What about Colors? Kodak CCD vs Sony CMOS

There is a constant discussion about which sensor produces the best colors. In this video I put a Kodak CCD sensor head to head with a Sony CMOS sensor to find out if there is any truth to this discussion!
Worth noting: we are only comparing colors between these two sensors. Not sharpness, resolution, dynamic range, etc. There is no contest in regards to those items.

When Pentax moved from CCD to CMOS for example from K10D to K20D there wasn't much any colour difference at all in ISO 100-200 range, very very similar from what i remember of impressions at the time. Not sure if retrospectively something has been noticed that gone unnoticed back then :D Perhaps the formulation of the sensors themselves, the filter dyes, was changed on newer models. Arguably more muted colours in RAW indicates a GOOD thing though: this means that there is a lot more colour gamut available. You can always just punch up the colour saturation but you can't overcome lack of gamut. I also don't think you can just look at the hue and ignore the DR and resulting lightness, as that changes the hue perception. You say "we can just reduce the saturation" but if you had really highly vibrant objects besides less saturated ones, where you're pushing against the gamut limit of the sensor on the more vibrant ones, it would more equal them out, making for a presentation that is less true to life, overall flatter; while when you punch up the saturation you can just go to the limit of your output colour space on the most saturated object and you still have the saturation differences preserved. Though it is to be kept in mind that while some of our monitors have pretty strong gamut, a lot of it gets lost in printing, CMY dyes are not great. So that's the question of ultimate target as well.

Yeah I agree with this statement. After doing more research and testing. I find that there are much more variables at play than what I discussed in this video. Manufacturer color science being one of the biggest. I also did a better follow-up video to this one, where I compared two Olympus cameras which I think was much more balanced.

Colton, you did an excellent job with this video. I really appreciate the amount of effort you contributed to document these facts. I had a camera sales guy try to convince me I should spend double the amount on a 100mp Phase One CMOS digital back when I already had my mind made up to buy a CCD 80MP Phase One digital back. I tried to educate him but he swore I did not know what I was talking about.. even though I explained to him that I already own and tested CCD 14bit cameras and the Pentax 645D rendered more color information that any of my CMOS sensor cameras (a7rIV & 5ds). I am happy with my IQ 280.

Thanks for watching! Those are some amazing backs! I hope to play around with some Phase One gear sometime because there just isn't a lot of information on them! I've heard good things about their newer cameras too, but it's hard to beat some of the older gear they put out that still kicks out great images! If I could only find a way to make my Mamiya 645 Pro compatible with digital backs I'd be in heaven! There are definitely more variables to consider and play with. I hope to make more videos exploring these ideas.

Since CMOS and CCD image sensors are ‘color blind’, a filter in front of the sensor allows the sensor to assign color tones to each pixel. so its all the filter and the signal processing and control units aka digic processor.

The sensors only record brightness on each pixel. The filters over them determine how well red, green, and blue are separated. The "final" color is determined by software. In theory, if the rgb separations are good, software can produce any color you want anywhere. Some cameras presumably have more effective color separation filters than others.

What we see in raw processing software is either embedded preview JPEGs or colors converted from raw. The conversion matrices depend on the software, and may be quite different from camera makers' intention. The left images say "Embedded Preview" - this seems to suggest these are JPEG previews from the camera instead of processed raw through Lightroom. What about the right images, are they also Embedded Previews? I haven't used ACR for about 10 years but I recall it producing ugly pale orange tones, and only appropriate Camera Profiles make the colors look about right.

My thoughts would be more the difference between old Olympus vs more modern Sony. I feel like it's the companies decision on color science. Main reasoning being many companies use Sony sensors while having different colors. Canon being one that makes there own sensors also having very different colors. Still very interesting to me though. Also as someone has already mentioned the lens can change the perceived color as well. Different chemical coatings mainly being the decider in that respect. I wonder if the people making the decisions in colors priorities have changed over a few decades? The old colors do seem more desirable to me as well

From what I've found, there's a tier of having to post process to achieve what you want in terms of color saturation (that depends on your desired taste, it's all subjective). My CCD equipment is generally more saturated and closer to the general desired look, next my CMOS/MFT Olympus gear is pretty close tbh (a lot of times just hitting auto while sampling the subject area is enough for most tweaks for that general purpose desired look), and then lastly my foveon cameras require a lot of finese to achieve their potential (but when you do, you get great contrast/details that swing way above similarly sized sensors... if you have good enough light and glass to go with it, which for Sigma isn't that hard glass wise). I would take my Olympus E-M5.ii or iii over the foveon gear in all situations aside from studio lighting. Straight out of camera Olympus colors are generally good enough to use for most personal stuff, so shooting jpeg+raw for backup while having whatever profile you want can handle most situations. My newest foveon is a SD Quattro H, which I would generally choose over any other body short my Pentax 645z for studio work with controlled lighting. That said, I've used a fp L a few times in studio and liked the CMOS results out of that with less work. My dream camera right now is a cut d own quattro body on l-mount with an aps-c sized version of the fp L cmos sensor package, ibis, and the same menu system/updated screen of the fp (L) bodies but with tilting. Sigma is releasing a lot of aps-c l-mount lenses, either they know Leica will go back on their word a second time and revive the TL/CL, or they're going to release an aps-c body for l-mount (hopefully cmos, I love foveon's finished results, I don't love how much you have to baby it).

In further testing, I found that my Olympus E-500 (CCD) and my Olympus OM-D E-M10 III (CMOS) had extremely similar results straight from RAW images. That video is up on my channel as well. The conclusions of that is that there are far more variables at play than just the sensor type. In fact, It leads me to believe that manufacturer color science has more impact over the output than the sensor being used in the camera. A lot more can be tested on this subject!

The fact that the images appear more muted with CMOS is due to its higher dynamics. The phenomenon already existed with the SUPER CCDs from Fuji. Sony however was infamous for the magenta cast, witch your test shows, this was an issue with sky's and skintones. So you picked the worst cmos hehe.. might have been an issue with the early sony Bsi sensors. Some of the accurate sensors are cmos found in dinar digital backs. The have sensors speceficly made for shooting art and museum objects, but alos using a multi shor technology that provides a more depth and acurent colors. when shooting multi shot each pixel is captured by every primary color makes a huge difference! But one of the best colors I ever seen from "normal" cameras comes from Nikon D700 a cmos made by Panasonic. I have a severe case of GAS. Among all my cameras, my venerable Sony A7 has the worst colours, especially under artificial lights or worse under several types of lights. The auto WB is pathetic. Years ago, I bought an Olympus E-400 (last 10 Mp CCD sensor DSLR, Olympus switched to CMOS afterwards) and compared it to my modern OM-D E-M1 / E-M5. In day lights, colours are a bit different (not necessarily better). IIRC the sky was more red with the E-400 and more green on the OM-D. However, when I processed the OM-D raw files under DxO Filmpack and generated an image with the E-410 colours (which was a CMOS DSLR), I got the same colour as the E-400. Maybe the old Bayer matrix had different filters, but I suspect that software processing is the main cause of the differences. My 2 cents

Also 4/3 DSLR lenses are bigger than they M4/3 equivalents. The viewfinder is decent but smaller than what I got on old 35 mm SLR (like my Olympus OM-1). So far, I did not find more beautiful colours than the Sigma SD Quattro in "Standard" profile. I tried reproduce them by generating an ICC or DCP profile and using it with DxO Photolab, starting from some Olympus raw file. The result was a total failure with "psychedelic" colours. Although I used a cheap colour chart for my experiments, I guess that the process was not too bad as I got good results if I replaced the Sigma with the Sony A7. I suspect that Sigma raw processing software (SPP) cheats a bit, as the "Neutral" profile is closer to what I see. The "Standard" profile is nicer but invents colours, the result is often surprising but very good.

CMOS certainly has some advantages over CCD. ISO performance, and cost being two of them. But CCD had advantages too in image quality. It would be interesting to have seen what CCD sensors could have become had companies continued R&D.

For me, the obsession over colours straight out of camera is not worth it at all. I always do some tweaking in post-production with my work, and it's possible to just apply basic conversion LUT in a matter of seconds on all of the material in Lightroom. Why would I want to choose the inferior sensor when I can replicate it 1 to 1 on CMOS and no living soul would ever see the difference?

That's a great point too and in this case I think all opinions on this subject are valid. Everyone wants something different and that's great! The test was a great idea, but I don't know how representative it is to what you're trying to prove. Your approach - keeping as many things comparable and constant - was good, but still has some issues. Manufacturer color science bias is not taken into account. You are not comparing CCD versus CMOS, you are comparing Olympus color science on a CCD versus Sony color science on a CMOS sensor. The better way to look at this would be to test the E-500 against something like the E-520 or E-620, using the same Olympus color profiles in both cameras, based on Olympus color science originating from the same product generation, using the same lens on both cameras. The takeaway here for me is that Sony color science is lacking - but that is common knowledge.

the test is inconclusive. using CCD doesn’t necessarily guarantee to more accurate/pleasing colors …it’s still down to the color science…much of the credit here goes to Kodak designing the sensor since they are an authority on color science…if they still design sensors they would be equally as good wthCMOS technology. also, Olympus has always had top notch color science and with CMOS sensor it will pretty much have it edging out the Sony…Sony colors IMO never that good out of the box until generation 4 of its A7 cameras. different cameras using the exact same sensor will yield different results with one being better than another …this is why for the same MF sensor Hasselblad yields better colors than Fuji. Lastly, it’s not clear to me how you set the white balance and you should have calibrated the sensors with Lightroom with a Color Checker card. if you did that the results between the two aren’t that far different.

I have done a lot of research and can say the "color theory" does not hold up in the hands of an experienced photographer using modern software. I was working on my own comparison video between a Nikon D200 and D300 (the closest CCD vs CMOS I can find) and can say WAY more color and vibrance comes from camera settings and photoshop tweeks than one would think. Infact in camera "vivid color" settings give the CMOS a color profile most people would prefer. On a side note neither truly look "film like" to my eye... but that is anothr complicated argumet on its own.

There is definitely seemingly unlimited control and possibilities when talking about editors and photoshop. I think "film-like" to me, means that the images (color-wise) already look "right" and don't need to be edited to look pleasing. I also realize that is not the common use for that term.

No normal person can make that video without being caught eating a prop. 4. I don't believe you filmed the intro until after you'd watched the video (scratches head). I could go on. Really interesting, though. I agreed 100% with your takes on the comparisons, despite being a little stunned by the extent of the differences. As to whether the comparison would somehow be more accurate if everything was shot through the same lens - both yes and no. Yes - use a Takumar or Zeiss on both then. No - real world relevancy is better represented where the images are shot using the rigs that people actually use. One day I'll try a similar experiment using the E300 and the K1... just not with the gummy-bears. Cheers.

@@ColtonMatocha Disappointing to hear that about the Kodak rainbows - yet another triumph of appearance over substance. That alt-test would be interesting - a 500 vs a 510, or something. I suppose part of the problem is separating out the physical sensor from the 'colour science' it's wrapped in - we already know how the exact same sensor in different manufacturer's cameras can yield very different results. Whatever, for me, colour fidelity straight out of camera seems important - I was shocked by the Sony rendition of a couple of those scenes.
