Wet-Breathing Regulator?

Спорт

Quick Tips is back! I got an email asking: what causes a wet-breathing second stage scuba regulator? Easier to show than tell...
Wet breathing regs can run from a minor annoyance to down-right dangerous. Most commonly, you'll see this in rental regulators, due to the large about on abuse they suffer day in, day out - just another great reason to buy your own dive gear!
If your reg is breathing wet, there is a good chance water is getting in one of three major places. And remember, if you are not skilled and confident to work on your own regulators, please take them to a professional service technician. The information in this video is meant purely for trivial means, not instructional!

Congrats on making a Quick tips video in under 5 minutes. All jokes aside, nice quick video on a topic that is simple to resolve....unless you have no idea where to start.

THANK YOU JAMES ! ! ! Yesterday I was shore diving about an hour south of Kona big island when my mouth totally filled with water at about 30 feet. I used my octo to ascend and surface swam back to shore. I remembered seeing this video and unscrewed the second stage cap but everything looked fine. I didn't even know the cap opened until you showed me. Then I peeked into the exhaust port and saw a tiny black pebble wedged under the diaphragm. I was so stoked to get to resume my dive. So was my dive buddy., it would have ruined our trip. You rock ! Aloha

I love when you take equipment apart. It appeals to the part of me that used to hang around in the physics department machine shop. It makes me happy to learn a little bit about how stuff works.

Once got a small stone in my exhaust valve. It was backup regulator, so it was on my neck and in one part of the cave bubbles from my buddy hit the ceiling and few little (~3mm) stones dropped. I didn't notice that one of them ended up in my backup second stage through the mouthpiece. When we practiced gas sharing, I switched to my backup and was a bit annoyed that a lot of water comes into 2nd stage... It was totally ok to breathe (because I was calm) but it was extremely annoying. On the surface I opened the cover and found that stone.

Did you know it could also be a first stage issue if you have o ring issues with first stage it sucks water in and pushes it to the second stage (din not A clamp) lol yes this can happen I had it happen to me turned out there was two orings stacked up inside my first stage

I was at Ginnie the other day, dude was taking Cave CCR and his Choptima was breathing wet, apparently the ADV diaphragm had a nick in it. The DR guys got him fixed up as apparently it shares the part with the older XT2 second stages.

I've had this problem a few times and it's been the exhaust valve each time. The giant stride can role the exhaust port in the octo and if you don't test your octo at the beginning of a dive, you could be handing a buddy a bad experience. I also had salt or some build up on my regular second stage and thoroughly flushing it while pressurized cleaned it out.

Very helpful, thank you. Do you or any of your listeners know what a potential culprit could be if there’s water ingress into the second stage only when I’m in a different position other than in the standard swimming position? Like when I look behind me to check on my buddy or when I look up towards the surface. Weirdly, this is the only time I’m noticing water in my second stage.

No, most work basically identical. One note though, the front cover is sometimes locked with a small pin or similar, so you’ll want to check for that.

Pretty sure when you put reg in “the ultrasonic” you meant just on the heated mode, not with the ultrasonics on. Ultrasonics can really ruin plastic components. Outstanding video though.
