What Americans Think of Australia | Welcome To New York! 🗽

I fly from Australia to New York to ask random Americans what they think of us. After a spontaneous 18 hours of flying, I'm looking forward to eating New York pizza and getting yelled at some more. Follow me on Instagram for the extra scoop @welcometojosh

In this video I spontaneously decide to catch a flight to New York City, New York a.k.a. The Big Apple. I have some fun in the city but then get straight into interviewing the locals to ask what they think of Australia and Australians. Most New Yorkers didn't have a strong opinion, but the responses were mostly positive. Stay tuned because in my next video, I'll be finding out if New York City lives up to the hype...

I visited Australia a few times on liberty when I was in the US Navy . I've seen Brisbane , Townsville , Sydney , Adelaide , and Esperance . The Aussie people I've met were very welcoming and cheerful towards us . My ship sailed with the RAN for a bit , and they were very professional mariners , met a couple of diggers and they were great blokes . I got hammered in town with the locals a couple of times , and found that Aussies live up to their reputation as drinkers and partiers . Best Mates Ive ever met . The best steak I've ever eaten was at a Mum and Pop diner in Esperance . I watched some footy in a pub in Sydney over a couple of pints then strolled down the Opera House for a look see . Before sailing away for the last time I had some tucker from a wagon that served me a bowl of meat pie covered in mash and pea soup . That was in 1994.

I'm an American that has been an Australian citizen for 45 years. My wife and children are Australian, so I am well-aware of how little my fellow countryfolk in the States know about Australia. Back in the 70's I was a surfer in California and was interested in seeing what the surf was like in Asia and Australia. So, I took my first trip to Australia in 1977. I got to hang out in a lot of surfing communities on the New South Wales coast and Queensland. Typical of surfing communities in the day, most people looked and lived like me. Just blonde hair, blue eyed boys and girls, doing their days out on the waves, getting perfect tans and wasting away on pot and drink. I returned to Australia in 1979 to meet up with the same people, who looked and lived like me. On my last two weeks, I decided to check out the city of Melbourne. No sooner had I stepped off the train, I had a feeling I was in a very different type of Australia. It was like discovering a secret world. The buildings were Victorian, and the accents of the people were a mix of old English - both a high class and a cockney flow in speech. And unlike the surfing communities where almost everybody's hair was either white, blonde or sandy and skin tanned; the people in Melbourne that I saw had dark hair and pale skin. Anyway, I caught a tram that was full of school kids. All uniformed with long unkempt hair and ties worn loose, these boys and girls yelled at eachother with their posh-cockney-Australian accents, completely oblivious of the tall American stranger standing there looking out the window at the passing buildings. One little girl slapped a boy over the head as he sat, and muttered at him, ''Oi! Get off the seat, will ya!''. Then the young voice said, ''Excuse me Sir, there's a seat for you!''. I was in a slight daze, as the young girl tried to get my attention! Then came the ''Oi! Blondie! My mate's given up his seat for ya!''. All the kids moved themselves and their bags out of the way and offered me a seat. I thank them for the offer, and no sooner as I spoke, the kids recognised my accent and proceeded to ask me questions about America. In the meantime, a young girl (who looked like Wednesday Addams) sat next me, and scribbled out a list of places I should and should not visit. She handed the list to me, as the kids jumped off the tram and waved goodbye to me. I was left alone on this tram with a Do and Do Not Visit list. Being the dare devil that I was, I decided to go straight to St. Kilda which was under the DO NOT VISIT list. I saw some seedy shit going on there, and decided to take the list seriously. None the less I fell in love with Melbourne, and came up with the crazy notion that living in this city might make life a little more interesting than spending the rest of my life surfing in California. And then I met my wife (when she was a goth), and eventually had some kids, and have been living a life in a very interesting and ever changing part of Australia that nobody in the world even knows about.

I'm astonished that I managed to read every word you typed. However, speaking of your written essay; yes, cities in Australia such as Melbourne that you speak of and as such: the God forsaken city in Western Australia, Perth, are quite, if not certainly, isolated from the rest of the world. Australia really do shine more positivity than the negative side if I may be bold, and we as a whole nation filled with various backgrounds should be grateful to be here, for some of us that is. To end with a good note: "Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never will be slaves." Hope you have a blessed time for you and your family. [From QLD - good ol' brissy!]

I had the great pleasure of visiting Melbourne while in the US Navy in 1981. Australia was the No.1 country in the world for American sailors to go AWOL and the officers even had a pool for how many of us would jump ship. They never gave how many but I'm sure we left a few behind.... The reception and hospitality the Aussies gave us was *AMAZING* and will never be forgotten! 🇺🇸💥🇦🇺

Thank you for your kind words about Melbourne. I recalled that in 1989 a school friend had vacationed in Europe and the USA. When he returned to school he had a lot of stories to tell. He made some disparaging comments about the Americans he had met. Some of them had visited Australia. They had described Melbourne as a "quaint little town." At the time I retorted that at least in Melbourne, people could walk the streets without having to worry about being mugged or shot. The people that you interviewed seemed very friendly and pleasant.

Maybe because they are similar and you're wrong? They sound pretty similar to me even if I can tell the distinction. Britain has multiple regional accents (if you're not aware) people aren't very familiar with but aware they exist, and Australian could blend into that idea with American ears if it's not thick and not exposed to a ton of Australians speech. For close example, those guys Flight of the Concord, I thought they were British for the longest time. It sounded like a regional accent, and their humor comes off very British, but they're from New Zealand. Definitely not exposed to much NZ accents to know better then.

It is said by voice coaches that the Australian and New Zealand accents, in particular the latter, are the two most difficult English-speaking accents to master for the purposes of acting. It's something about the centre of the mouth remaining "hollow", I don't quite recall the explanation. Even Anthony Hopkins, when playing the Kiwi Burt Monroe, sounded nothing like a New Zealander, but did excel in his role as always. Every time I hear Americans on TV attempting to imitate an Australian, it comes across as a weird Cockney London brogue, which is, of course, one of the accent's main origins.

Godlovesyouwhenyourdancing you must not know anything about News and Media across the world people are exposed to our TV shows, pop culture, celebrities etc. so it’s much more common in places like the UK, AU, NZ, Etc to know allot about American pop culture. It’s not the same reverse however. Occasionally you’ll get some Canadian shows on TV like Degrassi etc but that’s about it

Godlovesyouwhenyourdancing Americans also aren’t exposed to Australians version of pop culture or way of life but Australians are exposed to American pop culture and American way of life why because of the movies because our news is spread throughout the whole world so yes there’s going to be a difference.
