Sorry I'm late to comment, but I really appreciate what you said here Liam! I actually started brightening my OP thumbnails more specifically because of your advice. My bookshelves were made by my grandpa, who was a woodworker, and my set up is all due to a lot of hours of thought and tweeking by my husband, who is a photographer. It really means a lot to me that the community has embraced me and been so kind as I've fallen in love with this series. Thank you for the advice and for your kind words!

@@cerulean25_ Source where he said that? Anyways some of the best moments in OP for me involve battles because that's where themes and emotional stakes of characters get put to the test, usually the climax like Luffy ringing the bell through Enel, Luffy finishing Lucci or Luffy vs Ussop ect. and the main conceit of this story is about getting stronger/self-actualization. Fighting is integral to the storytelling of OP just as much as the other aspects are.

merphy is such a fresh prespective on analyzing one piece it's insane. she's completely pure of power scaling and well the community itself that it's a treat to listen to her prespective. Oh god THIS! I really can not stress enough how glad I am that Merphy is just so completely uninterested in powerlevels, powerscaling or pretty much anything that has to do with the strength of characters. She is there for the story, characters, world and the emotional attachment to all of it. And this is in my opinion the correct mindset to have when experiencing One Piece. @@furorteutonicus9045 Exactly! I feel like Dragon Ball made western anime fans have the mentality that all battle shonen manga is about fights and power scaling when that's cleary not what Oda is going for. What makes one piece so unique compared to other shonen manga or even manga in general is the world building and the characters personalities, they are way more important than fights or power scalling. It doesn't matter if zoro is stronger or weaker than sanji, what matters is their relationship with each other and the crew, as well as the way they impact the world. The reason Merphy never feels patronizing imo, is because she never claims flaws as facts. She is always very clear about the things that did not work for her, things that bothered her etc, while at the same time being very aware that every reader is different and just because she did not like something, that does not mean it won't work for other people. I’ve never read manga in my life, not even One Piece. I didn’t start watching the One Piece videos, a.k.a. the hour-plus videos, because I was interested in manga or even One Piece. I started watching those videos because I love Merphy and the longer I get to hang out with her in one video, the better.

Tired of power scale and who is better than who, she really brought to me the content about what really makes me love One Piece, the background, the feels & the meaning in the scenes. I don't watch One Piece because of its Shonen stuff, i spent more than 12 years grabbing the hand of this Manga because i. my eyes it is really unique and she always says what i really wanted to hear. Thank you Merphy, ty so much and keep going!

I love Merphy! I discovered her last year because I started a book club and she did a review on a book I had just read and I wanted to know someone else's thoughts. Not long after she decided to review One Piece and I was ecstatic. It really was euphoric to watch someone experience One Piece for the first time; the next video couldn't come fast enough. I love people's thoughts and theories on the beloved manga I've been reading for fifteen years (that's why I love GrandlineReviews). However, Merphy experimented with her One Piece content a few times, and took a break here and there and somewhere along the way I became less interested. Love all her content, but now I skim her extra-long One Piece content. (Your 11ish min content is perfect bite-size)

I think an important element in making her one piece videos so easy to get into is how they started increasing in length over time. the first one was part of a multiple-book review*, the first one piece-only videos were around 20 minutes, then they crept up in runtime to 30, 40, 50 to where they are now, so both regular viewers and op fans (who'll probably try to find the start of the review series if they get recommended one of her more recent videos) get a lower entry barrier and experience it as her having more to say with each arc, which as you said gives an impression of a "higher value" video *and i think that also serves as a bridge between the op viewers, who might stick around for the rest of the reviews and may continue watching her other content, and regular subscribers, who got introduced to the manga reviews in a "normal" video

Cause Rogersbase did one and it was fascinating listening to her as basically an outsider of the community (being a booktuber instead of a one piece youtuber) and her style of reviewing one piece is really great since she does it like you would an actual book. She seems like a genuinely great person and I hope she continues doing well as she keeps going on with one piece. Maybe that'll convince her to review other series as well

I took a 2ish year break from one piece and when I finally wanted to catch up I decided upon rereading it. I was 200 chapters in and honestly? It was getting a little bit tiring, although alabasta is an arc that I hold close to my heart and how excited I was for skypea and water 7 I've always found it hard to get excited about works of fiction, I've always found it more interesting to watch other people excitedly talk about a topic I also happened to share interest in. So in the hopes of revigorating my interest in the series, I started watching a ton of youtube content which, while has definitely made one piece more compelling and made me appreciate how fully realized this story is, it didn't take me long for losing my motivation to keep going with it, as much as I was enjoying, and regardless how much it means to me, I just decided to take a break from one piece for the time being. Then I found merphy's channel, she was currently reading enies lobby at the time and after watching her water 7 review, something shifted. One piece was all I could think about and I binge-watched the series from water 7 to wano in a single sitting, eagerly awaiting her reviews every Friday just as much as I would wait for another chapter after being caught up. She truly is something else and her perspective on this story is a breath of fresh air

I started reading/watching one piece because of Merphy. I started it specifically so I could watch her review/analysis videos on it. then I became hooked on it, which led me to other one piece content on KZread like your channel, as well as mr. morj, ohara, totally not mark, Sensei inc, etc. I probably would’ve eventually started one piece someday in the future simply because I dabble in the anime communities, but it would’ve taken a long while because the length of one piece was daunting. Merphy just gave me the little nudge I needed. I’m happy to be here:)

She has reviewed other Manga such as junji ito's work (Uzimaki and Tomoe). I would also like to explain a bit more as someone who watches *both* of her content because I do enjoy how she talks about writing and pacing is that she treats the Manga as another form of books. She treats it all the same but also explains that it is different because the visual aspect does changes the feel, but the main point is that she's an Avid reader overall. You're probably seeing a bigger viwership for the One Piece videos for Merphy *is* because a lot of her fanbase are also Manga readers, and then there's the added part of the the One Piece fandom. A lot of the fan base are also tired of the majority of the Booktuber world with how they handle their content and love Merphy for giving a more honest and simple approach a chance and prove to people that it does work, and it's not about to numbers for her either. she mentioned multiple times that she created the channel to talk about books as a whole. She even took the risky situation on November to not post anything for a whole month due to life situations and came right back to handling it (albet less videos) in her way. Not the Algaithm. She picked up One Piece because of the audience, but because she genuinely wanted to give it a try for it's story.

I agree with the compliment you gave regarding her not being condescending; which is one of the reasons I stuck with her channel, even when she covers things I'm not particularly interested in. I like how she doesn't get involved in KZread drama or contemporary politics and just focuses on her topics, i.e. books and stuff. Very good channel and nice person to listen to.

I am really glad that you did talk about the phenomenon of BookTubers moving over to manga. I personally haven't jumped into Murphy's videos for the exact reasons you've mentioned, the absolute length of the videos is stopping me flat as I'm used to my regular One Piece content directly in my KZread feed, but also I never even get to get excited by the videos with the bleh thumbnails. I've enjoyed some of her book work! And it's be cool to see what she has to say, but it's really asking too much and it's not standing out. So, an opinion has been shared.

She started reading One Piece just when I started re-reading it, so we're living about the same journey and it feels nice to check what she thinks about the stuff I literally just read. Another thing is that, while there's a ton of people reviewing One Piece' anime, there aren't as many reviewing the manga, so I've never really felt like I could totally relate to them (as I haven't seen the anime really, it's pace bores me). Also, having a female voice analizing One Piece always hits different. I love it!
