WGN Channel 9 - Garfield Goose And Friends - "Christmas Gifts For Gar" (1971) 🎄 🎁 ❄️
Ойын-сауық
[newly remastered from original source recording]
Found on an ancient, open-reel black & white skip field recording that was donated to us along with a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff, and tucked away at the end of the reel, this gem was discovered - some footage from Garfield Goose and Friends on WGN Channel 9 from exactly 50 years ago to the month!! (originally broadcast in color, but captured on this early home videotape recorder in black and white)
As you may know, footage from this show is extremely rare. You can probably count on one hand all of the existing clips that survived.
It starts off with that familiar theme music playing (Ethel Smith's "Monkey on a String"). The opening lingers a bit longer than most of the other few examples that exist, and then, we see the rare "Created and Produced by Frazier Thomas" slide. Why was this removed at some point from the opening? Time constraints? Some other reason? Maybe someone out there has the answer.
We zoom into the still of the castle as Frazier Thomas goes through the mail with Gar and Romberg Rabbit.
Jenny Monaco, 5 years old, who attends Kindergarten at Washington Township School, and whose address was Rural Route 1 - Box 77 - Valparaiso, Indiana (amazing how they gave this info out over the air, even if it's only a PO box - a simpler time) - made and sent in a bunny rabbit out of cotton and matches for Gar.
Drew Bandusky of South Lavergne Avenue in Burbank, IL made and sent in a green knit pillow for Gar (his mother helped a little bit).
Greg Davidson of Hillside, IL made and sent a Christmas tree out of colored tissue paper. Don't hold it up to a candle! :-)
Gretchen Novak of West Chicago, IL made what looks like a wooden Mrs. Santa Claus ornament.
This aired on local Chicago TV in December of 1971.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: tapes@fuzzy.tv Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, please e-mail tapes@fuzzy.tv Thank you for your help!

I remembered this show. I looked a this show when I was a kid. It was the 1950s it was a lot of fun . I am 73 now and it was a good time to be a kid!!
I loved this show.
WGN had excellent Children’s programs! Great memories!
Chicago Avenue, between Laramie and Cicero. We watched this show each and every morning for breakfast. Before having to walk to Henry H. Nash School, 4837 W. Erie St. Chicago. Good times. Great memories. I never knew then, that it would ever end.
Great Memories
Oh. Such good memories
I still have my color Garfield Goose postcard (in a frame). It is probably 58 years old. I also had a Garfield Goose puppet with crown and loved that toy. Thanks for the memories!!!
I remember having a Garfield Goose puppet. But the crown was missing. I was so young, don't remember what happened to it.
Thanks for this precious upload. Great memories of wonderful times.
Watched Garfield Goose when i was a kid! loved the show.
I remember this being broadcast M-F, just before the evening news (Frasier Thomas came on just after the evening news on Fridays, with "Family Classics"). My brother and I watched Garfield, Rhomberg and Thomas in the early '60's, so this episode must have been late in the show's run. We never did see it in color!

Family Classics…now there’s a program than sparked good memories!
I just wish they would have preserved these old shows, rather than a few clips that people taped. Still something is better than nothing, but it would be great to see full shows in all their glory too!
What a great show I remember it well 5 pm every night when TV was good TV.
Wow! I love that video.
Great memories of Christmas past ❤
I was today years old when I found out the name of the theme song and who performed it!
I watched this every morning in the late 60s until the early 80s. Fraser Thomas was a remarkable guy if you really think about it. Sunday noon he’s dressed up in a suit and tie presenting Family Classics. Monday morning he’s in a goofy looking suit talking to puppets that didn’t even talk back.
WGN TV had some excellent local Children’s TV Shows in the 1960’s and 70’s!
Oh my goodness! I remember this! The gifts, how sweet!
Loves this show when I was a kid
I remember the Garfield Goose show on WGN at 5pm. Even though I was only 6 or 7 yrs old, it was great entertainment fo me. Imagine,---a goose who thought he was king of the United States! Lol 😆 🤣
Little girl from Valparaiso Indiana made a fire hazard!
One of my favorite Chicago kid shows from my past, Garfield Goose.
Watch Garfield before I went to school
This might be the highest-quality skip field footage I've ever seen. Which system was this specifically recorded on? I know many of the early Sony models lacked any sort of tracking control, so they can only be tolerably transferred with the original recording unit.
My childhood was rough and I am sure it is still for anyone trying to grow up. Frazier honored that without submitting to cynicism which is so dear to me. I'm 58 now and appreciate him more as an adult than I ever did or knew how to as a kid. You choose: The original Star Trek's vision of the future or the Walking Dead's version. Family Classics or Netflix? Garfield Goose, Looney Tunes, Peanuts, Ray Rayner or Cartoon Network? I still own a flip phone so you all know my choice.
So "Garfield & Friends" bit this show's title.
Honestly, this was a step down from Ray, though I did like the journey back in time episodes. "That's a brontosaurus, Billy."
😊
Half hour later all those hand made gifts from little children ended up in the dumpster behind the studio of Garfield The Goose and Friends. 🗑
