Mark, the lead guitarist, is ranked at number 27 of the best guitarists, although I think he is the best. Mark is also left handed playing a right hand guitar. He s a total musical genius and nobody will ever sound like Dire Staits again [except Mark}. I had the pleasure of seeing them live and it was a pure adventure and they did 4 encores. The greatest bands play live and Dire Straits always add something extra keeping their audience in awe. Thank you for a great reaction

Never list your favorite guitar player the same as anyone else's list. There's only one best for everybody. Be proud to say your own number one. No one else's opinions matter when it comes to music and musicians. That's all yours, enjoy it. That's what it's all for.

(14:00) I think the thing that's enthralling about some live performances like this one is that you've got a performer at the absolute peak and you see how completely in control he (in this case) is. You can tell from the grin on his face leading up to the outro guitar solo that he knows he's about to play a 3,000 note solo, and he knows he's going to hit all 3000 notes. And he's going to bend a lot of those notes to his well, and all of that's going to go perfectly. And even though every last person in the room knows the song and knows what normally comes next, he's still going to be able to surprise them with something better than they're hoping for. Whatever the genre, there's something about seeing masters who are in complete control. Dire Straits aren't my favorite band and Sultans isn't my favorite song, but Knopfler is so good you can't help but smile, watching him own that room.

This is my leaving my house for work at 4am song. When a band blows away their studio effort with a live version there is nothing more satisfying. Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb one of those and David Gilmour near the end is hard to find but the 9 min live version has about 4 extra minutes of one of Davids most epic solos or his band mates solo not sure who plays electric and whom plays the acoustic

You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing

Live Dire Straits was a force of nature and human brilliance the likes of which we shall never see again. Mark Knopfler was my personal guitar hero all through my adolescence. He plays fingerstyle-without a pick-but he could shred with the very best. Im 40 years old, so this made me strange among my peers. But when I started pulling off those riffs on my guitar, no one was laughing anymore.

Great group. Great tune. Great reaction!! I might have shared this with you already... My dire straight story. It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

The studio version was one of the first tracks they ever cut as a band. It's amazing, but they were a four piece at the time: just guitars, bass, and drums. By the time of this performance they had added the keys, and been recording and touring constantly for five years. This is one of the great live acts of the era at the top of their game.

The whole Alchemy concert is one of the best live concert videos ever. Mark is so good and his finger picking style is like nobody else. Only Lyndsay Buckingham, formerly from Fleetwood Mac, is even close in technique. Mark is able to not just play the strings he wants he mutes those he doesn't want as you noticed in the video. In the whole concert you see up close his right hand picking. React next to "Brothers In Arms" from the Nelson Mandela Birthday concert at Wembley. Its awesome! kzread.info/dash/bejne/dXiNlK2YlsKbXdY.html

@@DK-ed7be Totally agree that Roy, & Glen Campbell for that matter, are at the highest guitarists attain but having seen a lot of videos they did finger pick. But, Mark did it differently. After several years of finger picking he decided he was going to break the rule where the thumb and fingers were each assigned certain strings to play. He started to use whatever digit was available on any string and it opened up much of the richness in his sound. You can add Chet Atkins to the list as well. I rarely declare anything in music to be the best. No objective standards. 👍🏻👍🏻🎸

Dire Straits were huge especially in the 80’s, I have wonderful memories seeing them countless times, amazing live concerts, Mark Knopfler along with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd are 2 of my favourite genius guitarists PS: You should react from the same concert their song Telegram Road it’s a masterpiece

Dire Straits were brilliant. “Love over Gold” was the very first CD I bought, back in the days when CDs cost £20 each, and a CD player was £300! (1985).

First time catching your channel like the rolling comments, love to see younger people loving our era music, just watching you hear the changes you would have lost your bolts at their concerts, it is a life changing experience,a true right of passage for us 70s 80s youths, this is a lesson in musicianship, showmanship, and respect for their fans. Thankful of growing up in the UK during this fantastic musical era.I believe your synopsis of the clarity and exuberance of the live performance is spot on, this just goes another 5 levels on the studio version.🍻👍

Working class lads from the north of England...I grew up with the Beatles, Genesis, Floyd and pretty much all the great bands through the 60s and 70s, then came Dire Straits...🥰 man, you gotta love them...and that difference you mention between the studio and live versions? That's like the difference between a book and a film version..the books always better 😊
