About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,500+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

When I was a child channel 9 was the station I watched on Sundays, The Cisco kid and the Lone Ranger in the morning Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chan at noon, and Fraser Thomas family classics would close the day out.

Same here, except I remember it being Charlie Chan AND Sherlock Holmes. I rushed through Sunday dinner (we were on the east coast) so I could claim the tv in the guest bedroom. Piling pillows around me and kicking back for a fun few hours before I had to start homework for Monday.

@@paultenant1692 I remember him and that show. I was around 5 years old and it was one of my favorite evening shows.
Thanks for the memories. This brings back so many Great memories, growing up.
Hearing the bumper music, Clif Mercer's voice, and the cover of "Groovin"...it puts a knot in my stomach. My God the flood of memories. The simple memories of childhood in NW Indiana.
I remember watching Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan every Sunday on WGN.Channel 9 in the 1970's and early 80's.Great memories
Growing up in Chicago. This movie intro, the memories... A simpler time. Some things were so unpredictable, one that was not was WGN 's "Groovin" opening to a Sherlock or Charlie movie on a Sunday afternoon.
I remember this old WGN-TV intro when i was younger. FYI: The tune used in the intro was an instrumental rendition of Spanky & Our Gang's "Groovin'".

Guy Azbell I agree. I believe people respected each other .
You'll be happy to know those Sherlock Holmes movies are on Sunday mornings on the MOVIES! Digital TV channel.
After church and Sunday school, breakfast in front of the T.V. watching a Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chan movie on Channel 9. Pancakes, eggs and bacon or sausage. That was our reward for being Good Catholics.
Television was more enjoyable back then.
Lovely clip, thanks for posting--also, that seems to be Rene Russo on the mascara ad

That was so cool ! I used to stay up so I could watch the sign off. Then, wake up early to watch the sign on. Do you have wild chicago promos sign on and off too ?
Nice intro, but too bad, the Universal "Glass Globe" logo was not shown.
Airdate? What holiday?

Air date indicates 1979, but no date given (obviously a Sunday.) Actual holiday remains a mystery. Any ideas? Thanks. Enjoy your channel and your posts.

Got it. Reading from smartphone, video description cuts off at "credits of movie..." Read from desktop, you get the whole description.
Why do you promote showing a movie ("Charlie Chan And The Feathered Serpent" & "Sherlock Holmes in The Pearl of Death") & DON'T show these old movies????
