second to see it was a bunch of Tank MILES simulators along with a "Master Blaster" manual firing unit. He gave me a quick look and said "Nuclear simulation" and headed off into the woods. Needless to say if you are the Cav you are not right in the head :).

I worked in the oilfield in Medicine Hat for the better part of 20 years, and have done quite a bit of time bouncing down pipelines on the range at CFB Suffield. Only place I ever worked where there's wellheads and complete in-line facilities located underground to protect from "stray" live rounds. Always cool to hear stories from veterans who have trained there. Your statement on the problems of grass fires is quite understated though. Push too hard on a fart out there and you better pray there's a fire extinguisher within reach

The tank firing at 10:19 was hit while shooting. you can see that because his modules are producing a flashlight its the AGDUS system he got hit by a lasershot of an enemy tank. depending on what dmg the computer tells you you have to shut down the the "destroyed" systems or you get killed if you dont do it in time. Greetings from a german tanmk platoon comander ;)

The whole company is in postion waiting for the first light to annihilate the enemy. Then the strobes on our MCTC (miles) start flashing because of a malfunction… I’m sure opfor loved the “we are here” lights when they bombarded our position with arty in the morning…

I had made poor man's dismounted training devices for my own troops to simulate TOW or AT fire against my tanks. Using my own $, I would put large amount of flour in a paper bag with a large firecracker, maybe a cherry bomb or such. When lit, it would create a very large bang in a paper bag and a equally large amount of blown flour mincing the back blast of an enemy AT fire along treeline or such; that was how I use to train enemy fire reaction for my tanks; pryos or other training aids might not be easily available at times.

Does it make a sound? It's probably different for armoured vehicles and I don't know if it's taught now but my grandad (second world war light infantry officer) said the way he worked out where the enemy was after some time spent on the range you got to know how far someone shooting was away when the bullet went past you by the difference in time between the sound of the bullet passing and the report from the rifle firing it - you then had a direction and range and could shoot back in that general direction even if you couldn't actually see them. He had lots of little tips and tricks that I heard growing up but didn't appreciate how valuable they were.

@@tomhenry897 we use those too, along with rounds for our main gun Hoffman devices, but such were never enough to parcel out to the different troops in the squadron so I improvised when possible.

Are smoke screens really used any more? I have never seen it used, and it seems obsolete in today's technology.

Hey Matsimus. What's your opinion on Excalibur rounds vs BONUS rounds? Both are in use in Ukraine but I haven't heard that much about BONUS? Is it less effective? Somehow it feels like it's cheaper than an Excalibur round?

I dunno if it's cheaper but it certainly has different capabilities. I'm guessing here so I'd also love matimus a video but believe BONUS rounds only work against vehicles recognized by the bomblets LIDAR which might be great against distant tanks but won't land a shell in a trench or bunker or on a bridge. Conversely, Excalibur presumably won't be as useful against moving tanks or ones w/o a precisce position. I'd also guess different danger close distances.

@@petergerdes1094 Each shell seems to contain two sub munitions that start to scan the ground below for a target. So you really do get a Bonus round. I would have liked to be a fly on the wall in the meeting where they decided on the name "Bonus". A Bonus round will not give you an extra life, even though you air burst will activate multi ball mode of sorts.

they are both ammunition for different tasks and ranges. BONUS and SmART155 only have a range of around 30km but are designed to engage enemy vehicles in the open. These are going to be used to engage enemy MBT´s, IFV´s etc in a "medium range" distance, especcially if its multiple targets. A PzH2000 Battery of 6 Vehicles can dump 30 rounds into a target zone within 30kilometers in 30 seconds and be on the move again, those 30 rounds "multiply" to 60 warheads. Thats a hostile tank Bataillon in its staging area gone within a 30 seconds window. Excalibur (similarly to Krasnopol from the sovjet union) is a terminal phase guided precision ammunition wich is used to precisely engage single targets within 45-60km radius from the gun. These are used to engage enemy strongpoints, command posts, ammo and fuel dumps, single vehicles etc.

thats an M113A2 DK IFV if i am not mistaken. M113A2 with a 25mm Autocannon Turret, used by the danish armed forces. or it is a M113A1 MRV of Australia with the turret of a Scorpion CVRT

@@zhufortheimpaler4041 Trust me, its not a M113A2 DK IFV.. I have crawled aroudn inseid them. It was a horrible attempt to make an IFV on the cheap. If I recall it was a mix of italian turrent, swiss gun and some spanish/french fire control systems. Safe to say, it never really worked. By the looks of it, its used by US National gard, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. I'm just kinda chocked that the US would use something like that. THey have made something like 8000 bradleys. one would think they had enough to go around,
