What Are the Lessons From History For the Ukraine Crisis?

As the crisis over Ukraine continues to preoccupy the United States, Russia and Europe, it is increasingly urgent to consider the lessons from history from earlier international crises, particularly those that were successfully and peacefully resolved. The Cuban missile crisis offers one such example. Despite enormous tensions between Washington and Moscow, the two sides reached a diplomatic accommodation that averted a nuclear catastrophe. Can Washington and Moscow arrive at a similar outcome today?

Would rather see Americans defend the “territorial integrity” of our own borders before risking a War with Russia over Ukraine. Let the European NATO countries handle this problem in Europe. What good are Allies that can’t even take care of business in their own neighborhood? They had no problem attacking or fighting in places like Libya & Afghanistan.

It's a lie, Putin used it as an excuse to start a war to stay in power and boost his ratings by making people to rally behind the flag. All Putin wants is to stay in power, the rest is propaganda and hollow rhetoric.

46:07 A great power judged by by what metrics? By how fast your military can be routed and obliterated by a country one-tenth your size? Or judged by the number of troops, and the amount of equipment you can loose and get obliterated by the enemy within the shortest period of time possible? Or by how many of your soldiers can surrender as soon as they reach the battlefield? Or by the number of heinous atrocities and war crimes they commit against the civilian population? Or is it judging by how many washing machines and freezers your army can pillage and plunder within a month of you failed invasion? Can we get an answer from Graham Allison?

LOL at those two "experts" thinking we're about to collapse, and China and Russia are on the march. Unless he meant their being on the march off a steep precipice right into the abyss of the same old things they had all seen - or, perhaps, brought upon themselves - in the 20th century. 34:29

Comparing this crisis is like trying to compare grapefruits and hammers. Most of the assertions here are at base false. If Putin decided to put defensive missile systems in Cuba and Venezuela I doubt anyone would even bat an eye. But honestly constraining the fate of 45 million people to the whims of a fairly ruthless dictator because you think they shouldn't have a say in their own future is not just heartless. It's a huge strategic mistake. Let's just never mind the fact that statistically 48 women will die today because of domestic violence laws in Russia.. or the widespread assassination and corruption. If we just allow any country to deny the rights of any other country on its border to deny its right to exist, what does that mean for Taiwan, the Baltic states.. Korea? This is not about a tit for tat. Putin is not so ignorant that he believes NATO poses a military threat to Russia. Hes not answering idiot. He is the defacto emperor of Russia he wants nothing less than full control of all neighboring states, and handing him Ukraine (against the wishes of its own people) will not pacify him. This is not the Cuban missile crisis. This is Germanys push to broaden its sphere of influence in the late 1930s. We could step back and allow Putin to have his way. Peace in our time, I suppose right..

Tomislav Cirkovic; First of all you need to read a bit of history. Poland was under USSR dominance from 1945-1990. During that time most of USSR leaders were Ukrainians and Georgian. Second more important Poland attacked USSR 1921/1922. And third, maybe the most important, Poland is not coming to defend Ukraine - It is there to take Galicia.
