The Aint Misbehavin stride was too good!!
I don't often get the opportunity to just listen to Jeremy play and watch, and I forget how much of a KILLER pianist he is.

Best and most inspiring explanation of these styles I've ever seen. I enjoyed this as much as watching a live show - the education part just came along for the ride. Thanks!

I'm a hardcore stride fan and I usually don't fancy improvisation because it can drag on, but when its done on par to melodies of fats waller it's a joy to listen to. You casually smashed that ain't misbehavin.

Thanks for the nice comment! I'm certainly no Fats Waller, but I'll take the compliment!
You told the stories with a lot of enthusiasm. Thanks! 😁

You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
The honky tonk piano sounded amazing. Distortion before the electric stuff. I’m a blues guitar player who is always looking to steal from honky tonk and boogie Woogie 😂
I don't play any instrument and wish I had been encouraged as a child to learn about music theory and practice an instrument. However, I enjoy listening to a variety music, mainly the heavy rock stuff but bands such as ELP and Keith Emerson's style have me captivated by his improvisational style. Now I have learned about Stride, Honky Tonk etc., from you Jeremy, I can now try to listen out for the subtle differences in music. A great explanatory video😀. Thanks from the UK.

The shared hands approach reminds me of the way chords are spread out in four part harmony similar to Bach chorales.

Definitely! You can think about soprano, alto, tenor, bass when learning the shared-hands voicings (although you don’t have to)
We need more creators like you on youtube ! Very informative and entertaining video 🙏👍
This is the best explanation! I had the thought that, if there had been no Prohibition and speakeasys the style of expanding by improv might not have come about! And without Jazz blacks and whites would not have broken down the walls of segregation as well as they did! You are a genius player! Wow.
Amazing lesson by a terrific pianist. Congratulations from Brazil!

Very Good Jeremy.. Thanks for explaining all this stuff. It is fascinating.
Thank you for the clear explanation! I didn't notice the slight difference and thought all of them are same things... LOL

Sure thing, Eydi!
Great video. Learned a lot. Admittedly, I have never liked listening to 'Shared Hand' style, as you term it. It is the one used by a lot of cocktaii lounge pianists. I dislike using just the center of the keyboard only. Sounds like the piano player is making up for having a weak left hand, unable to play more complex styles. It is rather boring.
@JeremySiskind

You're right that a "Shared hands" style brings the pianist towards the center of the piano, but they can always decorate between voicings in the upper and lower registers.

re: "...but they can always decorate between voicings in the upper and lower registers." You are right. They can, but the rarely do :) The other thing a lot of piano players do, is play loudly. My mother, a professional musician, always maintained, 'those who do play well, play loud'.
Very helpful. Do you think an intermediate player could learn maple leaf rag?
bravo

Hello , Jeremy, I have a question about the 8th in ragtimes, am I supposed to play 8th notes straight if they are written as straight or should I swing them?
