    Fun fact: this car has been launched in 2006, after almost 18 years of production refuses to die, is sold in Europe under 4 brands simultaneously, with another firth to be introduced. You'll never guess who joined the party after two decades... So, the most ridiculous thing about this car is the fact that on November 2023 TOYOTA has launched its own badge-engineered version solely for European market. Toyota Proace Max, a Japanese-badged car with interior designed by Italians in the mid 2000's era in Fiat Grande Punto era, is probably the most quirky badge engineering in Europe in the latest decade.

    I used to own a van upfitting business and can speak to the use case of the rear seats (would also like to point out that Merc has actually offered a Crew Seat config since 2012, as well as a full passenger van). Before the camper van craze, crew seat vans were almost exclusively purchased by contractors who only wanted to have one vehicle that they could drive to work in, and occasionally drive their family around in (or an extra crew member or two once in a blue moon). Around 2016, they started to get snatched up by families who wanted a camper/haul van with OEM seats that have been crash tested and safety verified (aftermarket seats are a huge unknown in regards to safety). The most common van upfit we would see was for moto families. Sprinter 170 4x4 Crew van with a light upfit package including walls, insulation, wiring, flooring, and L-track in the floor to transport 3-4 motos to the track and back. As far as which van is "best" among the three kings (Merc, Ford, Ram), I would rate Merc/Ford as a near tie (depending on what you're looking for) with the Ram an incredibly distant third. The Rams have transmission issues, electrical issues, horrible ground clearance, no ability to run bigger tires, horrible seats and tech packages, and bad resale value. Great for contractors and delivery drivers, bad for everyone else.

  • @DMSparky

    @DMSparky

    That’s okay contractors and delivery drivers are what this category of vehicles is designed for. I hope to god the day never comes that the companies start prioritizing instagramers over real businesses. I’m sure you know this but upfitted vans are trash off-road they are too heavy, no lockers, with tires that are too small and terrible AWD systems that flip out if they direct any slip. In my experience as a contractor they do work well in normal ice and snow. Unless it’s a Quigley or similarly modified van it’s not really going to do well off road.

    since this isn't actually a pro master, what is your opinion of it since it's a FIAT Ducato?

  • @gad63511

    @gad63511

    6 ай бұрын

    Yea but the ram also has a couple upsides. That horrible ground clearance means it's easier to get into and out of (lower floor), and also that the roof is lower which improves fuel mileage and obstacle clearance. The van is also easier to upfit because the body is not tapered. And it's easier to hang stuff underneath because of no driveshaft. In terms of reliability ,every car has it's issues. In my circles, the promaster is generally seen as easier to keep running because of cheap parts and no turbo.

    we have a Fiat Ducato campervan and it’s pretty good. Granted it’s a manual with the proven Diesel engine and these things can take a beating. The interior is the biggest drawback since Merc/Ford have way more modern and ergonomic interiors. It is definitely the most rustic and drives like a utility vehicle compared to some counterparts. But the Fiat Ducato has proven itself over two decades, it’s badge engineered by like 5 companies and even Toyota now.

    Former amazon driver here, our fleet was full of these things and they are slowly being phased out woth the Rivian vans. These things are workaholics, the features are basic but the huge cargo space and super tight turning circle make it a suburban street sweeper. Living in once of these things 10 hours a day really makes you appreciate the HVAC that works really well and all of that window area. If I ever need a big van like this, these are at the top of my list.

    More van reviews!!!! Would love to see a comparison between Express/Savana, Transit, Sprinter, and these Promaster vans (or just individual reviews). The GM vans are especially interesting because they've been made (largely unchanged) the same way since 1996! Surprised you guys didn't mention the Dajiban for this review as those are the race drifting Ram Vans from Japan! (which would look super sick on Cliche Corner).

  • @steeltimberwolf

    Great to see this kind of review. I drive the 2017 model of this van as a medical transporter. It's uplifted with a rear wheelchair lift, and floor pan to secure wheelchairs in place along with seats for patients without mobility issues. This van rocks in the winter, the front wheel drive pulls through the snow during the winter and I've never be unable to get my patients where they need to be. The V6 is surprisingly strong but I can say that gas mileage isn't its strong suit but that might be because the uplift for the wheelchair lift and floor is probably a couple 1000 lbs plus the 40 lbs removable passenger seats and other equipment. For me compared to the Ford Transit uplift van we also have I enjoy driving the Ram more.

    My dad bought one of these last year (he's bored in retirement) from a dealership in Colorado Springs that outfits them for "van life" - it has a small kitchen, bed, cabinets, headliner, etc. It isn't huge looking from the outside but on the inside it is enormous. I really love it, it has decent power and is quiet on the road. The only thing I dislike is that the seats are horribly uncomfortable over long distances.

    I once had a camper build out on a standard roof Econoline -I liked the squareness for the build stage, but not the terrible fuel mileage of the 351 V-8. One of these looks like the ideal basis for an awesome family toy hauler. Back in the '60's when I raced motorcycles our family came to the races - 2 parents, 2 kids, and 2 motorcycles in a utility trailer.... This is an ideal rig for families that also need to haul. 4 Stars!

    Race teams. That's a brilliant use case. 4 or 5 team members with spare parts and toolkits in the back. Also: painters, plumbers, electricians...basically any tradie. You don't need stupid amounts of ground clearance or a pickup, just a lot of space for both people and things. Another fun fact: the heavy duty suspension is actually pretty high-end. "The four-wheel independent performance suspension consists of: a front short/long arm with high upper "A" arm, lateral and diagonal lower links, coil spring over gas-charged shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar; a five-link rear with coil springs, gas-charged shock absorbers, isolated suspension cradle and stabilizer bar."

    About overlanding: french company Dangel does 4x4 transmission with diff locks for PSA Group and some campervan builders (i.e Westfalia, Bunkervan and such) has a 4x4 model of this.

    🤠 I have a Travato. I love it. The Promaster chassis makes a great camper van. It is supprising how quick the Travato's are even after the Winnebego upfitting. Total weight is just under 10,000 lbs. 🤠

    I have photos of my Transit Quigley lapping Streets of Willow with an insane amount of sidewall flex on the AT tires. Despite trying to turn off stability control it never fully went away, and when it decided to intervene on track, it did so in a decidedly unsafe manner. Think first time driver stabbing at the brake of one corner full force; I thought it was going to roll the van! That was certainly a different sort of adventure than what I bought the van for...

    Love the excitement. My Ram Promaster 1500 136” HR has been my home for over 6 years. I am SO GLAD they’ve upgraded the front end - b/c it has been the ugly duckling for its whole existence in the US. Love that you reviewed it - there’s so little actual reviews of vans. You should try it off road, it does surprisingly well with short overhangs and good break over. I’ve taken mine places I probably shouldn’t have and it’s done it and hasn’t broken down. #vanlifeislife

    I’ve driven one for work, that was the vehicle they assigned me and it was a 2022 though, so it had the older body style with new interior, but it was surprisingly quick for what it is, it had no problem reaching 80mph.

    You should do a review of the Explorer or Waldoch conversion of this van, basically turning it into a limo, for less money than the Winnebago. The Winnebago is a camper conversion, which is fine, but the Explorer and Waldoch conversions are a bit more usable as a daily driver for the family.

    If you go to Europe and see the smaller motorbike racing teams these are the go to vehicles. They sleep in these things over the weekend. Then put the bike in them to take the bike back to the shop.

    I work as a forklift tech, and I have to say I love the cargo space. But that’s where the love ends. The window pillars block a clear view of your mirrors, no basic tilt wheel, the driver partition location (this may be more the fault of the upfitter) doesn’t allow for any kind of reclining whatsoever. The seats sit super high, so it feels like you’re about to tip over if you do any cornering at speed. The only benefit to it being FWD is the added space due to the lower floor due to not having a driveshaft running the length of the van. I have to say the turn radius is phenomenal. Coming from a Nissan NV3500 / Ford Transit, I’ve got to say it’s got the best turning radius I’ve ever experienced on a van. The worst complaint I have is the weird placement of the cup holders. They’re so far down, and covered by the “phone holder.”
