I don't read books normally and I really enjoyed all of these. Possible the only books I'll ever read for the next decade. Everything about it just clicks to me. Araragi, the comedy, the serious moments, all the references from media, japanese mythology and folktales, and it's something you definitely can't get anywhere else.

i cant even pick between either the light novels or the anime i love both but they are different. I cant even really define what makes it so great but if i had to give it a try i'd say its - for the novels : a easy read pages just flow books end before u know it and u slowly familairize yourself in this very rich and deep world full of quirky conversations that arent totally meaningles really just start reading. The anime is for me personally amazing mostly due to the art style and how well it fits the story, the empty backgrounds and very stylized actions and really there are some real god tier highlight episodes among it that rival any other god tier anime episode and not just because of flashy animations its the things the show does with its animations and their willingness to experiment within its boundries. really again just watch. Also i love how i always fail at getting friends to watch it by now i enjoy the questionable looks if ppl catch a glimps of it simply because if they just knew what they where missing. good video btw, you resurrected a craving to binge the shit out of it again sometimes weird youtube recommendations are good i guess. thunks

I've been reading manga for as long as I remember. Now and again I'd stop by my local Barnes & Noble to get a new volume, but every time I mystified by these novels with gorgeous cover art that I seemed to find in random places all over the shelves (due to how they were ordered alphabetically). Not knowing anything about the series, I bought the first volume (Bakemonogatari 01, going by Japanese release order), and over the course of the next year I finished all twenty volumes of the English release. Its likely my favorite English release of any series, despite its inconsistencies. I dont think I would have ever gotten into the series had it not been for me finding these books, and for that they will always hold a special place in my heart; Amazing video, its a great reminder of what I love about the Monogatari Series!

I've looked and the English TL. There are mistakes, liberties are taken, and there are omissions. It is probably one of the best LN translations there. The author is a linguist. Its a miracle anyone even bothered to TL this at all.

In regards to your comments on the spines, I've seen some creative ways that some people get around that including turning only the ones that break the unity to face forward. Depending on where the titles don't line up, it can look pretty nice! Sometimes. I've also seen some people who'll do it in a pattern even if it's a book already uniform, basically just playing with how it's displayed until it looks just right. Personally, I've never cared too much over whether the spines are perfectly aligned (whether it be in size or just the title- heck, I have some Petshop of Horrors that are reprints vs my originals, and I still love them). But I've still got to admit that some setups look really cool when arranged with turned books, and it's a creative work around

Kudos to the light novel review. As someone who read then watch Bake, I decided to read the light novel, w/o touching the anime. Except watching certain specific scenes, given the fact SHAFT really gave their all, how god-tier the avant-garde adaptation they did, its like NISIOISIN himself. I know I missed a lot from the anime, but man, I love to read LNs w/o touching the anime.

This is pretty late, but I think Funimation has all or most of the anime. At the very least it has the full 15 episodes of the first season. That's how I watched it! Weirdly on the TV app I was using, Spanish subs were the only option so I had to go back and forth between Funimation and Crunchyroll. Also for some reason I thought your editing and pace of your script was perfect for a video on the Monogatari series lol. Very enjoyable.

I tried getting into the Monogatari anime back in 2014-2015 but for some reason I could not for the life of me tolerate Hanekawa. I enjoyed most of Bake when she wasn't in focus but ended up not liking it overall because of her and eventually dropped the series after finishing Neko Kuro and realizing the next arc was ANOTHER Hanekawa arc. Tried watching it again this August and while I still didn't really like Hanekawa in the first few seasons, I was able to get past her and really loved the show. Once I watched Neko Shiro, which I had originally dreaded, I actually ended up LIKING her! Second Season ended up being one of my favorite seasons of anime ever and I binged the entire show in less than two weeks. After loving the anime so much I figured I mayas well read the novels too, so I'm now 4 books in and about to start Nise. It's hard to say for sure but with all of the extra dialogue and Araragi internal monologues, I may end up enjoying the novels more than the anime. Needless to say I'm excited as hell to finish through Zoku Owari and get to some new material! I'm someone who IS very bothered by the spine issue you talked about, so I've been reading digitally while I wait for a good time to pick up physical copies of all the books for cheap.

I also really liked Senjougahara immediately and am not much of a fan of harem/ecchi aspects in anime to begin with (why did I decide to watch this show? idk don't ask me) so all of those things added up soured me on Hanekawa pretty quickly, especially on my first attempt to watch where I went in not really knowing what to expect. Side note: I get that Hanekawa isn't the only character in the series with an aspect of "fakeness" about her or that puts on a facade (in fact MOST of the characters do), but hers is the most stifling and character defining in my opinion which is where my issues with it stem from.

@@itmealice For me her fakeness, the impact it's shown having on her mental health and the way she overcomes it is honestly my favorite part of her character. She isn't fake for personal gain or out of malice, she was physically and emotionally abused as a child and thus developed it as a defense mechanism. (if I'm always nice and forgiving to people then they won't hate me.) I guess she was the most relatable for me, and I saw parts of myself in her.

you are sorely mistaken if the honorifics and 鬼お兄ちゃん are your main gripes. nisioisin doesnt simply toy with words from time to time, its a huge portion of his writing. i mean take a look at his name, 西尾維新, have fun cramming that nuance into a subtitle. reading bakemonogatari rn and i have to say i have no fucking clue how this can be translated without doubling the word count with translator notes. for example the entire stapler scene seems to be a setup for the double entendre 面の皮が厚そう. just looked up the english version and they translated it to "thick skin" which is just not at all what the expression means. nuance will always be lost with translations but specifically with this series there is just so much that gets lopped off.

The watch order for the series is a bit complicated because the entries aren't clearly labelled "Season 2, Season 3, etc", so it's best just to follow the release order. Therefore, the watch order for the franchise is the following: Bakemonogatari (2009) - 15 episodes Nisemonogatari (2012) - 11 episodes Nekomonogatari Kuro (2012) - 4 episodes Monogatari Series: Second Season (2013) - 26 episodes Hanamonogatari (2014) - 5 episodes Tsukimonogatari (2014) - 4 episodes Owarimonogatari (2015) - 12 episodes Kizumonogatari (film trilogy, 2016-2017) - 3 films Koyomimonogatari (2016) - 12 episodes Owarimonogatari 2nd Season (2017) - 7 episodes Zoku Owarimonogatari (2018) - 6 episodes Note that most of the series are not ordered chronologically, but that is intentional. The show is intended to be experienced in the order it was released, not in the chronological order.

3:22 it's very common to call men around the ages of 16-30 "onii-san" even if you're not familiar with them in Japan, it's like saying "young sir" but a little less formal? So while she does use -chan in stead of -san, between her flat demeanor and the fact that her interactions with Araragi start off as being something she's reluctantly forced to do on orders, the familiarity implied by -chan is sarcastic. "Kind monster sir" is not actually a terrible translation for the meaning, as it has a sort of fake deference in the same breath as a tongue-in-cheek insult. It does lose the wordplay, so I wish the localized novels had just used romanization and furigana to help explain the wordplay for people who don't understand some Japanese words. But, it's actually a fine translation. Can't say that of everything in the localization butchery, but hey, I wanted to defend something I thought wasn't half bad just because I felt like it :)

Your commentary on honorifics and pun phrases can apply to just about all of this sort of media, not just light novels. Anime, manga, official or fan translated - ALL of it can suffer unfortunately. Hey, translators: we're watching the sub version or reading the manga; we actively sought it out this way. *Leave the poor honorifics and complicated phrasing alone. We're nerds, we'll figure it out (or leave a TN if you're that worried about losing someone's attention).*

@@TheKeysmash That is true, but I'm not the kind of guy to reread/rewatch things, so if I am to experience something once, especially something as lengthy as this, I would want to experience every little piece. Maybe I could get a Japanese man with a nice voice to read them to me and explain the little things.

This review being anything to go by, there's plenty to miss in the anime by sheer visual illiteracy, which you're sure to develop by never going back to anything more than once. I just hope people with that attitude aren't hired to build any bridges. Or participate in society in general, can't imagine what good would ever come of it.
