What are Surface Imperfection Maps?

Clean surfaces are the cause of many renders looking fake. Since we couldn't find any good texture maps we created them: www.poliigon.com/textures/sur...

    I appreciate the realism But, that perfect, straight line, brand new look to the materials is what I like about graphics You want a balance between realism and brand new Sometimes you don't like it looking realistic, you just want it to look clean and hd

  • @KarimInordinate

    But why can't this just be baked into the different textures (roughness, diffuse, normal, etc). What is the purpose of an entirely seperate texture? Even here you use it as a roughness map. If you paint out areas you don't need, maybe you can justify it, but that's still part of the roughness output in the end. Don't get me wrong, distributing these separately is a great idea, just not a new one.

  • @wylie2835

    @wylie2835

    They interact dynamically with the lighting. If it were baked it would look the same no matter which angle you were looking at it and no matter how the lighting was set up around the object.

    its plugged into the roughness node. Light reflects differently off of different parts of the mesh depending on the white and black of the map. Similar to displacement maps. You can't bake that into diffused/albedo textures.

    This is just a collection of textures and texture maps, not a damn modeling software bro. You can't just add a texture and have your actual object change. Although, that would be cool, hint hint anybody who makes 3d modeling software.
