I came from Canada do compete in a wrestling tournament. We had never even heard of folk style. Our coach protested the tournament because we were not aware of the rules. The convener said we had to wrestle folk style and we got crushed. In day 2 the appeal came out in our favour and all day 1 results were thrown out and we had to wrestle freestyle. I remember our first wrestler giving a 5 point suplex to an American wrestler and he screamed when he went over. Found out they didn’t like being thrown and we won 10 of 12 matches. I liked the idea of ground wrestling but still like to throw guys and at 6’6” that’s a long way down.

I see your hater is still subscribed. On another note, Trent needs to watch out. Alex is getting big. Good job on the video, guys.

Coach, great job! I hope you cover the crackdown too; just like the whizzer position for head inside singles, the crackdown for the high crotch / head outside single is another position that probably needs an explicit explanation on when control is established. Also the stalling rules on the back bodylock (ie, top guy needs to mat return in 5 seconds, cut the guy loose, or get hit with stalling). Folksyle mat work is awesome, and it translates well to MMA and BJJ. Hand fighting, escapes, reversals, mat returns, back bodylocks from standing, emphasis on control, etc. All around it's the most practical mat work of all wrestling styles. That being said, one of the things that I like about freestyle and Greco Roman mat work is that it forces you (when you are on bottom) to defend with nothing but your hips. As the defender you're not allowed to hand fight to block the top guy's offense, so you end up defending mostly with your relative hip positioning (especially in Greco), and that hard-to-teach intuition can help a lot when defending your base in other sports. Folkstyle as a whole is also (in my opinion) safer than freestyle and judo, and WAY safer than Greco Roman, so it's good for kids and casual adults.

Always interested how they score points bcs, all i see is two sports teens locked on....... to breakaway to score one point.... wow.... that... is.... hard...... cos most of the sample i saw its impossible to break free. Thanks to user MIdwest Wrestler not only i learn more how this sport is played out but also damn, finally i know the name of the sport hahahaha. Not just wrestling but folkstyle wrestling. This sport seriously damn tough. Very very physical and scale 1 to 10.... this is a 10 .... super hard sport. Thanks again for the great break down.

Thank you for the content Coach! If possible I would love to hear your take on setting up takedowns in MMA when fighting opponent with opposite stance eg Southpaw vs Orthodox. I know the single is always there in that case but how about setting up doubles against opposite stance or any other takedowns/entries you recommend? Thank you 🙏

Hey Brian, I just noticed something new over at the Tristar Gym channel. A subscriber can now "join" the Tristar Gym as well as being a subscriber. $5 a month to "join". You might want to check that out. I haven't seen this before. I will definitely join if you go this route just to let you know🙂.

How many remember when the start lines were moved to where they are now instead of the back foot on the outside of inner circle? Can you go into details about potentially dangerous since I know that has changed a lot since I wrestled in the 80's

I would have been a way better wrestler if I understood the rules. I had a small stint in middle school and freshman year high school where I was a a pretty decent freshman JV wrestler. If I understood the rules more I probably could have dominated more.

They are brothers, but they don't like each other very much. Right? And the first lesson in folk wrestling is... Make sure you don't like your opponent. That's why I am so bad at bjj. I like all my opponents and spend half the match complimenting them on how good their choke is.
