Western Tennessee Tornado - 12/10/21

Ғылым және технология

Raw video from Gibson Co., TN of the EF-3 Newbern (TN)-Dresden (TN)- Elkton (KY) Tornado on the evening of 12/10/21.
This tornado was on the ground for 122.7 miles before dissipating over Kentucky and a short while later, spawning a 3rd tornado that struck Bowling Green.
The tornado was 2/3 of a mile wide at its maximum width and had winds estimated at 160-170 MPH.
This video was captured from our dash cam around 11 pm CST along US-45W near Dyer, TN looking North as the tornado passed through Kenton, TN.
The tornado enters the left frame after the 8:00 mark and crosses through the 14:00 mark. The storm was rain-wrapped at this time and it was only when we reviewed this video frame-by-frame and watched the lightning from the various angles that we were able to actually see the tornado beyond confirmation from radar ahnd from damage reports

At the 15:30 mark the radio tower beacon on the RH side of the screen stops working as well as a small building/street light off in the distance on the LH side of the screen. At night its difficult to know where a Tornado is at, when the power goes out all around you that is a pretty good indication it is close.

The tornado starts coming into the frame at left and crosses to the right over the next few minutes. You can only see it by lightning and it was also rain-wrapped, so it’s hard to see in the video unless you know what you’re looking for. We were able to slow it up frame by frame though and get some awesome screen grabs.

Let me correct the timing from my comment above after going in and looking at the timing on the YT video. It enters left frame around the 8:00 mark and exits right around 14:00. Sorry, the video was trimmed down from a 30 min video and I had to translate the timing from when I first went through the original video.

Question, do Storm Chasers use Night Vision Goggles for times like this? I'd hate to be out at night looking for a tornado and not be able to see it!

I never have heard of it if anyone does, but Im not too sure how practical it would be. As you can see from the video, its already difficult because when you’re chasing or spotting at night, you’re relying on the lightning (which has to be at the right angle) or power flashes, and then using radar to know where to be watching too. If it’s rain-wrapped, that makes it even more difficult if not impossible. With that said, there has been an app that has come out in recent years for storm chasers that is supposed to be able to use certain specialized “filters” I guess you would call them to help you spot tornadoes using the cell camera.

@@TheHaydenator I've personally used NV Goggles during cloud covered/darkness and I would bet apple's to oranges that you could easily see the funnel against the other clouds. Maybe see if one of the night vision video cameras could be useful in such a situation!
