What Am I Doing Wrong - Shifting Aids Part 2 Corrections

Ойындар

www.thesimpit.com/ would like to apologize for an error made in our last show on Shifting Aids. For the most part in theory the point of the show was correct but there was a mistake about the difference between Auto Clutch and Auto Blip.
In this video Shaun clarifies the CORRECT difference between the 2 types of shifting aids. He also talks about what he has learned since that last test about shifting in iRacing.

I can never use flapity flip flop paddles along with a clutch it makes no sense to me, I'm sure as others have said if you were using a H pattern you would not have any issue. I find H pattern with H pattern manual cars also gets you driving more with the flow of those cars even if its slower in some ways.

Thanks for a great video. I just got pedals with a clutch and decided to go the no shifting aid path and I'm also struggling, especially with downshifts when I need to blip the throttle.

Holding the paddle down for the entirety of the shift is the only way to manually shift with paddles, but it's still very difficult. Upshifts were fine, eventually, but I never figured out the downshift timing well enough to develop the necessary muscle memory. At least not in the MX-5 or SRF (the Skippy wasn't a problem). Moving to an H-pattern helped immediately. I'm not sure why, as I was holding the paddles down forever but still missing shifts, but for whatever reason, the timing issues disappeared with the H-pattern. Just to be clear, I clutch-in during upshifts, but simply blip my downshifts (clutchless).

Here is what i do, in AC recently but used to be iRacing, i use Autoclutch but i drive as if i dont have any aids: heel and toe with full clutch and i feel that edge on exits and shifting you talk about, cause if you forget the aids your inputs are normally so fast that it overrides the aid, most sims override the autoclutch if you use use it, under the hood it kinda interpolate between the auto and the real clutch as you press it. So that is what i find effective, you have the edge of no aids but with the safety net of autoclutch, you can even focus more of the bliping at no cost even if you short clutch by accident or even forget about the clutch entirely. Cheers on the content as always Shaun.

My method - no aids, clutch to upshift of course, left foot braking with manual blip and no clutch to downshift. Someone also suggested under the last video to short calibrate the clutch pedal which I agreed with as well.

  • @xavierthomas1980

My suggestion for you would be to use no aids and use a shifting and braking method according to the car and not default to one method for all cars: For cars that have seamless up-shift (can be electronic or seamless gearbox) just keep you foot flat and click the paddle shift. For cars with "dog" boxes (most race gearboxes are) you do not need to use the clutch to shift (like with a bike gearbox) but it is smoother and faster to lift a bit for up-shift and blip for downshift. Timing is everything and on the downshift it is almost impossible to get the timing and the engine response to the "blip" exactly right so in this case using the clutch is a big help to smooth things. So for some car you end up having to right foot brake, that is not so hard to learn, but you should not forget to left foot brake because of this. Right foot braking is for the corners with downshift and only in the braking zone, if you have to tap the brakes to adjust the balance of the car mid-corner I recommend to still use left foot braking. To learn the footwork quickly, do it all the time, in training and in race (do not care about the results for a couple of weeks) in the sim and in your daily driver. And last but not least: RALLY, RALLY RALLY I was thinking that maybe the cause of the "euros" mid-pack times being faster. Most of us learn to heel and toe (to start uphill at least) around 18 years old when passing the driver's license, and once I got into sim-racing with steering wheel and pedals I never really even thought of enabling driving aids (except ABS and TC to compensate my lack of skills)

I'm in agreement with the guys saying you should use the h pattern if you want to go full manual to make it easier (more realistic too, win/win), I've tried driving H pattern shift cars in sims with paddle shift and it was always very weird to turn off clutch assist in that situation, in reality paddle shifted cars tend to not require the clutch for up/down shifts anyway.

Shaun you can actually left foot brake with no driving aids because the clutch isn't needed when downshifting the MX5. Just a blip of the throttle and you're good.

Comment about heel and toe braking and the switch to braking feet.. Brake slightly harder before the corner, get into the correct gear early and then switch feet.. move both feet right one pedal and then you can left foot brake the remainder of the speed off as you glide into the apex, it sounds alot but simply all you do is select correct gear, move your feet and complete the corner.

Mx5 Global cup has fixed setup yet any driving assists can be used. The mx5 is not a gt3 car. The left foot braking point is a good one, a lot of speed can gained inn the mx5 with assists on allowing it to be driven like a gt3 car. Be really interesting to have a mx5 series not only with fixed setups, but with fixed driving assists. Yes mis shifts cost time and position and often podium spots, but that's part of the circumstances that exist in these cars. I've lost many spots on the the track through missing a gear but it makes another thing I need to focus on and adds to the intensity. Cheers Craig Barton.

Using an H-Pattern gear shift or a sequential lever shifter is way better to match that synchronicity of brake, clutch and throttle. Using paddle shifting with heel and toe techniques really messes up your brain.

Why don't you use one of your shifters? I've seen you using it some times, and you are good heel and toeing, so it'd be a lot more natural for you to do it that way with a shifter, than with the paddles. The paddles are very odd to use on a manual car like the MX5. For me at least.

what I want to know is the different methods for each car. I drive ovals right now and I know it's just as simple as clutch and shift, I see these cars like mazda use heel-toe, but what about f1 cars? do they heel-toe?

  • @Case_

    @Case_

    7 жыл бұрын

No, F1 drivers don't heel and toe - there's no need to, the shifting is electronic, it does the work for the driver. They don't even have clutch pedals - they have hand clutch paddles on their wheel, but it's only used for launching the car.

What are you doing wrong? Not using HPattern shifter. Paddles shouldn't be used with a clutch period. Try it and you'll see your down shifts heel toe improve drastically, because it's more natural. Please do a part 3 with the correct shifter for the car otherwise you'll end up convincing people to drive paddles and clutch, which is wrong.

Driver Mod Gaming you're splitting hairs, and there are few exceptions to this rule. I'm not talking about launching, just shifting. The mx5 is hardly a GT car, and it uses a H Pattern shifter. This is how iracing intends the car to be driven. I just think it's irresponsible to display bad driving habits, because people that don't know are wrongly mislead and now they believe clutch with paddles to shift is actually a thing, when really it's not, (disregarding any rare exceptions of course). People are influenced by Shaun and I feel that he should be doing it the correct way. Besides, it's more fun with the H Pattern, and just to clear things up, I do drive this car in iracing with no aids, clutch on upshift, clutchless down shift with blip and left foot braking. It's works and heel toe isn't even necessary.

Dub Chain i find heel toeing a simplified way of what your doing. To say its not necessary is wrong. There isnt a right way to drive its whatever works for you as long as it works. But i agree the mx5 should be used with an h pattern

This is about improving with the car and track your on, I agree more and more cars are going paddle shifter with twin clutch as it leaves the driver with both hands on the wheel and cpu auto blipping to match revs, but what happens when you want to race something without, something that isn't mid engine (weight transfer) , even without rear wheel steering..which is vast majority of what is raced? Then you have the enjoyment of racing, when nothing is neutral, you have to consider so many things and your opponent, why so many sim racers love racing older cars or hyper or Formula cars, as you need skill, thus why Shaun is making these videos. You can off course drive in a sim car that are made as easy as possible for driver, or try to race a monster or anything between, I know what I get my kicks out of, and it's not easy paddle shift , well balanced cars.

Driving MX5 with playstation-shifters with whatever aids is just no sim-racing at all, but i can understand why people using auto-clutch in iRacing. The clutch-physics just sucks like in Raceroom. Normally it depends very much on the sim if using aids is faster or not. AC is always better with manual blip, but sequential-shifting with auto-clutch can be a benefit in Group C, Historic F1 or the DTM-cars with six gears. With a lots of shifting and trailbreaking auto-clutch wins, i measured that. With old cars like a F40, Yellowbird or even the MX5 it´s better to do it proper or at least no disadvantage. Just feels more natural and the cars behaving like that. In pCars auto-clutch even sucks in the GT3-class. The shifting times are ridiculous long or you get scripted miss-shifts like in the Sauber C9 with just one advantage: you can´t stall the engine. Funny thing is, in Dirt 4 it feels completely like a big disadvantage to do everything proper. Lots of miss-shifts, scripted or not, but i was always more dominant with that against the AI-times and got even in the Top 10 leaderboards a few times.
