The saxophonist probably doesn't realize that the intro phrase is already childish. Important notes are a half step off. There are too many such parts in this performance. That's what makes Satchmo's regacy a blasphemy. That's why Pat Metheny told him no.

@@hiroono1 The saxophonist was Kenny G. I thought he did a wonderful job with this tune! It is very difficult to reproduce a piece of music (with permission, of course), add to it, and get it right. Learning a tune like this, and playing it by ear on the piano, is a different thing, and ALMOST impossible, but I did it, after not seriously playing piano, since I was 10. The reason it's almost impossible, is that when you're listening to music on the stereo, when you hear it the notes change pitch ever so slightly, because of the shape of the ear drum. To try and mimic on the keyboard what you're hearing, you have to go up half an octave, before it "sounds right." The minute you do that, you end up having to play sharps and flats. My Father used to call this, "Playing in the cracks." There's that extra note in between each key, that nobody can seem to find . . . !

@@deirdrejohnson3468 You seem unable to hear chromatic intervals. The notes Kenny G plays do not contain important intervals. You do not have the ability to understand them.

Well, I would play along to this song too. Who wouldn't? It's a lovely track. I often play like that at home, when I feel like playing some good stuff. Kenny G sold his recorded play-along - good for him. No one forced anyone to buy it. Kenny G is an OK musician and an OK artist.

To all the haters: I don't follow jazz. I don't have the experience that might dictate being angry over how Kenny G covers this song. I just know that I've been playing the saxophone (alto) long enough to respect the clarity and smoothness of the tone. On top of that, I simply think that it sounds very nice. Unfortunately, Mr. Armstrong isn't here to settle the matter, but I hope that he would think better of this than you all supposedly do in memory of him. What a wonderful world, indeed.

You can't? How about putting the original Satchmo song in the Good Morning Vietnam movie without Armstrong's permission? Over a million Vietnamese died and maybe 50,000 Americans died with thousands still suffering the effects today. Was it a wonderful war? I think including the song in the movie ridicules Mister Armstrong because it makes him seem like a simpleton

I just found this. (2024?) This was one of the tunes that brought me back to the piano, after not touching one, since I was 12. I'd put this on the stereo, and ATTEMPT to try and play it, but I found I was using a lot of the black keys! I persevered until I got it "right," (in my mind), and then my Father--who was an accomplished musician himself--came home from work one evening, heard the piano (and the stereo), stood behind me until I was done playing. It took a second or two, and then he said: "That, is the most difficult piece to learn how to play!" ("Sentimental Journey," is another one that's difficult to copy from stereo to piano). "How long have you been doing that?!!!" I said: "A week." No sheet music--just playing by ear. After that, my Father dug out all of the sheet music he'd put away, thinking he'd never play it again. (40's music). I was "challenged" daily, after that . . .

As Pat Metheny said: "But when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible. He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths, shit all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an amazing lifetime as a musician. By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about - and afraid of."
