World whale day 🐋
Yesterday was #worldwhaleday and I will never miss an opportunity to highlight how whales are not only a huge climate solution via blue carbon, but have tremendous potential to accelerate ocean conservation and climate efforts because of how the public views them.
Thanks to the collective effort of the #savethewhales movement in the 70s, whales are a deeply loved group of flagship species that can serve as a conservation entry point to meaningful engagement. They spark inspiration, connect folks to the ocean and wildlife, and provide unforgettable experiences in nature. Now imagine harnessing that power for bold earth-saving action?!
We literally have coastal economies built around whale watching, across the entire world. There are thousands of photographers that focus solely on whales, and endless public engagement opportunities through citizen science.
Save whales, save the ocean. 🐳
