What AFCO shock expert, Rex Merritt taught me!

Well, I decided to hit the road and hook up with one of the nicest guys I know in the racing world, Rex Merritt. I took my shocks up to his shop to find out what they are and if they are ready to race. Like always, I left with some great knowledge. Listen and learn what the expert has to say about shock dyno and tuning for these dirt modifieds. If you know Rex, you know he has been around a while and knows what he is talking about as an AFCO shock expert. Hope you enjoy!
Special thanks to Rex Merritt, AFCO Racing, Bryke Racing, Arkie Apparel, NLG Printing Company and Bod High Productions.

I road race pro stuff and I gripe about my dyno. You guys rock! Honestly, that's a really clever way to test. Great work!

I remember a few years ago. Shocks were just about the most important part on a race car. It’s crazy how it switched to preloading your springs.

I remember 25 years ago when shocks were the most important thing. Then pull bar stack, then spring indexing, then 0 indexing. Then shocks again hahaha. Once upon a time I remember hearing that tires were the most important thing. Personally I'm a firm believer in getting your car to do what you or the driver needs the most. Experiment and keep what you like and get rid of anything you don't. I'm also glad we are not stacking springs in these modifieds like the late models. I'm not sure why they let them do that. One spring one shock per wheel would help keep some of the cost down that are already out of control. Just my opinion anyways. Pre- loads are easy, you don't need a spring smasher in the trailer to figure it out every night. It's really just getting the rate creep that you want in a spring.

Well long before I was around someone like a Rex Merritt, Wayne Brooks, or Kelly Shryock. I would only buy Afco products for a street rod, or racing application. Although long before Afco, Rex was once affiliated with Bilstein shocks. Because I recall him attempting to sell my late dad on Bilstein shocks. Because Rex already knew I was dead set on Afco products. Including the shocks...

Yeah I was kind of the same way. It seemed like everything I got from Afco worked the way I wanted it to.

Yes, I know Rex Merritt. I have worked with him on his car in the past... He had the long yellow enclosed trailer...

From every shock rebuilder.... Leave the mounting hardware at home.
