'Whack Jobs’ Film: Fat-Bike Grooming in Michigan
Спорт
‘Whack Jobs’ is a short film about winter cycling in the Marquette, Mich., area. It profiles the personalities (and trail-grooming technologies) that foster a winter singletrack trail network “that has become an example for the world,” according to producer Aaron Peterson.

Im curious how your trail system works. Do the riders pay a fee. Who pays for all the grooming. Id love to get something goin in my area MASSEY ONTARIO.

We have hundreds of miles of winter trails up here in the interior of Alaska. Some are groomed, some are sort of groomed. Love what those guys are doing, a lot of the trails up here are groomed by dog sled or by regular snow mobile with a grooming drag. Been fat biking for 3 years, riding for over 30, again, love this stuff. Thanks for the excellent video on the unsung maniacs of trail work.

I'd love to own a Fat-bike one day. Must be fun to ride in the snow. Would make a great alternative for my 50cc scooter in the winter.

*Oh Yeah! That's why I bought one- so I can ride in the winter and have fun at the same time! All I need to get are some studded tires for icy conditions. I assume most people run studs in winter on the trails up there?*
OMG! Thank you so much for this video, I LOVE Marquette! I was first there in 1992 and have been back many times; just this last summer I was in Marquette for 8 days. I rode so many trails and had such a wonderful time, much has changed since '92. I also, learned about the abundance of snowbike trails in and around Marquette, so cool. I wanted to come back this Winter but, I wasn't able; however, I have already started saving for a Winter of '18-'19 trip during my break from teaching high school. I must also say how impressive it is and innovative it is that you guys are creating everything from scratch, tools, techniques, and all. However, I know why, since that I have studied the region, the people, and their heritage. Once I learned about SISU, I understood more about the UP and the Yooper way, stoic determination, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness is innate. Concerning the cinematography, this video is incredible; watching right now, this video makes has me wanting to drop all my responsibilities and spend money, I don't have to get up there ASAP to ride those freshly groomed, gorgeous snowbike trails. I will be there next snowbike season for sure, and I am coming next summer too, did I tell you I really love Marquette... I even tried to get a job teaching there last summer, even went to Ishpeming and Negaunee too, no luck. I only have about 10 years left before I can retire from my county here in Florida w/full benefits. Once I do, I am seriously considering retiring in Marquette. I know, I know, what you are thinking... This guy from Florida is crazy but, I haven't always lived in Florida, I was even born in Livonia. I also lived in Indian River, just below the bridge and it is almost the same climate due to the Lake Michigan, lake effect snow. Anyhow, I have written a novel here but, I could write forever about Marquette and the UP! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and also have a great 2018!
Nice job on this video Aaron Peterson. Kudos to these trail builders. We need this in Fort Collins, CO!
loved every second of this video. Thanks for all your hard work builders!
Amazing. Very awesome. Talk about dedication. Been fat biking here in upstate NY but you guys take it to another level. Great job!
Congratulations Marquette and NTN. I rode those trails for a summer in 2015 and they are world class. Good to see the Fat TIre Fever!
That is awesome! Great work and dedication guys! Cheers from Chelsea, MI
Love the video!.............spent 6 days in the winter of 2018 riding the SBR (snow bike trails) in and around Marquette. One of my best mtb destinations that's for sure! Great job grooming the trails! Kudos to the NTN people for all their hard work.......... as some would say: making chicken salad out of chicken $hit.
To people who ask me why I cycle all winter, I now have the perfect answer: "Keeps me out of the bars during the daytime!"

Awesome!!! Well done on the single track grooming!!!
Love your enthusiam and attitude. We share the same values up in Canada. Cheers to you!
Fat Biker in Grand Rapids here. Getting ready to hit the Cannonsburg Ski Fat Bike Series tomorrow. My favorite thing is the tracks in the snow.
Thank you for this amazing video! This is very interesting!
I’m planning my trip up there now. Awesome video. Greetings from Hartland MI!
I ride a Farley EX 9.8 The best bike I've ever had. Riding all year is great and very forgiving when you pick the wrong line on technical trails.
I grew up mountain biking in Alaska. In my late 40's now, been in the upper Midwest for 15 years, got a fat bike a couple years ago. I love trails and snow riding, it's just a different bike experience. Sure would enjoy going to a place like this.
Great video! Wish we had more of this trail grooming stuff
good job man , excellent--also beautiful snow you have there and good minus with those ice hanging down
I miss when winters were like that. We didn’t have a winter like that here in Michigan last year.
G'day. I'm from Germany and just love the tracks you make there. Good on yers! Meself rides an AWD Surly eFatty, with mudguards and packies. Love Microadventures, go bush a lot.
The " 15 " tire being pulled behind the Rokon is actually the wheel size, it will widen the trail to roughly 25-26 inches wide, which is the actual tire height.
Awesome video... Keep up the great work.
That looks like crazy fun. I hate when it snows here in the mountains of NC and trails are unbridgeable for too long. Cabin fever for sure. I want a fat tire motorcycle too.
Incredible video! Great work!
That looks amazing! Id rather spend a week biking there than skiing just about anywhere BTW have you looked into using a power rake? Flail blades might do the trick for high speed mixing. Thanks for the vid!
If everyone did something like this during the winter, everyone would love the season... hell ya.
Great video. I need to make this happen in my area of Colorado!
I agree with Pete, there is something special about riding in the winter.
very nice video , I gotta try this snow biking !
Going to have to check this out.
Love it! nice to see you own your passion. looks beautiful
I'm going to be moving to that are actually so how would I go about getting on his trail maintenance
Marquette has their shit together! LOL. Great video.

Any way to get plans or pics of your "workhorse" groomer. I use a home made one now and looking to make something better. I think I like grooming as much as riding! Thanks for great video!
Wow! Great work guys 👍🏻
Loved this. Let me know if you ever find yourselves in Anchorage AK.
I didn't see fat biking going in this direction and I have to say it's very interesting with the avenues it opens.
Very well done video!
A pleasure to watch!
Know where in Marquette County is the hotspot for all this to happen what what what are the towns primarily thank you very much what a great great video
Freaking Awesome....Congrats guys...!!!! GSD....!!!!
Now you can combined the Fat Tire bike riding with long distance in the Michigan cold butt hang and if you don't know what that is it's where people go out and 40 below zero and camp in hammocks which is perfect for Fat Tire long distance racing get out a whole new category the Portage
Yeah I'm from Minnesota we have several trails in the Twin Cities for how much snow we get not each system has anything that actually Grooms it other than bikes themselves or snowshoeing it is wicked awesome to ride out in the snow very calming conditions vary that's the fun challenge of things it's not always the same even on the same Trail
Love da You Pee. Great video, highlighting an awesome northern culture.
awesome video!! what's the best way to find out what the conditions are like up in the mqt area. I'm down in Traverse City and want to ride my Fattie up there this weekend but wondering about the conditions.

Barb B NTN and Ramba Facebook pages regularly have grooming updates
You look like You are having fun. You are a few steps ahead of Lake Tahoe we have to rely on snow shoe's to pack out our trails.
Why has anyone given a "thumbs down" to this video?
Good stuff! Great video!
I've not had mine more than a few days, but I love it! My front tire measures 4.25" wide and looks like it ought to be six! People smile at it, and most have something nice to say if I stop near them. (prolly laughing inwardly, but being polite towards the whack job riding it)
Excellent!
Ride a fat bike in Florida...insane on the trails..grips like crazy and corners like it is on rails..no washout here!...the key is spending the money on a quality bike mine is about 28lbs...I see many that are in the 500-700.00 range but they weight 34-36lbs!!
great video!
Cool video, and great way of life! 👍🏻
very well made video pleasure to watch!!!!!
This is an awesome video!!!!!!
I love this video! Where have you been all my life?
Looks like some awesome riding! To those that have ridden groomed snow trails, would a 29er with Schwalbe Ice Spikers sink on these trails? They're 2.3" wide i believe.

ctimmrs If you already have the tires, or plan on riding lots of ice, then I'd give it a shot. But if you're just riding snow like this, I'd go for something else.

Sort of culturally taboo to run anything under 4 inches wide since so much work goes into keeping the trails dialed. Thanks for asking.
7:00 should look at using a snow bike to pull the drag, would be a lot less challenging, and more fun as well.
Hate riding in cold weather, but in the snow, I seem to forget it's cold. Need a fat bike now though. I don't think Santa has room in his sleigh this year though 🤑
HI i am not a "bike person" i guess but im going blind and cannot drive so i need a bike where i live is dirt slow and slush i live on ssi so i cannt spend like 5k on bike im thinking tops maybe 1500 if im lucky pref under 700 bucks can u suggest a fat bike that wont just fall apart cuz i plan to treat this thing almost like crap and it has to last at least 5+ years . thanks

@ brett no i dont plan to take care of it i had some walmart bike i beat the hell out of for 10 years and it got stolen cost 80 bucks never had a issue. im looking for a "bug out" bike and a fat bike with tow ability seems to fit my bill so it will have to survive mud rain sand dirt and 0 upkeep for as long as humanly possible i may get 2 and have 2 for everyday =3 thats why i ask

This is how a skihill groomer works too. Big track machines till the snow with a highspeed tiller followed by a packer. Makes the snow really hard and fast to ski on.
Now THAT is fatbiking!
First interview out of college was in Marquette, took a job in NC instead, thank god, they said 250 inches of snow per year. I really don't like snow much.
6:32 Guy is so amazed about bikes :)
Gotta add that to my fatbiking bucket list.
The red Dolomite is not the same frame as the normal blue Dolomite kzread.infoUgkxTGiBQEtJDzdz-_LjtY9HyQZPzkg6s_L9 it seems to be a Hitch with Dolomite stickers and solid rims. This isn't an issue unless you are counting on the wider tire clearance of the original Dolomite. This can be hard to tell given the angle of the pics, especially on a smaller screen. The red version does have the welded seat lock of the newer Malus. If the red color is important and you're going to be doing the basic upgrades popularized on the biking forums and KZread; you would probably be better off buying a Hitch, getting the lighter wheels, and saving a little money. We ordered a blue and a red one and both of the bikes needed grease in the bottom brackets, hubs, and stems. No matter what, these are a great introduction to fat bikes and wrenching your own stuff at this price point.
We need that in Colorado.
