Whaling (1940-1949)

British Instructional Films Ltd presents a Classroom Film.
Western Coast of Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Saldana Bay (sp?). Views of a harbour. Shots of a whaling boat - the Steenberg. C/U of man sailing boat. C/U of his hands on the helm and of ship's compass. Shot of the harpoon on the back of the boat. Top shot of a man winding rope into a coil, there is a kitten in the middle. The "lookout" climbs up to the crows nest by a ladder. He climbs into a barrel and looks out to sea. He shouts down that he has spotted a whale - "Whale ho!". Captain steers boat into position. The "gunner" runs along the side of boat and aims the harpoon. C/U of him firing the harpoon. The rope is fed out by means of a winch. Shot of the whale being lashed to the side of the boat. C/U of whale's tail. Name on the back of the boat reads: Steenberg, Capetown.
Shot of the boat sailing back to harbour. The whale is dragged up on to slipway (it is big!). Shot of the winch which is hauling it. The whale is put beside other catches. The whale is measured with a tape. C/U of the Whale's mouth and its beleen (?). C/U of the whale's eye. Man sharpens large knife and several men cut up the whale. Blubber is cut and the winch pulls it away. The blubber is cut into smaller pieces. Blubber is fed down a chute. The rest of the carcass is pulled up the landing stage. More shots of men working on the blubber. Shot of vat where blubber is kept and storage tanks.

When I was a little kid I would have to say maybe five or six I can’t remember. I found a huge glass jug of yellow liquid in my grandmothers garage one time. I asked her what it was and she said it’s whale oil don’t play with that. Now I’m 29 I’m willing to bet that there’s some old folks out there who still have old jugs of whale oil somewhere.

@@DelilahBeard During the inter-war period, the average number of whales taken in Antarctic waters was over 20,000 whales per year. These whales showed no sign of poor nutrition, so we can conclude that sufficient Krill was available for, at an absolute minimum, 20,000 whales on an annual basis. I don't think feeding the new, fast-breeding whales is going to be a problem.

I just don’t think they can be humanely killed. The harpoon and guns don’t kill then instantly. It’s a painful death and with that I don’t agree. If it’s could be done quickly like a cow, maybe. But I love whales so much. 😭

@@kkrb1212 "...a painful death and with that, I don't agree. ...I love these whales so much." Do you hate orcas? There is a video on here (shot by the Monterey Bay Whale watchers) showing a two hour long ordeal in which a pod of orcas repeatedly ram and chew up a grey whale and its calf. A horrific, drawn out death for mom and baby. I know, I know, it's nature when orcas do it. It's "inhumane" (what a strange term, regarding how it used) when humans fairly quickly dispatch a whale.

Wrong. It’s pure scripted rhetoric that the explosive charge killed/kills the whale instantly. Most of the time it did/does not. Further, if the whale is with calf, the neonatal whale will starve to death over the course of the following weeks. Any cattle or swine slaughter house that did things like this on a regular basis would be shut down because of violations of inhumane slaughter regulations.

Excessive whaling by Europe and the United States has ended, and many species of cetaceans are on the rise. Nonetheless, They wanted to make a whale scapegoat to hide the environmental destruction caused by industry and weapons of war. It was surely especially satisfying to have a pleasant feeling by hitting Japan in Asia. Japan has endured their harassment

It is fascinating to look at these men, because they just act like they're normal and they're not doing anything wrong. And they did all this for lubricants, soap making and margarine. They could have just grown some coconut trees or some algae. But even to this day people are like this. People who have meat eating mindset, they just can't get it. They're so incredibly wrong, people are not meant to eat meat, people who eat meat are so unhealthy and morally inferior. I eat a bit every now and then but the more I know the sicker and more disgusting it gets. Being vegan my life is so great and meat eaters are just so ignorant.

Please, try to understand. There ARE ways to ethically source meat, while unethically sourced meat is a huge problem, you by no means should put down every single person who eats meat as a horrible person. As I am not putting you down for your beliefs. Humans are not categorically supposed to eat anything specific. Let people choose to eat what they eat, and if they do it at an unhealthy amount, or specifically and knowingly doing it unethically than that’s a different problem. You also need to remember that quality healthy diets / lifestyles can get incredibly expensive, because America is a capitalist machine. To my prior point about humans not being “meant” To eat anything specific, there are many carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore primates. The leading theory is that we evolved from chimpanzees, which are omnivores; meaning they eat both plants and meat. So please try to be more understanding, and instead of putting people down who eat meat try to respect one another, instead of instantly assuming someone is ignorant purely cause of what they consume to stay alive.

I hope you know that you're smart enough (Which is already stretching it) to write a comment on the internet on a device manufactured, things which only exist because of intelligent design, which we wouldn't have if our distant ancestors hadn't included meat in their diet which contributes to neurological development, especially overtime. You exist because humans killed and ate things.

@@gloomyallo1830 Actually 80% of the human brain and the nervous system is made up of DHA medium chain polyunsaturated fat which comes from omega 3 and omega 6 which are fats that are only made by plants and are not found in meat besides for animals which eat meat. However by eating the animals your exposed the the pollution concentration, You're citing a quack scientific theory from a book called blood sex and power, your argument is women needed men to hunt to get iron so they could raise infants but the issue is that vegan outside of having much higher levels of omega three have much higher iron levels then meat eaters too. In fact meat eaters have all the same nutrient deficiencies of vegans and some they don't. This is what I'm talking about when I say meat eaters are just the height of ignorance, this guy just quotes all this made up bullshit to rationalize his food addiction. You're not eating meat for protein, plants are a much better source of protein, you're trying to get cholesterol to make your hormones work but plants provide much better sources of fat and plants provide omega 3 & 6 which is which outside of being far more intelligent, vegans also sustain much higher levels of sex steriods and have far lower rate of impotency. It's a fact vegans are healthier then vegeterians and omnivorse in almost all measurable manners. Meat eaters are chronically sick, with cancer, diabete, artherosclerosis, parkinsons, alzhiemers, etc, and they have short lives which diminishing health vs vegan who have long lives with continuously increasing strength
