What Am I Doing Wrong - Shifting Aids

Ойындар

www.thesimpit.com/ presents our new series of video that will take the time to analyse our racing efforts to see what we can learn or do to improve our results.
In this we test out the 4 different driving or shifting modes in iRacing. The different types of shifting aids are: None, Auto Blip, Auto Clutch and then finally automatic gearbox. Each of these types do have and advantage and or a dis advantage and in this video we find out the difference in speed on track.
**There was a mistake in this video regarding Auto Blip vs. Auto Clutch. In this video Shaun clarifies the correct differences. • What Am I Doing Wrong ... **

Here's what you have wrong... Auto-clutch is a driving aid, auto-blip is actually 2 driving aids, auto-blip AND auto-clutch. So many people don't seem to want to believe this, but it's easy enough to prove just by looking at the pedal indicator in the various shift modes. You can see it even in this video. Order of difficulty most to least- No aids, auto-clutch, auto-blip, automatic

I wonder if this is the John Stevens I've raced with on iRacing? I think what Shaun was trying to get at, was, what is the fastest way to get around? For his part, he picked auto blip, which is what I also use, although many can shift just by heel and toeing. Maybe I've used paddles and shift assists for so long, it's hard for me to go back. But I do trust Shaun when he runs a ton of laps and says, "this has been the fastest way for me."

Great informative video Shaun! I find it very difficult to use paddles and no assists, for some reason my brain won't let me time it right. Short calibrating my clutch and using an H-pattern with no assists is the way I go, so much fun and very fast! Keep up the good work!

Yup, nice video. I didn't even research the effects of these shifting aids. My viewers and fellow racers in the forums advised me to turn off all driving aids as soon as I dare. It made it much more difficult for me in the beginning, I was lapping at least a second or two slower, but it was worth it in the long run. In about a week of practice I was about as good as with aids, and after another week I became far better, no regrets.

I went from auto clutch to no shifting aids (lifting and shifting up, blipping the throttle down) this week at Barcelona, with the auto clutch my fastest time was 2:02:9 (I had been stuck on that time for quite a while without any improvement,) when I changed to lift and shift my third lap out of the pits was a 2:01:3, my fastest time overall since changing is a 2:00:8, I couldn't believe that I could gain so much laptime by changing the shifting method. A good way to test this is to go to an oval, start from the same exact point on the track and do one lap with each method and you can replicate the lap pretty easily and clearly see the difference.

  • @whaletail935
    @whaletail9357 жыл бұрын

I'm pretty sure that auto-blip also includes auto clutch. You can verify this by enabling the driving inputs HUD (which shows steering angle + throttle/brake/clutch bar graphs). The difference between auto-blip and auto-clutch is that the game will blip during downshifts only with the former enabled. Thus you can destabilize the car during entry if you don't manually blip with auto-clutch enabled.

I'm one of the older iRacers around in our community and what I do as I do not want to have the risks of misshift is: I select most of the times auto blib (which is 2 aids: clutch and blib) and coming out of corners with a 'long' straight ahead I use the clutch to upshift and by that doing fast up-shifts. The down shifts I just do not use the clutch. That gives me the benefit of fast upshifts and no risks of misshifts during downshifts.

Shaun, my one suggestion for you is to shorten the throw of your clutch pedal. This will help your timing with using paddle shifters to up and down shift. You're loosing time between shifts do to the long throw of the clutch pedal. Keep up the good work with your channel!

Yep, always short calibrate your clutch with just a small amount of dead zone at the start. I think setting it somewhere between 5-35% and 5-50% is the ideal range.

He doesn't use clutch under downshifts at all. Only for the upshifts. But you're right upshifts can be even faster with short-throw clutch. It's also help with clutch kick if you need to have some oversteer midcorner.

Shaun, this will be good to watch you learn and develop. You were left foot braking, and not using the clutch consistently on down shits and shifting through corners, not just up on exit. Right foot braking and heel-toeing might help to reduce the missed shifts. It's tricky to get the hang of. Keep up the good work

I like to use the correct method depending on the car. I still suck in cars that require heel-toe shenanigans but I get better at it each time I try. I found that the classic Porshe RSR in Asseto Corsa is an excellent car to hone these skills in. It absolutely requires you to correctly blip on down shifts or else it will lock up the rear. Just be sure to turn off damage when you start learning or else you will blow up the gearbox after only three turns.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but to my knowledge, even with auto clutch, optimum shift times come when the throttle is lifted, just like it would be when using a real clutch. I'd imagine that's why the shifts still felt elongated and the car sounds off while shifting with the throttle left in. Am I wrong here?

Shaun you don't need to blip in the MX5, you can shift it like a normal street car with a manual, you just need to get the timing right. I personally found it hard to get my timing consistent with paddles, with paddles I would often miss shifts but with my H shift I was far more consistent. I would still occasionally miss a shift however it would rarely effect me and a little "defensive driving" can help in those rare situations. Over race length I was always noticeably quicker in the MX5 shifting with my H shifter and no aids.

Mechanical feel through the shifter is essential in timing a shift correctly. It's like driving without a force feedback wheel. So until someone makes a force feedback shifter I'll keep using auto clutch, at least for cars that need them.

Hi Sean. Interesting to see how auto-blip was working for you. My understanding is that going from Auto-Clutch to Auto-Blip should require you to use the clutch on auto-blip just not having to rev-match the engine. Another interesting observation from your videos is that when you had all aids turned off that you were able to down-shift without using the clutch and just blipping the throttle. I thought you must use the clutch on up and down-shifts with all aids turned off. As for paddle-shifting, from my experience driving is that when using paddles on an h-pattern car it seems like the game expects the shift to take a certain amount of time and will throw you into neutral if you're took quick on the paddle. Thanks for taking the time to analyze the differences.

Auto-blip includes auto-clutch. Shaun is not correct about the order of the 3 levels of aid. Auto-clutch is the mildest aid, auto-blip adds blip+clutch, and automatic is blip+clutch+shift.

so I'm in love with automatic shifting, mainly because of the reproducibility, but then again you have to ask yourself: what's the point of driving in a simulator if you are willingly taking the aids. shouldn't you take all the risks exactly because it's a racing game and just learn all the techniques just because you can..?!

  • @driver8703

It mostly depends on time. I prefer to drive mostly GT3/GTE/Prototype cars with paddle shift-clutch only when taking off type cars. If I want to drive Aussie Supercars or a nascar around a road close for a race or two i would use the aids because I don’t really have the time to learn the skill just for some fun type races. I came to this video because full auto is a no go for me and auto clutch wouldn’t let me shift down when I wanted, so now I’m going to try auto blip. If driving these types of cars forced me to learn new skills to drive them and be somewhat competitive then I would much rather spend my limited time in my preference series and totally ignore some cars that can be great fun to drive.

Love this video. Good job, Shaun! I'm one of the guys complaining about the speedshifting racket 😄 But I must say that you make it harder than necessary for yourself with lots of shifting/clutching going on where you don't need it. Especially on the last turn with no aids all sorts of pedal action was going on and I don't have a clue what you were doing there! Also, LFB and clutching don't mix. Too much going on, making things harder for yourself switching back and forth between pedals.. How are you ever going to maintain threshold braking, tapering off the brakes like a pro? Heel/toe all the way, baby! Anyway, looking forward to more videos, without speedshifting! 👏

Essentially what you are doing everytime you ham the gas while shifting is power shifting it. Everytime you shift just lift off the gas really quick and back on. sometimes you dont even have to lift all the way out. somewhere between 30-50% and it will shift without bouncing the rev limiter. The engine transition will be a lot smoother and you wont get the spike of power coming out of the corner. you will notice a good .1-2 seconds faster.

I'd suggest using a separate shifter, and not the paddles on the wheel when shifting with a manual clutch. I prefer this because my muscle memory is used to cars with auto cut-off and auto blip using the pedals. And when I use a seperate shifter, my muscle memory is much more used to the proper order of operations.

I think your understanding of auto blip is wrong. It is auto clutch + auto blip -- you can see on the meter, the clutch bar spikes every time you pull a paddle. Long time since I've driven iracing, but iirc I used to run this mode and I definitely could rev in neutral and jump into first start.

Just drive the car the way it is in real life. If it's GT3 or formula 1 use auto clutch/throttle blip. If you're driving flat 6 series just auto clutch and do a manual rev match on downshifts. Something like skip barber cars you need to lift for upshifts and rev match for downshifts. If it's h-pattern drive it like an h-pattern and do heel toe.

On average using any auto clutch aids will give you a slower time over a manual clutch - this has been proven time and again.

Iracing need to penalize more the no use of the correct shiftting method for each car, i have seen people shiffting the Nissan GTP ZX-T with paddle shifters and with all aids. Is a simulator no?

Yeah lets penalize people even more that don't have the setup to match the car they are driving, have fun with even smaller grids.

All of the shift aids are terrible. You can get away with them in the MX5 with a tiny engine or in Oval racing where shifting isn't all that important anyway. And maybe also in GT3 with traction control. But in a lot of cars cars there are corners where the aids do something completely wrong. Sometimes it'll burn a few tenths per lap one very lap, but even worse it might make the car underivable by causing snap oversteer during a shift. The correct shifting technique depends on the corner. Aids should be disabled so you can do hard fast shifts most of the time and gentle ones that don't upset the car as required. Sure you'll miss shift sometimes especially learning a new car or track, but that should mostly be limited to practice sessions and you'll get the hang of it by the time you go racing.

My muscle memory would never let me drive like that "no aid" situation, without heel n toe. Its absolutly cringetastic! Clutching at the Apex, wth... How could it even be a viable option? No one would drive like this in real life.

I understand the favoritism towards auto blip, however in a sim racing environment where ultimate realism is the goal, auto blip seems completely out of place, because a real manual transmission would never be able to handle the abuse that auto blip entails

Daniel Schoolmeester Sorry but you're wrong, do some research on "Synchronized down shift rev-matching system" developed by Nissan. They have been using on selected GT-R (NISMO) and 370Z for a few years now. So yeah your statement is wrong, there's rev-matching on manual transmission cars. Cheers

IF iRacing was the be all end all Racing Sim which is certainly NEVER will be , It wouldn't even have ANY Aids but be HARD Core, Pure and simple , as for shifting that is subjective and comes down to the actual car model and how well the mathematics were done to replicate the mass and inertia from the rotation of shafts engine and gearbox , ALL of this has a role in the real world and I have found NO sim that actually comes close to my real world racing experiences .
