This is a great example of a successful devlog series done right. The videos are extremely engaging and the long development time helped him gather wishlists which when combined with the interesting concept and visuals made the game a huge success.

@@CodeMonkeyUnity He just mentions in his Devblog he was hoping for 10K sales in 1 Year but already is nearing that number now, with 463 reviews currently that means the multiplier is pretty close to that 20 multiplier.
So awesome to see Ponty’s success story. The courage to quit a high paying job in order to pursue a dream and to come out on top is wonderful to see. Thank you for highlighting his success, CM!

I really enjoy the blogs and I am happy for his achievement. But I’m honestly a bit disappointed about the financial reward. 100.000 dollar is not a lot of money for 3 years of full time software development. :(
The guy worked 3 years no salary, it’s kinda fair that he does $100,000 in 2 weeks considering all the efforts of being 1 guy developing a game and a KZread channel, well deserve 🎉

Yeah, that number also used the $15 price tag, but it launched on sale for $10 and Pontypants himself essentially told his audience he recommends waiting for a $10 sale to buy it. (he referenced some other youtube guide that recommended pricing your game higher and putting it on sale for the "real" price). So, it was probably even lower than $100k. Hopefully it continues to sell and do well though; he seems like a neat and creative guy, so I'd love to see what he does next.

Nice! I've been following Pontypants since he had 1.4k followers. It was a blast watching him progress all along and grow his fanbase. I have not finished Punch A Bunch, it's way too hard for me, but I had so much fun playing it. His devlogs are very well edited, they always are a treat to watch. I hope he is happy with his success.

Just the same as you who is maybe employed where you are passionate its not always about earning money hope you are doing well in your life every person soughts a different activity .

I also followed this guy. He is easy to relate to, because he also makes games *because he likes to do it* not to make money. He spend almost 3 years, he could easily have released it after 2, but he is not a publisher, he is like you and me, a game dev with a passion. I am happy his game turned out good - it often does when you put heart and soul into it.
I could definitely learn a lot from his videos. Can't wait to get back into making dev logs again.

I watched all of them since the start, very good series.
Great video! Been following a bunch of devlogs and gotta say it's pretty easy to underestimate the amount of work one needs to put in on a project... I don't think most indie devs plan on spending 2-3 years on a project, and especially not full-time 😅

Hehe yup, pretty much all these devlogs from first time game devs all end up going way over the original development time.
I do enjoy the tutorials! It helps me get my head around the "coding" part. I'm just at the beginning of this journey, so I do strive to get better and take programming well into the future.
Been following ponty from his early days also, he is very entertaining, and I am glad he is finally getting a nice return on his time and efforts 👍👏👏

I would say his channel is definitely a huge part of it. I don't like fighting games but I bought it and left a 5 star review just as a way of saying thank you for all the entertainment he has given me. I tried it out not really my cup of tea, only reach the second bad guy before putting it aside

Fantastic work for this game and it's great seeing Code Monkey cover these types of wins for the game dev community! I worked on a game for 2 years and had maybe a quarter of those reviews. I did very little marketing and playtesting so in the end that really shows. My goal over that time was to release a free game on steam which I did and that there is what I call success.
I watched ponty's devlogs from the start and I'm happy to see him finding success in his first game good for him
Wow respec! Damn... I had to take a break from making my devlogs because Uni is taking up all of my spare time, but soon I will continue! This really inspired me to get back to my project and release it! Respect to all indie game devs, releasing your own game from scratch is a LOT of work!

I think the best way to reach an audience for an indie game is doing things like devlogs, it not only attracts a fanbase to your games but its putting your game out there even if its starting as an idea.

Yes, you can help other developer and support their devlog, it's very helpful. I always tag "teacher" of other developer who make tutorial for help my project and make them happy to make other video.
Shows that hard work and dedication does pay off.

the problem with calculating Revenue like that is often that it doesnt calculate in regional sale prices, which might be way lower

Yes this is just a rough estimate, but you can be pretty confident the real number isn't going to be $20k or $2mil, maybe it's $150k or maybe $250k
Well your tutorial strategy worked for me. I watched a lot of your videos and came to the conclusion you know your stuff so bought multiple of your udemy courses. These youtube videos are like free demos for the full course.

I find quite crazy how review ratios vary. My latest game has 15 reviews (half of my first one) and +800 copies sold (twice the first one)

Those estimates are only semi accurate once you have a decent number of reviews (100+) below that the multiplier doesn't really work

His game and devlogs were so cool.
I'm so proud his game was received that well. Seeing what he was willing to give up in the pursuit of his goal let me know how serious he was about his game. That's what made me want to follow his journey. He's an excellent example of hard work and believing in yourself paying off.

Combining marketing publishing high-quality (!) educational materials is HUGE! I hope that it will affect your game sales in a very positive way. Personally I will participate in that as well.
"Buy a lambo anytime soon." I chuckled when you said this. It's so true though. Makes me laugh when people suddenly get money and they spend it on nonsnse like fancy cars, jewelry, and flashy clothes. The last thing he should be doing is buying things that instantly lose value as soon as he takes ownership of it (like consumer goods, flashy cars, jewelery) and things that have high maintance / ownershp costs. (like a 1 million dollar lottery winner who buys a million dollar house and now can't afford the taxes, upkeep or operational costs)

Heh yup, my story would have been very different if instead of saving the money from my first Steam game I had spent it on a nice car. If so I probably would have gone bankrupt when my second game flopped hard.
All successful stories encourage me to work and work! I will be lord of my success or my hunger, but definitely my lord

2:49 i had been making estimations for year about how many copies could have sold a game based of steam reviews, normally if you take the review number multiply it by 50 can be very precise about how many copies were sold

That's one way to look at it, another way is he would have sold 1/100th the copies without Steam showing it to all those people. Personally I have tried selling games direct on my website and on Steam, based on the results I got I am more than happy to pay the Steam percentage to get access to their audience.

While I think the estimate is interesting, you ignored regional pricing in your calculations - the game is $15 or more in only 8 out of the 41 countries. So it's probably even less than that

You can have somewhat a good life for like 5 years in Turkey with 100k USD. These really encourage people to make great games.

Yup, one thing that really helped me become a indie game dev is simply the fact that here in Portugal an amount like that can also last for many years. Definitely makes it easier to find success than if I lived somewhere expensive like the US

At the very very least something like 100k copies, so at a minimum $1mil, possibly $5mil. Obviously dependent on the game actually being good which by looking at the trailers so far it definitely looks good. Bigger question is will Dani be able to finish it, the last time he spoke about it he seemed to be really feeling the pressure from so many people wanting the game.

Highly depends on the publisher and the contract. Sometimes they help, sometimes they do nothing and have horrible contract terms.

I am new to Unity, going through training materials now and running into an issue with scripts. I have a new project with a simple C# script (prints the word Test to the console). When I try to run it (clicking the Play button at the top of the screen) nothing happens. My screen changes color so Unity is in Play mode, but nothing appears in the console window. No errors or anything

I believe when you dont just think about the money you can be successful, you need that passion and love for the work
Me and my friend are making a game- but haven't started marketing yet. We can't really afford to make a steam page for it, and also can't make devlogs. How can we gather people to buy the game without a steam page or youtube devlogs?

@@BeardBarians Not sure if itch has wishlists, that's more of a Steam thing. But if you're at the point where you can't afford the Steam fee then it sounds like you're at the very beginning. At that point don't worry about trying to make money, instead focus on learning and improving your skills.

He had savings from a previous job and then intentionally moved to a place with a lower cost of living to be able to work on the game, and I do believe he had no game dev knowledge before hand. So yes he is 100% the definition of the word indie. You don't have to be starving and homeless to be considered indie.

Keep in mind that those 100k isn't all the money he made for those 3 years of development time. He made enough money through his youtube channel to live nicely for those 3 years, so he got about 100k on top of that.
I don't know why every time I feel like I've wasted a lot of time with unity instead of unreal.

Engines are just tools, every engine is capable of building any game you can image, don't get caught up in the "engine wars" just pick one and learn
The extrapolation of all numbers involved is kind of nonsense though... Wishlists are a good thing, yes. However I know from my own wishlist I've got like a 100 there I wouldn't buy unless a deep sale. And there are what? Like thousands of games on Steam that compete _with_ a discounted price? In other words, those wishlists do not directly translate to healthy sales at all. And it only helps visibility of the game in quite minor ways. Especially when you realize this game also has 84 negative reviews. Those are of course conveniently ignored, when depending on what they say, could actually greatly affect sales (think 'doesn't run on Windows 11' or 'crashes a lot' or whatever similar stuff. Mind you, these are examples, not saying they apply here). Same goes for amount of reviews. To suggest a game is a success after what the guy gave up on and went through, is most definitely overstating how well this turned out. That's not just time invested, but also money. And most games like this only sell decent numbers the literal first two to four weeks, after which it can flatline completely. And no, this game didn't sell $200k in two weeks. 450 reviews doesn't get you those kinds of sales for sure. Not to mention how it's probably not making a profit at $100k net revenue. And how many reviewers got the game for free anyway? Contrary to what people assume, people do not look at the number of reviews, but they read through a few to see if the game is any good. Content of the reviews matters more than the amount. Meme reviews usually get ignored, as are reviews that say nothing but 'It's a good game'. Heck, I dare say those 84 negative reviews are more important in how they potentially affect sales. To call this game a great success now is just weird. Let's just hope it nets enough money for the guy to make another game and keep going.

What? You thought a KZread devlog video made $200k? I must say I never imagined how anyone could possibly interpret the title that way considering how badly KZread pays. His most successful devlog episodes probably made $500. I thought it was common knowledge that free videos make almost no money? To make $200k from a KZread video you would need 100 million views, did you think there was a devlog with that many views? It was definitely not my intention to clickbait anything, the game behind the devlog made $200k, it's obvious to me that it wasn't the devlog video.

@@CodeMonkeyUnity Interesting YOUR saying something you do regularly for work, is obvious to you, and SHOULD be obvious to everyone else. THAT is SOOO weird. IF only the world worked liked that. Imagine the free knowledge and information that would travel if you didn't have to do a job to KNOW instantly what it made, how it worked and GOSH you'd be out of a KZread programming tutorial job.

@@micaiahstevens8840 I get what you're saying but I genuinely thought that nowadays pretty much anyone knows just how little a KZread view pays. My own videos make about $20-$40 with 10k-15k views. If the title said $2k I could see the confusion, I can see how someone might think a KZread video could generate $2k. But $200k is so far off that how you read the title didn't ever cross my mind. It's like as if a video said "Lifting a 1 ton box" and you thought it was clickbait that the video was using a forklift to lift it instead of a human grabbing it.

@@CodeMonkeyUnity TLDR; Subject is NOT part of the title. No; it would be like the Video says this 'Human can lift a one-ton box' and he gets in the forklift and does it in the video. BUT honestly, I would not be surprised to find a human lifting a box with those mechanical assist robots, and it's not out of the realm of possibility. The subject is not part of the title. I think you claim to know a LOT about youtube but somehow miss the clickbait titles. Click bait is a catchy title to get you to watch the video, if it was titled properly 'Forklift lifts a one-ton box'. I would go GEE that would be fun to watch, but not today. ANOTHER video title was Double CHIP event, but as soon as I watched it, I realized it was only for that game server, and said NAH. To be FAIR and HONEST, I was thinking that was the case somehow that a devlog made 200k, and was dreading watching the video. I watched it and thought you KNOW that is exactly why I wanted to make dev logs to drum up interest. I honestly think your trolling me, as you probably spend part of your day, even a small part THINKING of click baity titles. OR catchy titles, or marketable titles. YOUR in a business and TRYING to make money after all. Call it what you will. "Devlog leads to 200k in game Sales." I can be hired for CHEAP! NOW that is a video I WOULD want to watch.

@@micaiahstevens8840 I'm not a KZreadr, but I'm an aspiring indie game dev. And as such, I know exactly what the title means. A devlog is a means to an end; used to share your game dev journey in order to gather a following for the game. If a devlog leads to $200k, it's because it gathered a following that bought the game for a $200k total. It makes perfect sense to everyone except you apparently. You're being a bit obnoxious and rude, and I'm surprised Code Monkey bothered to reply to you as many times as he did.
Should be glad if he can buy a lambo and have a better life after all those years pursuiting passion. Or else, no one gonna make indie games again.
It's crazy how much taxes, steam etc. cut off of your salary, more than half, complete rip off
Where does the "Fighting games are niche" come from? Fighting games like this are a niche but the genre is really not. I think people see how Tekken and Street Fighter fell off and thats why they say it. But that is all due to them adding insane money making tactics like for SF adding ADS LIKE IN A MOBILE GAME TO DOUBLE YOUR REWARDS. Or Tekken PUTTING FRAME DATA AS A DLC HELOOO????!?!? Look at Rivals of Either it is pixelated, indie, old(8 years), $25, 2d platform fighter, insanely hard, exclusive to PC AND TO THIS DAY they have colabs, updates, tournaments. By every metric that game was doomed to fail from the start and it just flourished. Glad this game doesnt have anything resembling AAA fighting games.

It comes from the stats themselves, nothing to do with those AAA titles, if you browse the Steam fighting tag look at how few games get even 100 reviews store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Released_DESC&ignore_preferences=1&tags=1743&category1=998&os=win&supportedlang=english&ndl=1 Compare that with something like Strategy or Action and you will see a huge difference. Obviously this is talking about Steam/PC, on Consoles fighting games are indeed not as niche.

@@CodeMonkeyUnity You have to click on it to see the reviews recent reviews do not count when you hover over it. I organized it by user reviews the minimum in the first 50 is around 300 and the maximum gos to tens of thousands+. If we sort it by relevance 90% are actually fighting games and not "fighting" in a 2d pixel single player RPG game sense. They all have 10s of thousands of reviews to hundreds of thousands. We have Naruto, Dragon Ball, WWE etc. but aside from them we have Melty Blood that has 5 developers no one ever heard of that is priced at 50 euros and has 6400 reviews. Idk what a niche is to be honest. How small does it need to be. Also RTS does not exist on console or mobile so obviously they will have far more because their player base is never divided. Other strategies are scarce on consoles as is.
so successfull that you don't hear from him since september 2023 :-/ no devlogs since the release. nothing on youtube. nothing on twitter. he is just gone.

last game update on steam, March 3rd, ... this is not motivating for any upcoming gamedev. same is with DANI. he is just gone. burnout syndrom or what. nobody knows.

He made a ton of money with the game so if I had to guess I would say he's enjoying a nice deserved vacation. Although it's probably not enough money to retire so I expect he will be back within 1-2 years. Dani has probably made enough to retire, so not sure if/when he will be back
I really don't get it, the visuals are awful. It's one of the most unappealing things I've ever seen, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills

In the Metroidvania genre, one of my games earns one wish list every three days. In six months, 111 wish lists have been earned. ))) What a success ! HAHAHAHAHAHAH ! I don't know why, but it's funny to me.
