I remember watching this performance on American Bandstand when it first aired. I was a teenager and instantly fell in love with George Michael. I was a die hard fan. I'm so glad I was able to see him in concert years later. What a PHENOMENAL vocalist he was. Gone way too soon. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world and continue to RIP George Michael ⚘⚘⚘⚘🕊🕊🕊🕊

George Michael was an exceptional rapper. I think people forget just how pioneering and edgy this music was in 1982. Wham were doing hip-hop! And it was, and remains, quite fantastic. The 1980s were incredible.

He sure knew how to put rhyme to rhythm. They found the key to the vision Deborah Harry may have had when she did a solo album with Chic after "The Rapture" succes with Blondie. This "Grease-on-the-beach" concept also really worked well.

@@jasfan8247Music-wise they had nothing to do with Blondie or Debbie Harry. Their main influences were Funk, Soul and R&B...and what Blondie does on "The Rapture" leans more towards Spoken Word than Rap...and Rap and Hip Hop is quite not the same by this time (1983)...

@@SmartRobot-wc2fb True about Blondie-the band but Wham breathes Chic all over on Fantastic. And Debbie Harry did a soloalbum with Team-Chic. It's all hidden in the bass. Just bc Chic was out-of-fashion one time their sound is all over the 80's (with UK bands)

@@jasfan8247 Spot on about the Nile Rodgers/Chic influence. Artists like D-Train and others are referenced too; George clearly bathed himself in soul/funk/r&b, so that was to be expected. And his 'flow' is reminiscent of Harry's and other rap dance jams of the early eighties; not something that would register with Melle Mel or Rakim, lol, but it is rap in the broad sense.

This is amazing! I love it when the interviewer asks how old Andrew and George are! I remember when Wham! first started, I was in my first year at University and me and all my friends loved it! We used to rush down to the TV room really early on Top of the Pops night so we'd get a good view of the boys. Andrew wad always my favourite, he was so sweet, but George was lovely too and so talented, what a voice! Their dancing was incredible. So sad that George is gone, it's so hard to believe even now after almost 6 years. But darling Andrew's still with us, still so good looking and nice, and his book about him and George and the band is such a lovely read, and lovely pictures, too God bless both of you xxxxxxx

I had the re-issued 'Wham! Rap' single that was re-recorded with new lyrics. Apparently Americans didn't get the "B1B2" references. I very distinctly remember having to tell my friends what "DHSS" meant, just as I had to tell them what 'UB40' meant, and why they called their first (and best) album "Signing Off.' Turning 12 in 1980 is perhaps the luckiest thing to come my way - the early to mid-Eighties were a magical, incredibly creative time.

First time I have seen this, and I am amazed at just how young the really were! Amazing to think that they made hardly any money at all on their first few records and were in fact broke most of the time, still living at home with Mom and DAD as they made their first few albums! I see now why my parents steered me away from the music business and into the medical field. I am just six months older than GM and was experimenting with cassette tape recorders in my room, using my flute, and two guitars to write music and record songs. I was recording music and trying to do what he did in my bedroom after school. Drove my parents nuts. I was even in a Wrangler Star Search Contest and bombed because my 14 year old sister sang with me, and we had a hard time without experience on the stage singing in a bar for the first time. I was barely 19 when that happened. I gave up!! I stuck to singing at church and writing gospel songs. Now I am 60 and have lots of friends, and am loved and glad I did not take the same path GM did. I would rather have friends who love me, and have a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is better. RIP GM

George had a similar career arc as the careers of some boy band stars who later became music icons in their own right. Justin Timberlake, Harry Styles, etc

I remember watching this show when it first broadcast (dating myself) but a friend of mine and I saw them 6month earlier in London and knew they would make it big.

Most presenters of that era seemed to get paid just to embarrass themselves making really stupid and unnecessary comments (around the globe in any language, not just this one!)...

George was apparently very generous and made sure his band mate was set for life after they slip up for his solo.

Fun attitude, lots of energy, great songs.... but for sure, the well rehearsed dance moves pushed them over the top ! Even lifting the "New Romantic" partner jives from the likes of Japan, Spandau and Duran to augment this live performance!

Also Just Four Months earlier they made their TV Debut on Top Of The Pops which in no form way was a Ripoff of American Bandstand but it's The UK's Number One Music Show and if you did TOTP you had "arrived". Alot of US Stars appeared on the Show. The Jackson Five, The Jets, Nu Schooz. John Lennon did his First TV Solo Appeareance without The Beatles when he performed Instant Karma with The Plastic Ono Band, Arcadia (which was an outside Project Of Duran Duran), and Bananrama performed on The Show first as Backing Vocalists for Fun Boy 3 and now they celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Andrew Ridgeley is in a committed relationship with Keren Woodward. Also like so many UK Pop Groups Andrew & George met in School.
