Ever since subscribing to your channel you’ve been motivating me to dig out my old gear and maybe delve into performing live. I’ve only ever made music for myself.

Really beautiful message and video! A few years ago I had the chance to start over, which without getting too personal has definitely meant getting to become the person I wanted to be both when I was younger and a few years ago. It doesn't have to take something tragic like it was for me, or a new decade, any time is the right time to start down that path. Having trust in yourself is a big part of that. And that is an absolutely beautiful sunset, reminds me of back where I grew up in Long Beach (NY).

Thanks for the pep talk near the end of the video. I have not played a live dance set since 2005 and I have been second guessing myself if I still have it in me to do again. I feel more confident now after watching this clip.

Thanks for the encouragement! I know i can play a show, but just need to piece it together! I hate getting caught up in gear, but I am finding which pieces i'd like to gig with. I definitely need a dedicated synth. That's the main thing i'm struggling to pick right now! I want to play some keys live! Argon8? Korg minilogue? Hydra? Bassstation? Too many good ones out right now!

In a way, a lot of your tips in this video totally relate to one of your recent videos (as of October/November 2021, that is) … well, at least I see and feel the relation. Becoming familiar with a piece of gear or a software is so enabling, in the way that doesn’t get carried away by thinking about what to do. Instead, one can just do it and bringing the idea to life. So for some (like me, I realise), limiting the arsenal of gear and software purposely may help in becoming actually familiar with the tools at hand. For what reason ever, you made me realise this - and now it is up to me to work it out. Literally, Thanks for that, Ricky! Apart from that, you raised the question or something like that about the difference between being/becoming familiar with a piece of gear (or any other tool) and being/becoming comfortable with it. While there sure are some very smart (and official) explanations on that out there, my first thoughts and feelings were: 'familiar like enabling', ‘comfortable like beaten path'. It sure hasn’t be that extreme (or bad), but as always, and that is my idea and experience, too comfortable may lead to denying new ways, sort of - while too familiar, at least when talking about gear, software or tools in general, may not turn out this limiting as far new ideas, concepts and experiments are concerned. Well, at least that is ho I feel about it at the moment. Again: thank you so much, Ricky, for sharing it all!

Really good tips. Stripping back the gear to one or two pieces is helping me.

I use a Brother PT-H110 handheld printer for all my cables & gear, it’s under $40 and worthwhile. I have a similar amount of gear as you, synths etc running into audio & MIDI patch bays, it’s a nightmare without labels. Black text on white labels are visible on a dark stage and leaves no residue.

I'm new to modular synths, and all that, but past week or two I've had this philosophy developing to look at a synth / sampler / sequencer / etc. -setup like an acoustic drum kit: - Similar "modular" setup, collection of different parts. - Setting up physically for ergonomic reasons - Skill needed to play it balanced. For electronic musician that might mean adjusting levels and EQ in mixer, and the ability to listen to what you are doing so you don't run in to problems where f.ex. a bass synth is overpowering everything. I could go on an on about the similarities. Electronic musicians are kind of a special type. Our setups can be very unique compared to what someone else has. But that doesn't remove the fact that we can develop a type of virtuosity that allows us to comfortably perform with the modular or non-modular setup. Skill set is just action-wise wildly different from a drummer, or a guitar player. We need to get comfortable at different things. Adjusting mixer, patching modular, handling sequencer(s), live sampling, live loop recording (audio and midi). For a drummer or guitar player, the virtuosity is in the micromotoric control of hands and feet.

Great points, and these are also on point even, if one would not play live sets at all.

The labeling tip is so key! Label your wires as well as your equipment. It makes setup go faster and when you are packing up if you keep a checklist it will prevent you from losing wires at gigs as well.

Speaking of live, I heard you were going to perform last night at Perfect Circuit, and I was looking forward to it while I was in town (along with performances by Vlad and others), but it must have been a rumor. I'll catch it sometime. :-)

I re-added my Behringer D and Keystep on a shelf over my suitcase (Deluge, Mother 32, mixer, Boss DD7 and Eventide H9). Played with it for a couple of hours, amazing, but worried me with so much synth going on. Removed the Boog/Keystep and played and oh wow there's my sound, simpler and more creative as each instrument has space.

I keep coming back to the circuit. One day they’ll release a new version with new synth engines, more samples, and randomization like in the elektron products. It has held up really well these years and only needs a few things for a golden new product.

Currently assembling my first set of gear for performing live (based on korg volcas) but not really happy with the final sound -- doesn't sound deep enough without compression to me. So curious, do you use any compression on master when performing? Your videos always sound great.

Getting to know one piece of Gear or a single instrument is not still water, there is always depths to Explore and the more dedicated to a single piece, the more you can get out of it. You are a real inspiration. But please make music for yourself maybe not first but on the same level as your audiencie, amaze and surprise them even if they only wanted to party.

Dope as ever! Any update on the sample pack?

Beginner looking for some advice... So i've been dj'ing for prob 10 years, originally using 1210's but for the past 3 years i've been using a Traktor controller and i recently bought a TR-8S just as an addition to dj'ing and messing around on, however this has lead me to want to get into production and potentially live dawless sets. I've got some compensation money coming in from an accident i had at work so i'm going to use the money to buy a dawless studio, i want to make gritty, banging techno, stuff like Fixon, A.Paul, Setaoc Mass, P.E.A.R.L.etc etc. So i've decided on getting the following through some research: Novation Bass Station II , Elektron Analog 4 MkII, Digitakt, Digitone, Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 + Tr-8S i already have + a mixer not decided on yet. I'm really torn/confused no matter how many video's i watch whether to get Digitakt & Digitone or Rytm MkII + Octatrack MkII as an addition to Analog 4 MkII. Perhaps there's some other additions or pieces that would be better suited for the sound i want or better combinations. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ive been using 3 Circuits has my sequencing/drum machines for live. Now I think the launchpad Pro 3 is my new sequencer core. I also had the same issue with low frequency samples being way to bass heavy causing a muddy meldown, live and learn. Also stereo samples are pointless , In 90% of venues there setups are in mono. Nobody will be able to tell anyways.

Herrera idea if you have limited space on stage You should use a laptop stand for your octa track It will up out of the way,, you can still.use it coz its right in front you and you have e greatly reduced foot print Yeh flawless awsome👍👍

Hey Ricky check out the new Tascam Model 12 mixer/recorder. So far the most promising multitrack recorder for DAWless music I've seen. Overdubbing, effects, and even with midi sync.

Which is why I have used only a Korg Electribe ESX & EMX for my live setup for over 10 years. They are processed through Reaper DAW which is controlled with the Novation LaunchControlXL. Fits all in one box, easy to transport & set up. I have tried to find a replacement for the Korg but so far nothing comes close. Still waiting...

Hey, thanks for your thoughts! It’s exactly the same point where I am also now. A few shows played in a kind of free environment and going for one in a Club between Dj Sets in february. A 5. point might be practicing. Sure you did that also a lot , because to know where everything is leads also to this. And what it killed for me also a few times was a not good monitoring when playing live. Do you use InEars or how do you do it?
