What did you think of the BS in IT program? How long did it take you?

Currently 1.5 months into my first term. I’m shooting for finishing 96 credits in 1 term. I am in this same program and ahead of my own schedule. I have earned my project+ and ITIL certs and going strong. BSIT is a perfect program that touches everything and gets you about 10 certifications. Very general degree that can land you a position in most areas IT related. You may or may not be crazy enough to try to get your degree in 1 term, but if you are able to really set your mind to it and endure a couple months of dedication and pain. The 4K for 1 term literally pays itself off just with the certifications alone within this program. That is why I chose it. It’s not easy but it’s possible.

Do you already have A+, Network+, or Security+? I just finished A+ and it took me about 6 weeks a piece. Granted I was working quite a bit on top of it. Still I wouldn't expect to pass any of those in less than 4-6 weeks and be able to understand and memorize the material.

Awesome video Josh. I'm about to be half way through my online cyber security degree program and I'm considering going this route because I'm kind of sick of school. Even though the classes are "accelerated" I can only really manage one at a time but hat's on me and my bad time management. I have 71 more credits to go/24 courses and this pathway seems pretty appealing.

@@cu806 WGU uses a competency based learning approach. Which means if you already know the material you can “test out” and pass the class. No need to spend weeks/months in a class you already have knowledge in. 13 classes in 2 terms is totally doable. 3 terms is more realistic, though.

My question is should I opt for BNOS or Gen IT , considering my GI Bill will pay for 3 years of school , but I do not come from a tech background. I applied for BNOS since it also had CCNA, but I'm hoping Im not in over my head.

Wow you're a corpsman, that's so cool! Just from eyeballing all of the degrees (I haven't done a proper analysis yet), not counting the development degrees, the BSNOS *potentially* is the most marketable because CCNA is so highly regarded as an entry-level cert. For me, certs provide either or both of the following: a) bypass for HR (can get you an interview) b) actionable knowledge (can help you pass an interview, and do well at work) CCNA scores REALLY highly in both of these areas. Of course the downside is that it is kind of difficult compared to most other certs at WGU, but not insurmountable. You can definitely finish the program in 3 years; whether or not that opportunity cost is worth it is kind of up to you. I'm not sure how much time you have, but I might recommend to just start studying for CCNA a little bit to see if you like it. I'd recommend getting a free trial from CBT nuggets for the CCNA course and going through as much as you can. (This course has REALLY good instructors!): www.cbtnuggets.com/it-training/cisco/ccna Having said all that, the General IT program is great if you aren't sure what you like yet. It's "easier" relative to most of the other degrees and will give you some decent certs as well. Hope this helps!

Hey Josh, great video as always! Quick question: For a Sr Security Engineer with over 5 years experience in the field looking to work their way to CISO level. Do you think getting a BSIT and then a MSCSIA at WGU is a good route? Or would a BSCSIA + MSCSIA be more effective? I’m considering the opportunity cost, and overall employability model you speak of. The reason is because they already have an Associates in IT and are able to transfer more credits to the BSIT and complete it faster. What was your experience dealing with the program mentors in regards to completing courses and requesting the next one? I have A+, Net+, Sec+ already, and wanted to blast through, but I am wary of a gatekeeper slowing my progress. What was the turn around time like? Hey! Thx for subbing! Absolutely, ccna is the "Main" cert for the BSNOS degree and can satisfy classes for several other programs as well. Since yoy already have CCNA, I might suggest you look into that degree (BSNOS), I even made a video on it :o). Imo, it's th most marketable degree! (I talk about this in a future video). Hey Josh, Thank you for your time. Quick question. Would pursuing IT management at WGU be worth it? I have an AA in IT and I feel like I could be able to obtain the degree rather fast. Ideally I would be using said degree for an HR hurdle climber. I already know I want to go for a networking / network security job role. However I was overwhelmed by the amount of certifications in my original path I took at WGU which was the Cyber Security role. I wish I had obtained the certs outside of WGU because I feel like certification tests apply too much stress to match the time line I am currently on. Which is an ASAP time line. I do plan on becoming certified regardless of pursuing a degree at WGU, I just didn't want a certification to determine my timeline for a degree.

Hey IcyWizard, gosh there are a lot of variables at play, but for someone who was intentionally accelerating, I would probably budget on average an extra term or so for the IT General and Data Degrees. If it were cloud/BSCSIA, I would say an extra 2 terms. BSNOS, 3 more terms. Hope this helps!

Hi! Nice vid btw! I appreciate your experiences and input on being as a student in WGU. However what do you think about WGU for students that just graduate from high school? I've been hearing that people just don't recommend it at all because you NEED work expierence (based off the degree you apply to) to get through these courses. I'm planning on applying for a BA cyber security degree, however hearing that people just don't reccomend applying to this school without work expierence is kind of demotivating me to attend. I would really appreciate it if I got input on this, and it would help me be more comfortable on deciding on other options besides WGU. Thanks!!

The degree selects for career changes but realistically provides beginner students with enough projects to get started. My two cents from having a kid (barely of age to attend) is make sure you brush up on soft skills and get connected with online or in person volunteering and work experience. It's harder because wgu doesn't provide students with services like a brick and mortar school but is entirely doable. Having met people who completed their degrees by force of their era at a brick and mortar college they would have loved to go the self paced route and cut away the butt in seat penalty time classes in exchange for more real world work experience. There is value in classical education if and when you are taught rhetoric, logic, and research skills but the reality is that the maturation and necessity of those skills only really comes when you have money and a career on the line. A Master's degree program might help you achieve the higher education goals but it's unfortunately not a guarantee. By default rhetoric and logic should be foundational courses alongside first year drafting and composition but very often it isn't. People assume you can make arguments but not that you should understand how arguments work. (This is a generalization, larger colleges are better than smaller ones at enforcing these conditions. ) How this circles back to wgu is that if you don't know what you want to do, taking classes at a community college is a better way than getting into an Ivy league with no choice but to either complete a degree without value or fail completely due to a lack of focus while also being saddled with huge debts. These schools are very generous as long as you continue your high GPA standards for scholarships but being put on probation means no scholarships, remedial classes, and guaranteed student debt far above what a wgu course costs. If partial self pacing isn't your thing and you want a line or line college syllabus course (which is the expectation but not a right.) In person college and butt in seat penalty time might be worth it. If you need business connections in a certain area, physical college might be worth it. So long as you don't pull a Katie Holmes, educated without true provenance or degree, it might be worth it. If you want the social experience and network of upper middle class to hyper elite gold spoon in mouth individuals private colleges might be worth it. (again only so much as you are social without being a money grubbing ass. Wealthy people are used to spotting it and will have the social skills and intellect to disconnect or their parents will do it for them. While you're screwed out of the social circle for being a jerk, they won't be and the real loser is you, both in social and face value.) Certain colleges will expand your oppourtunities but so will location, chance of internships and your desire to move where the jobs are in your field. He who has no friends has nothing and he who will not change his oppourtunities has even less.

Tldr; it still works. You're cutting down the butt in seat penalty time. All colleges vary at getting you real world experience and it's up to you to balance your social and educational opportunities accordingly. Just because a school has a building doesn't mean it has the social network/industry connections you need to succeed

Hi Josh! I have a question for you, I just enrolled in the General IT B.S degree program at WGU, I already have an A.A.S so that knocked off about 12-13 courses. Do you think it would take me long to finish the degree in the grand scheme of things with that many courses removed from the degree plan? including the certs I must take that are included with the degree?.

It really depends on how aggressive you are with completing the courses and the certs. I can tell you I don't regret getting my degree. My first was the BS IT General. If you are worried about time/difficulty, you can probably switch to BSITM if you want, but the certs in IT Gen are pretty nice :)

It depends on the university you are going. If you are going to WGU, I think you can make due with any bachelors. I'd strongly recommend it! I don't regret it. I can't find anywhere else that has a better value in terms of time, cost, and quality.

Do you think there's any value in the title of these degrees? I ask because I'm leaning towards cloud as a career goal, but the Network degree includes the CCNA which is something i plan to get anyway. Would the "Cloud" title be more valuable down the road than a slight head-start on the CCNA? Or, should i just not worry about specializations and stick with the general IT degree instead? And on another note, are internships viable when pursuing an online IT degree like this?

Hey Shadowcam! Some great questions you've asked! I'll give my opinions in-line below: _>Do you think there's any value in the title of these degrees?_ If we are talking "BS Computer Science" vs "BS Business", there is definitely more value in one of these than the other. If we are talking "BS IT Cloud" vs "BS IT Network Operations", there isn't going to be that much discrepancy between the two, if any. Within the realm of IT, just having a degree is _enough_, and is only one slice of the "pie" to get hired. (Other "slices" are, certification, experience, resume, interview capability, communication, etc.) _>Would the "Cloud" title be more valuable down the road than a slight head-start on the CCNA?_ In my opinion, not necessarily. The CCNA is one of the most marketable entry-level certs there is, period, and _THE MOST_ marketable cert offered at WGU. Also, the BSNOS degree is the most marketable IT degree that WGU offers, at least according to my metrics. Calculus is not often used lol. You'll find it in the 'hard' STEM degrees, like Computer Science, Computer Engineering, EE, maybe Chem E, Mech E, Physics, etc. But you won't find it in _ANY_ of the IT/Cyber degrees. If you do, the school is cringe tbh. I think it's good to have in Computer Science because it helps you REALLY understand rate of change and learning Calc increases your problem solving and ability to think about certain things. Learning calculus has a lot of intangible benefits and I'm glad I learned it--having said that, I don't feel it's necessary for _MOST_ tech jobs.

Thanks for again for your thoughts. I thought about the same things you just mentioned. Honestly my actually higher match skills just suck. So pre-cal and cal would just be an extremely hard class for me. My problem solving skills are great other than that. I just noticed that ALL the BS “cyber security “ degrees require calculus. But the AS for cyber that I am enrolled in does not.

Based off your opinion, which degree would you say has a higher earning potential for someone making a career change into this field? IT management or IT GENERAL?

Making a career change into IT, being brand new, definitely the IT General degree. Coming out of that degree, you're going to have a lot easier time getting interviews from the sheer amount of certs it has. However, it's up to you to pass the interviews ;). To make things a bit more tangible, take a look at this chart I made. It represents the "11 pillars" that represent things you need to get a job: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j84WO82c60T82jmMcXstVRDWcwIlk3WrmNkUYs0jKp0/edit#gid=736893856 The parts that are colored is what you can expect to have coming out of the WGU BS IT General degree. Then I kind of made notes at different levels for things you can do to "raise" those skills up in those areas. The reason I say BS IT General is better, is because you can imagine the IT management chart looking the same as above, but it won't have the "A-Tier" certs. The idea is to raise up these 11 areas to at least medium, though you can get away with some "Zero" or "c-tier" areas, as long as you are consistent with your application process and stronger in other areas. Hey bro one question what will you recommend to a experience professional with 5 yrs of experience as Security tester / VAPT / Pentester who is not an engineer nor an Bsc IT. He has a irrelevant degree so should he go for Masters or any degree into Cybersecurity or should he go for certs like OSCP, CISSP ,CISA , ISO lead Auditor, A+, N+ . What is the best choice here. I have many frnd including me who are not CS graduates or from IT background but they want to study further and are unable to get into university due to the commerce or arts background. Hey! It really depends on what you want to do. I opted to get a Masters degree just so I could "Check that box" on my resume. It's really nice to get those education items out of the way and not worry about them--especially if you already have a bunch of experience already. Once you do that, you can get any relevant certs that you want which will help you get to where you want to go. I generally prioritize like this Entry Level Certs -> Entry Experience -> BS Degree -> Mid-High Level Certs -> Mid Experience -> MS Degree -> Whatever else you want to do, haha. Sorry, this is really lofty, but I hope it helps :)

If someone knows they want to go into Cyber Security but they are new to IT would you recommend going with the IT general or just going for the Cyber Security degree even though it is more difficult?

This is kinda tough to answer, but the short answer is you can definitely succeed with both. I would just choose the degree that is most appealing to you. In my opinion, labs and personal projects weigh heavily on your employability when you're newly entering the cyber field. So whichever degree you get, you're probably going to have to do some kind of projects. Doing the Cyber degree will probably make this easier for you, but the caveat is, it will most likely take longer to complete. Myself, I actually went with the IT general degree (faster), then got security certs on the side and did projects and got in. But the cyber degree is dope, especially the new net eng sec degrees, those are cool too! Best of luck :)

It largely depends on so many factors such as where you live and the field and how good you present yourself in your resume and portfolio, etc etc, but I would expect 50-100k depending on the quality of these things. The degree itself doesn’t make you money, you use the degree to add value to the whole package that is yourself ^^

Both :), the class prepares you to pass the class. Then you need to pass the classes to get the degree!

Hey Yes, IMO, a masters degree is like "icing on the cake", and I would not have gotten one if I couldn't get it fast/cheap--WGU is perfect for this lol. So to answer your question, if you want to get a MS, WGU is probably one of the most economical choices. Just my opinion though :)

The fact that you are on KZread watching these videos and commenting AND worrying if you are good enough, is an indicator that you will do better than average if you were to jump in. If you apply yourself, you're gonna be totally fine! Also, you can code whereas half the people in this industry avoid coding like the plague for some reason, haha.

I'm curious why you ranked Software Development second most difficult when it has the second least amount of certifications after IT Management.

Great question! Because SD is conceptually more difficult than almost everything else and it can't be blizted if you are new to coding. If you are new, it will probably take longer to learn coding well enough to pass Software II vs doing all the certs from the other degrees, haha. Just my opinion though :)

Although being a SE is my long-term career goal, I know learning to code will take time and I really hate my current job. I want to break into tech as quickly as possible. Would you recommend that I go for it or keep focusing on SE if that is what I really want to do? I feel like I'd rather have the exposure of being in tech and working toward that goal from that role but I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

One big question I have about IT, How hard is it to do your job when you have to make all the different programs work together? Seems like endless frustration.

Well, no doubt there are SOME jobs that require a degree, but I'd like to think those are decreasing, since a degree requirement in this field doesn't make sense. My degrees definitely didn't hurt, but it's hard for me to measure where exactly they helped. I actually made a video that kinda touches on what you're talking about haha. Seeing the addition of the average hourly time investment per week/month might paint a clearer picture! It would certainly make sense if people that take certain degrees do so without as much time to invest in the classes.

The math required for the BSIT general degree is honestly not that bad, especially when you have free tools like Khan Academy at your disposal. you can probably take (and transfer in) equivalent courses from Study(.)com which will _possibly_ be even easier than the WGU courses.
