What are RetroAchievements?

Ойындар

Updates: DreamCast, PS2 and GameCube gained achievement support since this video's release!
More dedicated emulators have also brought RetroAchievements outside the constraints of RetroArch: These include GameCube with Dolphin, PSP with PPSSPP, PS2 with PCSX2 and Aethersx2, PS1 with DuckStation, DS with MelonDS, and GBA with PizzaBoy GBA.
Dolphin support only paves the way for Wii as well. More on that in the future!
I'll try to keep this up to date if any new standalones become available or if new major systems gain support. Also ignore the Twitch link at the end, I no longer stream for privacy reasons.
Finally, I've managed to make a video about something I've been super eager to talk about for the longest time. It almost feels like no one talks about this whenever they bring up retro gaming. Like sure, replaying old games is one of the most fun ways to relive childhood memories, but without incentive it's almost meaningless at times.
Opinions aside, it's something I've been meaning to make a video on for about a year now, so hopefully you guys take an interest too! I'm sure many of you probably already knew about it, but I also feel like not everyone really KNOWS about it, y'know?
Quick mistakes I noticed post-editing: I believe I called one of the sites Cheevo Tracker instead of Cheevo Hunter, and I mentioned info being on the bottom left then having it appear on the top left (that's cause there was a recent update that changed that and I just added in the footage last minute)
To make things even more fun, guess what my top 3 favorite games are based on the footage I used, and also count how many times I said the word "achievement" (plural counts too)
Anyway, hope you all enjoy and have a happy holiday!
Here's an extra gift for those who want to use the NSO styled bezels I made for RetroArch:

@@marcorc5167 Tomodachi wasn't particularly hard because there is not a lot of action, you have a lot of control in terms of what changes and how, although it took a bit of time, considering the amount of achievements the game ended up receiving. Between the programming and testing it must have taken me a good three weeks to a month.

I've use RA for a few months now after getting into emulation, and I'd say it's become my favourite achievement system. Leaderboards, subsets for the more popular games, achievements for hacks and homebrews, a strong community, and bonus points for getting extremely rare achievements. Since this video was made, RA support has been extended to DuckStation, PCSX2, and I think Dolphin has only just started support. Dreamcast is also supported in RetroArch using the Flycast core.

Saw your most recent video on the RA website front page, and I gotta say, great video, the newest video and this. I do love Retro Achievements a lot, gives me a new way to play past games, be it games I have played before in the past, or new ones to try, and I just really love the idea a lot, and I can not wait until PS2 gets RA, PS2 was my first console and have very fond memories of it And I do love Retro Arch in general as well, have everything in an all-in-one thing, is so helpful for me, not having to go different emulators and such, though I only do play on PC so yea

  • @usagishade

    @usagishade

That’s why I love FrontEnds that treat RetroArch as an extension and have achievements integrated. Makes everything more cohesive, especially now that PS2 achievements will definitely require standalone emulators, it’s good to have everything in one place

Very good video. Have shared it with many, really hits the nostalgic vibe that comes from engaging with the site well. Given the changes to how Hardcore Mode works now, and the new console releases, could even use an update video at some point :D tho I can understand that might be an ongoing issue given how things develop as they go. Thanks for this.

With how much they update the site, that would be a bit of an undertaking. I think once the site is updated to the point where it’s practically different from when this video was made, an up to date video covering the new improvements and a broad overlook wouldn’t hurt. RA has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone a bit when it comes to my security blanket type games and really clear out my backlog significantly. The achievement incentive gave me the extra push to finally play a game in my backlog I otherwise would have had an excuse to put off longer, or replay I game I've beaten once but probably would have never touched again. Glad that I found your video. Insane production value. Really REALLY great. I love it. What kind of software do you use? Where did you learn to structure your content, find the images and the right texts for the right moment? Do you have tipps for newcomers?

Well, I've done motion graphics for at least 10 years or so. My early teens were full of video editing for an old youtube channel I deleted ages ago so that's where a lot of my experience came from. I use Adobe After Effects for all of my videos and I create a good chunk of my assets in PhotoShop when I need something specific. I use Hexels to create sprite gifs and upscale them to an HD resolution with no artifacts. The fonts I use are just fonts I really like lol like the AppleKid font is from EarthBound to match the visuals, and my personal drop shadow font doesn't exist anywhere else, at least not in english text. In terms of tips I can give, honestly... I've never been good at teaching that sort of thing but all I can say is, never settle for less when editing. Keep working on the same few seconds even if it takes you hours, until you're satisfied with how it came out. I always go for 1080p 60fps compositions. A lot of the extra motion graphics I add are just to add depth to the footage so it's not stagnant or boring. So keeping things in motion or animated will always appear more interesting than staring at a still image for a long time. Whatever you find visually pleasing or portrays your personality really. Hope that helps a little. Overall, just have fun with it. If you notice mistakes you make, use that to improve for next time, never let it discourage you. If you ever feel like "Oh I could do this way better if I did it like this instead" then you're on the right track. Growth is the best part of doing something you enjoy for a long time :)

Before RA you would beat a game and be like okay I beat the game I’m done with it but with RA it gives you a reason to play all of your old games and that’s really cool

Currently been waiting for Retroid Pocket 2+ to do achievements on my fav retrogames after enjoying them on my 21" Trinitron a while now, but never even knew about the Active Presence or CheevoHunters-site! Anyway, the production value on your video is ASTOUNDING! What do you use for video editing and effects? Dearly wishing you'll get more subs over time man.

I use after effects for editing and photoshop for assets. BTW ME TOO I’ve been waiting for my RP2+ for achievement grinding and cause I prefer playing retro games on a handheld with an ideal form factor. I’ll most likely do a review of it too and test out harder to run games/consoles like GameCube, Wii and 3DS

You don’t even need to 100% them to enjoy RA tho, just like achievements for modern systems. I haven’t 100%’d a single game, but seeing my progress and occasionally attempting to get a harder one is still a lot of fun. Plus RA now tracks which games you’ve “beaten”, not 100%’d. So for example, on my profile it shows that I’ve beaten Pokemon Platinum, even if I haven’t 100%’d it. You’ll get a silver medal for beating the game traditionally, and a gold for 100%ing the achievements. So even without going the extra mile and 100%ing everything, you can still track all the games you’ve beaten and the achievements you’ve earned.
