One reason that they are not independent is because they have a very small population of less than 50,000. Sure, some countries, even in Europe (such as Liechtenstein), have smaller populations, but I'm sure that is a factor.

The faroese parliament was against declaring independence in 1946. The lagtingsformand did so on his own without any legal foundation. Combined with a majority against him in local parliament and number of invalid votes outnumbering the difference between yes and no sides, the danish government correctly decided not to accept the declaration. Next time I am sure the support for independence will be much greater. They are effectively ready for all practical purposes.

Thank you for the video. A small correction: You can not take the FIFA or UEFA to account for what is a country. When "England" plays a match against "Germany" in an international football game then it is the team of the FA against the team of the DFB. The FIFA and UEFA just list accepted football associations that is why "non-countries" like the Faroe Islands but also England, Wales, Scottland, Nothern Ireland, Gibraltar, .... are independend in FIFA even though they are not otherwise. Hint: You could find your own football association and could bribe the FIFA to be accepted. Then you could particpate with your friends in the qualifiers to the World Cup. ;)

All of Denmark's Atlantic territories are are outside the EU, leading to interesting quirks regarding EU citizenships and EU laws and rights within the Danish Kingdom. All citizens of the Danish Kingdom are Danish citizens, but not all Danish citizens are EU citizens and not all of Denmark is in Schengen or subject to the free market rules. Interestingly enough this is actually not unusual, most EU nations still holding old colonies actually treat them as separate from the mainland like this and except them from EU membership. France is the most notable odd one out as it believes most of its old colonies are a part of France proper. Generally if you are trying to travel to any EU nation's holdings outside mainland Europe you should be really careful to examine whether there are special rules in place, more often than not there is and unless you are a citizen of the specific EU nation in question you probably need to jump through additional hoops to go to such places.

@NATIK001 I understand that when an (ex) colony is in Africa or the Pacific, they won’t be part of EU/Schengen. But the Faroe Islands are well within the European borders. I was asking because we’re planning a trip to Europe and can only stay in Schengen 90 days out of 180. So when we’re in Scotland (sitting out our 90 days before we can re-enter Schengen), can we pop over to the Faroes? Also considering you can only enter Schengen twice in a one year period… Looks like we can :-)

Not as independent as Australia. Denmark is the sovereign state and can, if they wish to, take full control of the Faroe Islands again. This is because the Danish constitution only allows a unitary state to exists. The way Denmark got around this constitutional hurdle with the Faroe Islands and Greenland is that they have “delegated competencies” to the respective governments. In other words, it’s not different from the Danish government, but only allowed to be different by the grace of the Danish government. The Faroese parliament makes all local laws, except for immigration laws, defense, currency, law enforcement and courts. However, Faroese/Danish law enforcement and courts follow Faroese laws locally when it comes to punishments of local crimes, but any court appeals have to be moved to Danish courts in Denmark, usually with judges and lawyers with Faroese expertise, since they too have to sentence after Faroese laws, even though the case is run in Denmark.

Ouch, seeing that the USA has a higher GDP/capita then a place like Denmark is scary since the poverty n unemployment rates in the USA r so damn high n yet the massive wealth of its 1% still make the country as a whole seem like it can compete with European nations that have a much higher standard of living. P.S. I’m not from the USA or Europe so no bias here, just a mild surprise to add to the mountain of depressing thoughts about the world. Like while typing this comment I notice 2 globe icons show up in my iPhone word suggestions when I wrote “world” but 1 was centered on the Americas n the other on Europe n Africa but not Asia n when I came to edit my comment to add this fact I wrote “globe” n suddenly got the 3rd option of an Asia centered globe. But still no Pacific Ocean centered one but I guess a blue sphere wouldn’t get the point across 😹. But all this has me wondering if my phone was paying attention to the places I was typing about when it decided to suggest only western globe emojis when I wrote “world” or if apple is just western centric by design cuz if it was based on my location I imagine I wouldn’t have had options n just gotten the one emoji with my continent. I’m still half asleep so hopefully I have not bored u with my morning thoughts :P

Faroe island status as a "country" is not much different from Scotland and Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom.

Indeed, they have a devolved parliament but the Danish Kingdom is a unitary state and they are a part of the Kingdom together with Denmark and Greenland, the primary parliament and the center of power is in Denmark, but Greenland and the Faroe Isles have been handed certain areas they can control without interference. The UK is also a unitary state with a primary parliament and 3 devolved parliaments under it. The specifics of what each devolved parliament gets to decide and don't get to decide vary case by case, but broadly speaking they are all under similar arrangements where the central government (Westminster and Folketinget respectively) are always in total control on paper, but agreements have been made to hand out certain powers to local assemblies. And just like in the UK the central power has no devolved parliament, there is no Danish only parliament or an English only parliament. Though in the Danish Folketing there is a gentleman's agreement that the representatives from the other members of the union do not vote on matters only pertaining to the Danish mainland and its people, just like the Danes abide to not interfere in the other direction.

As a Faroese person, I say absolutely not. Denmark allows the Faroe Islands to do whatever they want, most of the time, while the same can’t be said for Scottish territories, like Shetland. On top of that, Scotland is subservient to the English government as well. All natural resources found in the Faroe Islands belong to the Faroese people, also unlike Shetland. Besides, Denmark is in a much better position economically, if the Faroese economy once again crashes and burns like it did in the early 1990’s. The UK’s economy is mediocre (per capita) at best, and the government runs consistent budget deficits.

It only looks horrible because it's done outside in the water. Reality is that it is not any worse than what goes on inside a slaughterhouse and it has nothing on the cruelty involved in factory farming. If you honestly believe the Faroese hunt is so horrific you should go vegetarian or vegan, because all meat products involve bloody slaughter, and just like in slaughterhouses the Faroese use techniques designed to kill quickly and with the least amount of suffering, but killing is killing and slaughtering always involve lots of blood, we are just used to it being hidden inside slaughterhouses and not to see it out in the open like that.

Wow English language and linguistics just hit a new low. You guys are definetly inable to translate and pronounce names from other languages, even other germanic ones! smh "Færøyene" as the islands are named, means "sheep islands". Fær, får and so on means sheep. Øy, øe, oe means island. The english has somehow got the idea to call it "faroe islands" (so sheep islands islands..?). "Faeroys" would be more accurate.

they are one of the last places that massacre dolphins en masse in the name of 'tradition'. Its utterly barbaric and 100% unnecessary. If you met someone from the Faroes, ask them why the massacre dolphins rather than being civilised.

They also kill about 700 whales a year. The Faroese defend their practice in various ways, some of which involves pointing out the math and the species they hunt, which, they say, does not further endanger the species’ existence. But the fact remains that they are violating a worldwide moratorium on whaling, and it is controversial enough to have possibly earned a mention in this video.
