No, Jessica. The black guitar is a bass guitar (played by John Ilsley), the white guitar (played by Hal Lindes) is a softer rhythm guitar. The banjo- LIKE sound is Mark Knopfler on the red guitar (the singer) playing the high notes so fast it gives the illusion of being a banjo. Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.

Mark Knopfler also used the finger picking method similar to traditional banjo players. I can see where parts of the song might remind her of a banjo.

The finger plucking gives a very different sound than the hard guitar pick. Make no mistake, this is rock and roll, through and through. This whole performance is minty. 👍

My dad learned finger picking on his guitar… not long after this song, now that I think about it. He was never a Knoppfler, but he got pretty good.
Mark is one of thee greatest guitar players. Ever.
Absolutely one of the best live performances ever captured. They fell into the groove of the many and created perfection as one. Good reaction! ♥
It is not country. It is Rock. One of best Live Performance ever done.

To be fair knopfler definitely puts some folk elements into the playing which can come off a bit country in places. But yeah, rock!

true, but i think i get what they meant with a "country" sound. there are some elements that give that vibe a bit.

This song is more than just one genre. There are definitely country elements amongst other genres in this.

There isn’t anything country about this song. That’s like saying Bob Dylan is country. 🤦♂️
Imagine seeing one of the greatest bands of all time for the first time, then imagine seeing a songwriting, guitar virtuoso for the first time at the helm. This is the perfect reaction. Welcome to the world of Mr Mark Knopfler.

Terry's father was at one of his concerts for the first time, which motivated him and the band even more.
Fun fact, if you look up the 4 stages of alchemy, it coincides with the gradual introduction of the guitars after the softer period ends at around 14:47 . The black and white guitars come first representing the first two stages of melanosis and leucosis. Next, the yellowish/gold spotlight falls on Mark as he walks forward and picks up the pace, representing the citrinitas process. Finally the 4th stage of the rubedo (reddening) is completed through Mark's solo bringing everyone together in the end, as if completing the philosopher stone - which is also red, like his jacket and guitar. Not sure if they meant it like that or not... (: but I guess they didn't call it "alchemy" by mistake. And the band definitely managed to create real gold out of nothing with this performance.
No banjo here. Mark Knopfler (red guitar) is plucking the strings with his fingers in a style called "chicken pickin' " probably giving you the idea of a banjo.
To pause a Rock guitar solo is a mortal sin. To pause it twice in the same song means you're doomed...

Isn't that just David Gilmour lol?
You can’t listen if you’re talking … but top marks for enthusiasm 😊
It was the first. Time the drummers family seen him playing live..
Terry William's dad was in the audience, and this was the first time he saw them play live 🏴 🤘
Oh yeah, you could feel every bit of this. Talent, harmony, and oh what energy.
Mark Knopfler plays without a pick. That gives him a distinctive sound.
Beyond awesome, one of the greatest rock guitarists of our time. Check out Telegraph road from the same show please.
Hello form Australia. Glad you picked up on the brilliant drummer Terry Willaims the drummer - drove the whole song. This is what it was like to go to concerts in the 70s and 80s where there weren't a lot of extravagent light shows. Just everybody having FUN!
this song was about a band playing in my local pub in Deptford/ Greenwich. the guys are referencing a typical south london scene. last orders et al.
The greatest
Best reaction I ever saw.
Thew bass is actually part of the percussion...with the drums the cords are so much thicker.
Mark Knopfler chap in the red blazer is considered to be one of the best guitarists ever if not the best...even Prince was asked once "what is it like to be the best guitarist in history? " his answer was you better go ask Mark Knopfler...
Terry Wiliams on drums
Not country music, but it's has some country influence in some sections of Mark Knopfler's playing, some "chickin pickin" type of licks, but really what the band has done in here has mixed rock, and some other genre's, so that it's hard to classify it, other than saying it's really good! And yes, OMG, let's give credit to the drummer, phenomenal!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.

Great reaction guys... i was the same when i first saw this. Unreal! ❤
I think what you are hearing on the guitar is called a banjo, and I agree. Mark's finger picking style resembles what is used on a banjo and the tone of his guitar is set to resemble a banjo.

Yeah.. we just kept on hearing that sound … it’s accurate. Thank you so much
Exactly the bass is the black guitar but the singer plays with his fingers only therefore he can make the banjo sound with his guitar
You guys are a really nice couple and your reaction to Dire Straits was really cool. I'll definitely stay tuned for now and subscribe and see what happens. All the best for you and best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)

Simply the GOAT Mark Knopfler is...
It's called the mastiff.
the singer does the guitar riffs....mark knopfler is his name.....what he can do with a guitar is beond human.....thanks fr reacting
The brilliant thing about Mark is that he is a finger-picker, therefore no pic in his performances. Definitely one if not the best finger-picking guitarists of all time.... If you like guitar solos, check out Tommy Emmanuel with "Class Gas"'
Its ROCK at its best. try just pausing 2 times it will make the reaction flow better. Keep pushing forward. Peace from USA
Never pause this guitar solo!!
If you admire this band please investigate more. I am your newest fan. Looking forward to you reacting to Telegraph road.
2 are playing guitar one is playing the bass totally different.
In the song Guitar George and Harry was in the Easybeats and Guitar George is none other than George Young Angus Young's older brother Guitar George and Harry produced the second biggest album of all time AC/DC's Back in Black
Sounds a little like a banjo. He doesn't use a pick, he strums with his fingers. Mark Knopfler to me is the most unique if not the best guitarist ever.
Great band from my generation. The lead guitarist doesn't use a pick. But the drummer's nickname is pick

Do you know why our bands are still around forty and fifty years later? Because they made the best music ever Played. I wonder how many bands from today will be around in 40 or 50 years? My guess, a few
Telegraph Road Telegraph Road Telegraph Road. Just do it, we know your gonna love it. Same Show Alchemy Live
Great reaction, I think the banjo sound you hear is Mark Knopfler finger-picking style, he does not use a guitar pick. He picks the strings like a banjo player.
Mark Knopfler was the lead singer/lead guitarist/songwiter - just excellent! His guitar wasn't electric believe it or not. Sultans of Swing was obviously written by him, just amazing guy. Infact they were ALL special, especially the drummer Terry Williams!! AMAZING!!!

❤❤❤❤ thank you
Mark uses a finger picking technique which banjo players also use
He plays guitar how you would playa banjo
Mark Knopfler (Red jacket) is a finger plucker.
Mark Knopfler is the supreme fingerpicking God. Full stop - No contest :)
Yes you are right, Knopfler was influenced by the original Country artists with the clean clear guitar tone and picking style, when this sound came out in the late 70s it was like nothing else anybody was doing
This ban Drive Straight is very good. The lads said they sound country n western but I disagree. More rock and blues to me.
The sound you're picking up on is coming from Mark Knopfler's picking style. Most guitarists use a plastic pick. Mark finger picks. The reason it reminds you of a banjo, is because banjo players finger pick when they play, as well.
That's funny to hear your reaction. The singer is Mark he is lead guitarist and makes all the sounds your hear as in banjo like sounds The bass guitarist is a black guitar not banjo lol
You are not wrong. The guitarist is heavily influenced by blue-grass and country-style blues.
Héllo de France Bonsoir regarder le live Télégraph Road super 😊😊😊
Rollling Stones, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Scorpion, …..Neil Young, Cat Steven’s, Bod Dylan… Lot of rock white music.
This is rock music, not country music. Great reaction, but I think you stopped the music a little too much.
Drummers drive the rhythm of the song...
There is no banjo there, no banjo, no fiddler, nothing but guitar...and a master, playing it.
less talking ... more listening ! ;-)
Ur hearing a banjo as the. Lead guitarist plays with his fingers and not a pick
Acoustic guitar is what you mean
Sorry, you disturb it all by constantly stopping the music. Please let the music speak!

Reactions are all about stopping and talking about what is going on. Also they have to stop because that seems to lower the risk of being blocked.
It's OK., but why did you show Jessica the stop button? :)
Te recomiendo el disco The guitar trio con Paco de Lucía, Al di Meola y McLaughlin.

Interrupting this song with guitar solos is absolute sacrilege!
the instrument is called a Banjo
As many have likely already said.... there is no banjo. You showed the guitar he was playing and then thought it was a banjo.
It's called "Hard Rock" and it is a mortal sin to cut off a guitar solo
So I have never heard Dire Straits before? Really
No country, rock/blues/jazz fusion.
Ok, Im guessing you are new to reacting. Dont pause in the middle of solos. You can talk Over it, before it starts or after it ends, just never freaking stop it. Thanks
This is as far from country as you could possibly get.. This is one of the greatest ROCK bands of all time. and No there is No Banjo..
You stop it and talk too much. There's nothing country about this. It is pure rock. Great choice of music though.
great content but guys too many pauses
Jessica is completely wrong
those fingers are being controlled by God himself.
Please don’t keep cutting it to talk in the best places
Too many interruptions just to figure out that he's picking the guitar, like a banjo, instead of strumming. There's no way she could be blown away and interrupt so often. Not the way anyone enjoys something..
Please do not pause during a guitar solo. Sorry I cant listen any more when you keep pausing during the solo talking crap about who is playing the banjo sound. Leave the silly comments to the end
Twangy
Stopping too much loses the flow. Timing..
Stooppppppppp
Learn guitars before you review
Too much pausing.
22 mins is way to long
So frustrating stopping the recording in the middle of the guitar sol, cmon.
Rock and roll, pop music are from white pple. And are the best.
For goodness sake learn a little about music before you set yourselves up as reactors/critics. Otherwise you simply appear silly!
You just do not pause a Mark Knopfler guitar solo , you just don`t. you are very bad people.
