What are the Catecholamines? | Dopamine, Norepinephrine, Epinephrine | Physiology and Main Functions

The 3 catecholamines are Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Epinephrine.
The process for synthesizing catecholamines is:
Digest a protein source containing phenylalanine (an essential amino acid)
Phenylalanine ➡️ Tyrosine (a nonessential amino acid)
Tyrosine ➡️ L DOPA (aka levodopa)
Levodopa ➡️ Dopamine
Dopamine ➡️ Norepinephrine
Norepinephrine ➡️ Epinephrine
What does Dopamine do?
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain
Dopamine is involved in reward/ motivation pathways as well as the motor control pathways.
Dopamine is known for it’s role in Parkinson’s disease.
When dopamine producing neurons in the substantial migration die off Parkinson’s disease can result in slowness, rigidity, tremors, and decreased motor control.
Parkinson’s Disease is treated with Levadopa which should make sense since we talked about how it is the precursor to dopamine.
What do epinephrine and norepinephrine do?
Increase blood pressure
Increase muscle contractions via increased calcium release
Increase energy availability
Increase testosterone, growth hormone, IGF-1
Increase vasodilation
Where are the catecholamines synthesized?
The Adrenal Medulla

    If someone is deficient in both Eppinette, friend and norepinephrine, should they simply just support this pathway with vitamin C and sam E?

    Please answer me! I wonder about epinephrine vs female hormones . And if the testosterone produced from epinephrine,wich my girlfriend finds in the pill wellbutrin,also called ziban or else. Thanks

    dopamine is synthesized in the adrenal medulla...but released from the substantia nigra? How did dopamine get from the medulla cortex to the substantia nigra?

    is it just because I come from medical side that I think saying epi and norepi causes vasodilation is a bit misleading... it causes vasoconstriction in many organ/tissues, but it is true that if only talking about skeletal muscles that it does cause vasodilation especially in big muscles...

    Medical side ya coz in general epinephrine and norepinephrine can do both vasodilation and vasoconstriction depending on types of adrenergic receptors (alpha or beta adrenergic receptors) Norepinephrine more of vasoconstrictive effects Skeletal muscle shud have more beta2 adrenergic receptors where stimulation of epi or norepi will cause vasodilation in general
