CCD Vs. CMOS: Sensor type? or Color Science?

This is a continuation of my video where I explored the differences between a Kodak CCD sensor and a Sony CMOS sensor. Now, we're exploring the difference within the same brand. In this comparison, I'll be using an Olympus E500 with it's Kodak CCD sensor, and an Olympus OM-D E-M10 III with it's CMOS sensor.
Will we see a difference? Or will the Olympus color science unify both cameras?

Finally, a survey photographer has appeared on the vastness of KZread, who not only compares the science of color of various forms of sensors not only at the levels of sensations. Once again I look forward to your review! It's amazing that there are so few subscribers. I single out for myself cameras with a "unique", unique color, as if continuing the film color line. I don't collect many of these cameras myself. probably, the main value is not in the accuracy of the transfer, namely, in the uniqueness. Moreover, color is such an individual characteristic of perception. although about accuracy - there are also obvious moments of blue hues, for example, in many modern cameras on cmos, blue often shifts to purple, although even on old cmos from canon, for example, this was not noticed. And, that's it, in ccd from Olympus, red shades come out voluminous (which appears from red to orange), which was typical for analog prints. I hope I conveyed the idea, English is not my native language)

Yes you did! I'm glad you enjoyed the review! It was fascinating to see the little details and differences between these two cameras! Color is such an important part of my work, and so I may have opened a pandora's box on this one. Now I'm thinking deeply on which camera has the right color science for my tastes! Camera brands give us a lot of specs, but color isn't one that's detailed as much.

Fantastic comparison, Colton, you put in a lot of effort! I prefer the results from the CMOS for this type of still life, definitely would be interesting to see the comparison in other shooting contexts. From what I have read on forums, somewhere in the switch from the 12 mp sensor of the EP2 to the 16 megapixel ones is when olympus did the tweak to their colour rendering. You may want to look up the 1020 rgb color profile for PEN-F, you can apply it in camera for the PEN F and EP-7 but all other OM-D cameras can apply it in post in olympus workspace as well. It really gets close to the old E-series look.

@@ColtonMatocha Further to that observation re the shift from the 12 to the 16... the difference between the 620 and the E5, both of which i use several times a week, is marked (to my eye, at least). I believe there's a difference in the AA, for starters. The difference is pronounced enough that, for a project i'm doing at night using the E5 (never mind why!), i shoot all my studies using the 620 (a convenient EDC), but the final image i shoot with the E5. So, same everythings, but the IQ on the 5 is superior. The point being - i wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if nothing was particularly settled (with Olympus) through that protracted period of evolution in the first decade or so of digital.

That is one of the reasons why many users applaud the JPG produced directly by the camera. In addition, Olympus models give you the ability to make adjustments so that the color adapts to your preferences. • @ColtonMatocha

    @ColtonMatocha

    2 ай бұрын

It would definitely be closer but the pixel density is not the same. The sensor in the 510 is 10mp as opposed to the 500 which is 8mp. However, I feel that the fact that the results are so close between the e500 and em10 iii is even more proof that the color science is the biggest factor. If the color stays fairly similar after all that time, technology changes, and even a completely different mount, then that feels like the ultimate answer.

Thanks for the revisit. Makes me realize this subject is ripe for videos. As one of the folks that suggested company choice made more difference. These are strikingly similar, even I expected more difference than this. But it does give relevance to peoples perception of fill in brand names look. I do wonder what ones would be considered more accurate? I have a feeling the most appealing to our eye isn't the most accurate and tuned to be that way. I have an m6ii and an a7rii. To my eye canon comes out warmer ( I know many say cold for canon) while the Sony appears cold and an almost gritty look. That's of course personal perception though. Another person pointed out that Sony made adjustments to their color science in the newer A7 iv and A7Rv. I'd certainly love to see what that change was! great comparison! I was going to suggest using the same lens on the first video before I noticed you made this second one. There are huge differences in color rendering using one camera with different lenses, I have especially noticed that when using old vintage lenses (even different variants of same lens, especially noticable with MIR and Helios Soviet lenses). Also camera sensors themselves are not everything, there is calibration on a processor side, sensor just gives you a signal that have to be interpreted. Also color filters over the pixels might be different, allowing for different wavelengths to hit the sensor, both of those can change over the year even for the same manufacturer.

@@ColtonMatocha I got a couple of favorites. The E-5 has the best build quality and ergonomics of any camera I have ever used. Everything about that camera feels right. The E-P5 is probably one of the most underrated cameras they ever made. Everything about that camera is premium - the design, the shutter (1/8000s mechanical, flash sync up to 1/320s). The white version they made is just a piece of art. The E-PM2 still is an amazing camera, the smallest Micro Four Thirds camera with IBIS and a touch screen. I guess my favorite Olympus camera is the Pen F - you would get a kick out of it as you can customize the color profiles for the RAW engine in camera to a degree that puts Fujifilm film recipes to shame. I amassed quite a few of the cameras listed above, I got two E-P5s (black model, white model), three E-PM2s, two Pen F (black model, silver model). There are still some good deals on Ebay every once in a while for the E-P5 and E-PM2 but they're getting rare. The Pen F already is a collector item with the used price creeping up to retail price. The best value camera to buy right now from Olympus is the original E-M1, I bought that when it came out, it displaced my E-5 out of my daily use rotation for a long time. I just ordered a full spectrum converted E-M1 as well, looking forward to doing IR photography with that soon.

Very nice video! I think your results were dead on for these two cameras. Let's face it - Olympus has been working on their color science for years, and one would think that improvements have been made. I would expect the first CMOS sensors were nowhere near as good as recent ones. As to the prior video, I do have a couple of thoughts. First, each lens, just as each sensor, has its own color cast. I've found significant differences between lenses from different manufacturers, even on the same camera. So, by sticking with Olympus, you've, again, helped minimize external differences. Second, I've always been a Canon shooter - I've never shot either Olympus or Sony, but there are a number of folks on the Canon forums who have moved over from Sony because they couldn't stand the colors - especially flesh tones. I'm not competent to judge this, but the color science difference between the companies is, as you found, more profound than the difference between sensors. I used to be a product photographer - I used a Canon EOS-1 DS mark ii in the studio for years. My experience was that the camera had real difficulty with accurate reds, but everything else was close enough. Reds tended to oversaturate. The end result was very pleasing most of the time, but not truly accurate, even after considerable tweaking in PS. I would also note that my different lighting setups tended to produce different color vibrance, which was odd since I was moving the lights, but not changing out lights. It was just something I had to compensate for. I don't do that type of work any more - I'm retired and just shooting art and for pleasure. All I can say is that my two new bodies, EOS-R and R7, render absolutely lovely colors - but I do often have to add just a little intensity to match the colors in my head.

Good day Mr. Colton. I thing that is not comparable. Because diferent systems. Small olympus lenses are not comparable with bigger lenses for apsc system. And diferent quality lenses can be too. Because is not possible to compare sharpness for ccd or cmos solution. CCDsensor has diferent electronic components. And CMOS senzor has little bit problem with creep light, because some electronic makes barier to creep light! Because it is dark blue ;) And what is about colour is different curves + contrast setting each camera. And little bit different ISO sensitivity senzor. CCD senzor creep lines to line on bottom. That is reason why gummy yelow bear is orange on red paper. CMOS senzor data creep every line to bottom line parael. Thats mean more acurrate colour for yelow gummy bear on red paper. Because data from one line to another line separetly reading are more acurate than ccd. (Senzor from CCD read colour data from several lines and put to one reader together) Otherwise CMOS read every line separate. That is reason why is not so contaminate. Much more difference between CCD or CMOS is important mathematic pixel. If camera make interpolate a) linear b) bicubic c) cvadrate . Very nice video for better undestanding slightly difference between ccd or cmos. But for real difference is foveon senzor. ;) Foveon senzor makes grass sharp. Not to mud like ccd or cmos whitch use bayer mask. Very nice is function pixel shift for 100 % colour. But only for very stabil object. It is more complicate than you think ;) And from this super video is possible see two or three diference. Good luck and playing.

The CCD won't necessarily be better than the CMOS. A lot of this is to do with the Colour Filter Array (CFA) that sits a top of the sensor. Try a D200...

@ColtonMatocha it's more complex. If you look at the first ccds in dslrs they had better stricter CFAs. What happened was as the want for high iso came about...it was weakened to let more light through. This meant colour separation was muddied and the like. Look for true colour Kings. D200 and d60 some of the best around. More ccds tended to have a good CFA thats why they got the colour rep.

I have an old D200 and switched over to Sony system some years ago. Still think the D200 pictures I made were more colorful right out of camera, but those were processed differently and these days my Sony images benefit from modern LR and Topaz NR. I am very curious though about using the D200 more to achieve the brighter colors right out of camera.

Cobalt Image they make camera profiles for everything. I think they said the CCD having better colors really is a myth but there is something about the older colors people like more. I think your samples the CCD has a little more contrast and the CMOS there is a little more dynamic range in the shadows but its really a close call they almost look 100% the same but I would say they are more like 99% the same. There was another CCD VS CMOS test video other KZreadr did and he's a Pentax shooter and the CCD image had a little darker red and if you just screen capped the jpegs off the KZread video and brought them into Lightroom I was able to get them to match 100%. So it really is just color science and I think people just like the more contrasty more of CCD but with CMOS you get more dynamic range so the shadows and blacks are more open with CMOS. Also there are color differences with different CMOS Olympus cameras. Camera companies are always playing around with color science. Its why when I shoot a wedding I have two of the same camera models. I've seen two Leica CCD vs CMOS videos and they are outdoor test and sometimes the colors are the same and sometimes the colors are different. It just depends on what the color is.

I totally agree! The color science for the specific camera/brand seems to make the most impact on the final result. I was very happy to see that this was a close comparison because I love the color I get with the Olympus E500 and now I know my Em10 iii is nearly the same! I think outside of color specifically, different sensors will have different contrast, exposure "evenness", and dynamic range which can also impact the perception of the colors but then can easily be adjusted in the edit. It was a fun little comparison to do and much better than my previous attempt 🤣 Thanks for watching and sharing some info with us!

it would be good to leave RAW files to download , YT has 8 bit color and those RAWs are at least 12bit , needless to say who knows what profile YT does for video , so there is no way to tell what we prefer when we did not see the image . I know this because im a color mad man and a family photographer so i share images , and i constantly look at images that i have sent to people on their devices and platforms , and there is massive difference , massive to us , they are used to Smartphone cameras and they dont care , but we do , im not a pixel counter , but i am in to color a lot , and that brought me to this video for the 2nd time , but as i say i didn't see anything , i use Samsung UD970 its a PLS panel calibrated in to 24 individual zones with true 10 bit color space , 100% Adobe RGB . Now that is massively better device to look at images , then YT videos , and given RAWs that would be possible , what i am looking at now , is your video capture codec , color space and stuff , then Adobe premier i guess , then export from it to another format , then uploaded to YT at 8 bit i think , and who knows what color space probably RGB . So you just can see it , and what wee see is not what was shot . Hence the need for RAW file , 2 of them some 80MB im sure there is space for it on G drive or something .

I think there's way more to it than the sensor types. Software hardware the age of the camera how they handle white balance etc.. I admire your effort but I think it's an impossible task. There are huge differences in the way cameras from model to model even with the same type of sensor handle color. Is there a difference in these type of sensors and how they affect the photos? Absolutely. The sensor type is only part of the equation.

lightroom gives poor colour quality, All images looks more yellow and there is a lack of magenta in the image. Like the image contains less colours, Less bitdepth, but it is good in the highlights, where is capture one is much better in colours, it is worse at highlights. I use Canon and when I don't have to calibrate the colours I prefer the canon software, because those colours look the best. When I shoot portrait or other subjects where the skintone do have to be right. I use capture one, because I can use that software with my calibration card. When I do that with lightroom some weird banding effects are happening. So I really dislike lightroom.
