Luffy did what Shanks did to the mountain bandits back at his hometown (he did not fight back). Luffy did not fight back because Luffy has no reason to do so, because, Bellamy and his gang not having a dream of their own or given up believing in dreams; in addition, Luffy and Zoro did not fight back because Bellamy is not hurting Luffy’s friends.

To Luffy, someone like Bellamy who has no dreams, who lives life day to day without a goal is already a defeated individual and is not worth fighting. You could see it in his eyes that he felt pity for the guy. To him, a person without conviction or worst, courage to pursue said conviction is as good as a robot. Soulless. That and Bellamy didn't hurt anyone he cared about either so "whatever". That's how I interpreted it but it took me a while to get there tbh, I was annoyed the first time i watched it.

I bet even Chopper could destroy Bellami's crew.

People like to say Luffy did the same thing as Shanks, but he did not. This is much deeper than that. First of all Luffy was ready to throw hands at first. That's completely different from the Shanks scene. He decided to not fight only after Bellamy started mocking dreams. The best way I can explain this scene is by comparing it to real life. Imagine you got a friend who randomly yells "I'm gonna be President of the USA" in a public place. Who's gonna take him seriously? People would shrug it off or laugh at that. Heck, even you would. And some nasty people would probably come to his face and mock him. What can he do against them? Punch and kick them? Is that gonna prove anything? The only way your friend can win is by ignoring their mockery and actually achieve that goal. Otherwise, it's their win. And some people might ask, then why are Luffy and Zoro just taking the beating rather than running away? Repeat that sentence. Luffy and Zoro, running away from Bellamy. They are way too prideful to run away from some bully. So they stood until Nami had to drag them out. This is honestly one of my favourite scene because Oda never spells it out for us. Most people miss the message and say that Luffy is just imitating Shanks. Which is again wrong, because he was about to throw hands at first. It's a lot easier to understand when compared to real life.

@@AccordingtoLucky Nah it could have been way worse. They could have beaten Nami too or take her against her will. The insult towards her was relatively weak. But it's not wrong if you think otherwise. I said the "message", but Oda doesn't preach to us. That's the point of Nami in this scene. She never understand the point of their inaction. And most people relate to her during this scene more than Luffy and Zoro. After all, we're not all big dreamers.

One thing that a lot of people also miss is that it wasn't just Bellamy and his crew in the bar. Most of them were just randos, and they all laughed too. There'd be no end if you beat up anyone who simply laugh or disrespect you. Fun fact, you will meet a character who'd do just that. He isn't portrayed as evil, but fans clearly don't respect him as much as they respect Luffy.

Hi According to Lucky Greetings from Germany, Luffy did not fight because, Bellamy wasn't in his way to become the PirateKing(Summit) and no Nakama was hurt or something. He just doesnt fight out of fun, he fights always for a reason. Love ur reactions keep it up

Also, I disagree with the editor about Luffy being far off. When you are able to beat a Sea King easily, you can pretty much survive on the Grand Line. What's more, Luffy and his crew brought down Crocodile who was a Shichibukai, one of the most powerful holders in the world.
