🤓 What Ableton, Cubase & Logic can learn from Bitwig Studio: MPE expressions on all devices

Музыка

Expressions is probably one of my most used modulators. It works on any device, even VSTs, and gives you the ability to add movement to your sound while playing. In this video im using a ROLI light block to create some sounds.

Out of all the creative DAWs iv used and tried, bitwig 3 is the most focused on least hassle to get the sound in your head realised, and then assigning different parameters to my linnstrument is unparalleled. So happy I took the dive and upgraded from my 8 track version. This is what I was looking for ableton to become, too bad I didn’t know earlier that bitwig was here doing it better.

In all honesty, apart from time (Ableton released Live a while back), I think the main difference is that we don’t have enough people like Polarity demonstrating what can be done. Since Laura Escudé became Ableton Certified Trainer, there have been *many* people spending tremendous effort showing others what can be done in the (MPE-challenged) Ableton flagship DAW. There aren’t that many full courses about Bitwig on the main platforms and there aren’t that many people doing Bitwig-focused videos. I think Kadenze could help. And/or Groove3. And/or LinkedIn Learning (née Lynda.com). And/or AskAudio Academy. And/or Udemy/Coursera/edX… With time, we may get more people like Polarity doing those videos and course. Bitwig GmbH could improve the situation. And more patrons would certainly end up making a difference.

@@PolarityMusic Definitely the best software modulation-wise. But the only real drawback I have for now with Bitwig is that when I add a VST with a lot of latency, the modulations are started with some real delay! And this behavior comes when I use the "Plug-in Delay compensation" parameter in the "PLAY" menu and for example a good heavy Ozone Maximizer with the "IRC IV - Modern" setting, which gives the whole project a 114ms latency! So for example, when I make a dubstep wobble bass with an LFO modulator, the wobble will start too late and the rhythm is completely f*cked up! But fortunately, when I disable the "Plug-in delay compensation" in the menu, then the delay goes away! So the workaround that I found for now is to work on my whole project without delay compensation and before the final mixing and mastering stage, I freeze all my modulated tracks in WAV, then deactivate the midi tracks, so I can finish everything properly. Otherwise without the delay compensation, if I use a VST plugin with a latency and want to DRY/WET it, then there is some delay between the Dry and the Wet signal (this problem doesn't occur with native Bitwig plugins, of course because the don't introduce latency)! PS: I even tried to make manual delay compensation with Bitwig's "Time Shift" plugin, but it doesn't work as expected for the LFOs and other modulators, they keep starting off beat!

Another invaluable intro, esp. for us not-yet bitwiggers:) Thanks for all the really great videos! Simply having all modulator interfaces so directly visible next to and draggable to any device parameters is the main thing I'd wish to see other DAWs copy from BW. Routing such things can get really obscure in many of them (Logic!).

Very useful! Maybe even more than your average tutorial, which is already quite useful. Two reasons this is needed: a) People misunderstand MPE b) People don’t realize how deep Bitwig modulation works For MPE, some musickers might think that it‘s just the equivalent of using knobs and such. As you demonstrate around 6:40, the fact that it’s per-note makes the whole difference in the world. Yes, it’s like Polyphonic Aftertouch… and it’s in multiple dimensions, including pitchbend. Such a gamechanger! As for Bitwig modulation, the depth includes the fact that it also works per-note and per-voice. Sure, it’s neat to have some kind of LFO apply to any parameter in any synth. It’s much deeper when you can apply it to each voice for each note (with first-party modules as well as MPE ones). So, the title is accurate. Ableton Live is the one DAW which doesn’t deal with MPE in any way and requires a very “cumbersome kludge” (as Roger Linn calls it) to even emulate MPE. Cubase and Logic Pro X do support per-note effects, at least in some first-party synths. What they miss is this depth and broad workflow. In Bitwig, you really can apply MPE to anything and everything… without any special setup, on any internal device. In Logic Pro X, you can apply its equivalent of MPE to several synths, including Alchemy. But it’s difficult to set things up with all dimensions of polyphonic expression and it doesn’t do much to make MPE editing make sense. Once you’ve performed some expressive gestures in Bitwig, you can do so much with them! (Tracktion’s Waveform is somewhat similar in this respect but its synths aren’t MPE-compatible and it has nowhere the depth of modulation affordances that Bitwig has.) Really, really glad you’ve released this one. The one trick I keep learning from your videos is about how internal FX allow for modulation routing, which is something which kept puzzling me for a while. BTW, as points of feedback… To work as a full MPE synth (with expression working on a per-note basis) Zebra 2 and most other MPE third-party synths (like Pigments 2 and Serum) need to have the MPE button turned on. Same thing for Surge (my favourite MPE-compatible free synth), Equator, SynthMaster, Cypher2, Strobe2… There are some software-based MPE controllers… including Bitwig’s onscreen keyboard. It’s one of the reasons I occasionally use my touchscreen Lenovo instead of my MacBook Pro. Being able to control multiple things directly on the screen has had a big impact on how I perceive Bitwig. There are also some cool MPE controllers on iPadOS and they do MIDI out pretty well (especially easy on a Mac thanks to Inter-Device Audio & MIDI, but still usable on a Linux/Windows PC). Also, just in case the original ROLI Lightpad Block is the only MPE controller you’ve tried, I hope you can try the Lightpad M, as it’s wayyyyyyy more sensitive. Complete gamechanger, for me. Enough so that I only use my original Lightpad Blocks for sliders and such. The Lightpad M Blocks are what I use to actually play.

Interesting way to put it. Not sure how things happened, historically. Maybe Apple’s Pro Music team (the former Emagic) did work directly with ROLI and made it clear that Apple Retail should carry ROLI products… Maybe the story is a bit more layered, with some Apple (and Google) people on the MMA board on MPE… To be clear, Logic Pro X’s MPE support isn’t nearly as seamless as it could be and only applies to some instruments. Also, there isn’t much in LPX which has to do with ROLI-specific controls (unlike ROLI Studio). In practice, using MPE controllers with Logic isn’t a bad experience. Bitwig still does offer key advantages (especially if the controller has an appropriate Controller Script). The coolest piece of ROLI’s Apple Store presence, in some parts of the World, is that you can actually try those controllers before buying them. Plus they do training sessions, including some with material from RZA… As far as I can tell, it’s not possible to just try ROLI devices in Canadian Apple Stores, unless it’s one of these workshops. Bought the original Lightpad to try it, told explicitly by someone at the Store that it was a way to do my free trial. Never returned it, despite the temptation. The Lightpad M is when it became usable. Then ROLI “transitioned” to the non-MPE LUMI, because it’s apparently too difficult to learn to play the Seaboard or Lightpad. Talk about giving up…

where is the lift expression? and it is pity that seaboard blocks are bit strangely implemented, it works. i can use the seaboard block + lightpad M wit the lightpad M as rise controller, only when i make it a generic controller, the lightpad M. in a way it also a limit, that only all the blocks together all work on same expressions. o well there will be a workaround. owning bitwig studio 3.2 by the way (and other DAW's).

I have seaboard block and it doesn't work that well with bitwig tbh- I haven't tried it with bitwig's own instruments, but in equator 2 it's super glitchy. Note pressure is global so after the first note is pressed, subsequent notes played simultaneously all act like they are the same pressure as the first. Also glide (or timbre as described in this video) doesn't work at all. Not an issue with the Block though, as with roli studio open at the same time you can see all the interactions are being represented correctly (Equator 2 also works fine standalone). There are a lot of threads about this on Reddit and no solutions I can see

don't forget that release velocity isn't MPE specific, it is midi 1.0 spec. like note on, has a value of how hard you hit the key (when the keyboard responds to velocity, but nowadays that is standard, aftertouch not...), note off can also carry a value, of how hast you release a key. my novation sl 49 mk ii, sends this value. it is unclear how many keyboards have implemented this (it ain't that difficult..). NOTE ON and NOTE OFF are already polyphonic, of course. MPE is only X (glide/pitchbend), Y (pressure), Z (slide) and pressure is even already midi 1.x spec... but still me like MPE a lot (yes have 2 lightpad M blocks, and a seaboard block..). but still, release velocity, check it out if your keyboard can send the value of NOTE OFF, it seems not a big deal, release velocity, but it can add some great expression. so also for non-MPE keyboards available.
