I was confused by the differences between Photoshop and Clip Studio’s masking tools. I didn’t understand why the black/white masking rule didn’t transfer over. Thanks for explaining it clearly and concisely.

This was very helpful! I am also trying to find a video specially on how to paint only inside of a masked layer so I don't have to erase when I go outside of lines. Like for example, if I want to color only part of a drawing of a person; like just the hair. I'm sure there's lots of videos for it, I just don't know how to search it correctly or the name of the technique haha. Any video suggestions or tips would be appreciated!

It sounds like masks are exactly what you're looking for. You'll just need to select the area you want to color first (like the hair) and make sure it's the only opaque part of the mask, and then you can get rid of the selection. Any time you color on that layer, it'll only be inside of the mask. Hopefully I'm explaining that all right!
