Whale sightings spike in Washington’s waters

Whale sightings have increased over the past few years, but close encounters between the mammals and Puget Sound boaters are causing concern for environmentalists.

With my little time boating in the sound I've seen these vessel do circles(yes at a distance) around the whales chasing them down and frightening the other sea creatures as well. Maybe they can be viewed remotely not counting the waist of fossil fuels. I could be wrong just my opinion... 🐋

And to think I spent decades working in Grays Harbor and watched whales, including Orcas regularly come into the harbor to hunt for food. And on the land side of my worksite I watched elk, deer, peregrine falcons, gyrfalcons, bald eagles, snowy owls and multiple other animals. I should have ran tours on my lunch break to make extra cash!

I know it's not likely possible (my parents are both from Tacoma and my grandpa was a shipbuilder) but still, I just kinda wish we didn't upset all those critters with the engine noise and pollution and whatnot. Glad to see they're still thriving somehwat, though! Good custodianship ethics up there.

Not exactly thriving, just an improvement from the downward trajectory they’d been on before. The resident orcas only eat salmon, chinook if I remember correctly, whose numbers have reduced by some insane %… you’d think they would eat some of the seals or sea lions like the transient ones do, but nope.. they’ll starve if they can’t find enough salmon. Anyway, a couple years ago there were 2 babies that died not long after they were born so it was looking pretty bad, so any improvement at this point is a win.

Yes! I also feel that there should be more restrictions on new housing developments. So much forest is lost to new houses being built for the masses of people who are moving into the area. It's just heartbreaking. Other states that don't have gorgeous nature like WA are much more strict about new constructions. Why not WA, which has so much to lose?

Along the Central Coast in California, from Baja to Alaska these tour companies know the migration routes and helicopters fly and spot them and tons of these boats go out... I've been on my SUP and seen a humpback within twenty yards or so... I quickly sat down and held my breath in all and silent appreciation. These boats will actually skim closer and closer to the whales just so the tourists can get a selfie or even reach down and try to touch a whale. Same as 19th century shooting of elephants in my book. Do the whales die from a shot from a bullet? No. But migration interference and the noise and the chaos will chase them into other regions. Silly tourists, just buy a postcard.

Whales are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and its illegal to even get within 100 yards of them, so I can’t see a bunch of tour boats routinely getting close enough to touch them lol. They’d lose their license real fast… and this was signed into law in the 70s.
