Lyrics
Hey sucker
(What the hell's got into you?)
Hey sucker
(Now there's nothing you can do)
Well I hadn't seen your face around town awhile,
So I greeted you, with a knowing smile,
When I saw that girl upon your arm,
I knew she won your heart with a fatal charm.
I said "Soul Boy, let's hit the town!"
I said "Soul Boy, what's with the frown?"
But in return, all you could say was
"Hi George, meet my fiancee"
Young Guns,
Having some fun
Crazy ladies keep 'em on the run.
Wise guys realize there's danger in emotional ties.
See me, single and free
No tears, no fears, what I want to be.
One, two, take a look at you
Death by matrimony!
Hey sucker,
(What the hell's got into you?)
Hey sucker!
(Now there's nothing you can do.)
A married man? you're out of your head
Sleepless nights, on an H.P. bed
A daddy by the time you're twenty-one
If your happy with a nappy then you're in for fun.
But you're here
And you're there
Well there's guys like you just everywhere
Looking back on the good old days?
Well this young gun says CAUTION PAYS!
Young Guns,
Having some fun
Crazy ladies keep 'em on the run.
Wise guys realize there's danger in emotional ties.
See me, single and free
No tears, no fears, what I want to be.
One, two, take a look at you
Death by matrimony!
I remember when he such fun and everthing was fine,
I remember when we use to have a good time,
Partners in crime.
Tell me that's all in the past and I will gladly walk away,
Tell me that you're happy now,
Turning my back
Nothing to say!
"Hey tell this jerk to take a hike,
There's somethin' 'bout that boy I don't like"
"Well sugar he don't mean the things he said"
"Just get him outta my way, 'cause I'm seeing red
We got plans to make, we got things to buy
And you're wasting time on some creepy guy"
"Hey shut up chick, that's a friend of mine,
Just watch your mouth babe, you're out of line"
OoooooH!
GET BACK
HANDS OFF
GO FOR IT!
Young Guns,
Having some fun
Crazy ladies keep 'em on the run.
Wise guys realize there's danger in emotional ties.
See me, single and free
No tears, no fears, what I want to be.
One, two, take a look at you
Death by matrimony!

I was born a year later, however, I can appreciate the appearance. Whilst comparatively I've just hit my 40s, I have just reached the point where it appears that someone has just pressed the acceleration button on the speed of life!
Take one look at George & he was destined to be the star he was, but Wham were meant to be, they created some classic songs that today still stand the test of time, I absolutely loved them & I still do & I saw George many times in concert throughout his solo career. ... For the record he said if it hadn't of been for Andrew, George Michael would never of existed because fundamentally as as person George was very shy..... So thankyou Andrew, not only for being one of his best friends but for giving him that confidence to become the star he was..... All in all one hell of a group & genius solo songwriter
Make fun of me all you want but I still can do the dance routine for this song today. I miss the 80's

For me, this is up there with the very very best TOTP performances. 1) Consider the song; an unorthodox structure, with an amazing mix of soul, rap, and blistering hooks (most young bands around this time were bashing synths and overdoing the eyeliner). For such a young songwriter (indeed for ANY pop writer) this is exceptional work. 2) Consider the lyric; there's not a single word out of place here, it's just perfect. 3) Consider the dance routine; no fancy choreographers involved here, all done in George's lounge, and worked out in super fine detail by George, Andrew and Shirley. The looks they swap, the exuberance, the moves, it's sheer pop perfection. Watching this just fills me with joy. RIP George, for sure, your amazing music will live on. (Ps; kudos to Deon Estus's bass work. The man is an unheralded hero of Wham! and George's work.

I wasn't a fan back then (they were the embodiment, for me, of the silliness and shallowness of the 80s and I was into new wave and post punk at the time). Yet, listening to it now, I realise their music was very solid, and only now do I realise that the horns were similar to other bands I used to like (Haircut 100 and Orange Juice for example).

lol At the time they were scandalous and kinda looked ridiculous and not exactly ''tough''. George and Andrew couln't help they were pretty boys, but George definitely used the shock factor to get noticed. I remember my mother clutching her pearls to ''abortion pays''. haha So innocent looking now, but back then.... Back to what you were saying, though, they were fun. That's what music today has lost. You had fun watching them have fun. It was obvious this wasn't just a business arrangement and George was beyond entertaining until the day he died.

Why are clothes in the 1980s more stylish than they are today?
I have watched this performance several times but it wasn't until I watched the new Wham ! documentary on Netflix that I learned just how vitally important it was to their career . This song was floundering as it had only reached 42 on the charts and wasn't expected to go any higher. This would have been their second flop in a row after their first release Wham ! Rap (Enjoy What You Do) had failed so things weren't looking good for them to be able to continue their music career. It was a huge twist of luck for George and Andrew that the show was left quickly scrambling for a replacement after a performer cancelled at the last minute and they got the spot .They nailed it as can be seen and the song got the major boost it needed to finally reach it's peak position of # 3. With Wham ! having a hit with this song Wham ! Rap (Enjoy What You Do) was rereleased and it would fare much better the second time going to #8.
I said it once and I'll say it once again..... George Michael was a natural...!!! look how young they are in this performance...!!! I cannot believe you are gone..... But still living in our hearts......

This is better than modern Rap. This has a coherent negative. Now days rap is just endless punchlines and mumbling. God bless Wham
This song is so good and the back up singers are excellent and really add a lot. This is so unique with the rap elements, the pop elements, the dancing, the backing vocals, and multiple change ups like multiple songs in one that fit together perfectly, love the go for it part so cool and unique. GM’s solo stuff is great as well but this is just so unique and enjoyable I wish they did more like this as there is nothing like this nowadays.
I want to go back in time!!!. I remember this when it first came out, where's my cut off purple leather jacket, with fringe, my Z Cavaricchi, 6 pleated trouser with extreme tapered leg,and hi-rise waist, asymmetrical hair cut, and silver grey Capezio dancers boots. Definitely getting into the clubs back then, and being comped with drink tickets and free entry. Miss the 80s!!!

If you are an American, it’s because this was in the beginning of Wham! during their first album and they didn’t have hit singles in the States until “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” They did go on American music TV shows to promote the first album’s singles like American Bandstand though, so it wasn’t for a lack of trying. The first album’s singles likely failed to catch on with American radio because back then, they wouldn’t play any rap singles unless it was stations that played black music and the black stations likely didn’t take Wham! very seriously because they were white Brits.

@@RocStarr913 that's a joke. Your comment on American Black Radio not giving Wham a fair shot. In this song, George was biting rhymes from Sugar Hill Gang from 1979. By 1982-83, there's was no way this song would be considered hip hop, and was a cheesy, corny, rehashed rhyme. However, a white audience in the UK may have been smitten with it. It was catchy enough and very good. But Black Urban USA radio listeners would have rolled their eyes listening to this in 1983.

I remember this this is how we were introduced to WHAM and the rest was history
That's how to nail your last minute TV debut opportunity folks!

"Hey sucker....what the hell's got into you"?....love that line!
Currently reading Andrew's wonderful book! I've just finished the detailed description of when they recorded this bit and it is super emotional, as a twenty-year old, to live these moments afresh!
Does anybody know what band/performer couldn't make it to TOTP? Never used to like this song but after watching the Wham documentary and realising the break it gave them and then rewatching this performance,,I think it's a classic !
I always thought men wearing "no socks with shoes" started in 1984 with Miami Vice, but George and Andrew are sporting the look here in 1982. I personally hated the fad, and I was glad when it died down by 1989 or so. Reminds me too much of being an elementary school boy and having that pressure to walk around with no socks and shoes on a cold day, but you had to look "cool".

You felt pressured to not wear socks?
I am 55 and I find this to be absolutely epic!
These two guys... What an amazing couple they were..! It's as if you can really feel their friendship in every video or concert they did.😊🕺🕺💕

Yes, definitely soulmates I'd say, George looked the happiest performing in Wham! 😊

@@girlinterrupted243 do you mean they were lovers? Not at all. Just close friends who grew up together and together spent the most carefree and lighthearted years of their life.

@@Anonymous-nt2nz Totally agree with you. Never seen George really happy after Wham, despite his huge, stellar solo career.
We Miss Your Voice 😢😢🕊️🕊️ The Legend Beautiful ❤️ A Big Hug From The Sky Wonderful George
This was the moment when Martin Kemp fell in love with Shirlie - seeing her on TOTP. She had already noticed him too (in Spandau Ballet) and George played a big part in getting them together. Just read Martin and Shirlies book 'A love story'...highly recommend!!!
ahhh the 80's .. for me the very best. I remember getting dressed up in my new romantic gear on a saturday morning as a teenager, to go into town, hair firmly sprayed in place...
Omg I was 12!!! Still played at our teen clubs 4 years later! Fell in love with clubs because of George Michael!!!!
We need more of George's music in this world
I love how that brunette girl at the back is dressed!! Pirate shirt and suspenders!! So cool and so quirky 80s 🥰
Love the incorporated acting!! This is like a live performance & music video all in One!
Checking out WHAM videos as I just finished Andrew Ridgely's EXCELLENT memoir. Did not know these songs (only the giant hits that were inescapable from radio/MTV) & only bought George's solo works. He was always an insecure, troubled soul despite his looks & genius🙏 RIP

That’s because in America, the singles from the first album likely all failed to catch on with radio stations, particularly because of the rapping and that they were white Brits doing that.
