I have been a locomotive engineer for thirty years now. I would love to have a chance to get behind the throttle of a steamer just once...It's a machine that is alive.....I am fourth gen railroader and I remember my grandad talk about being on steam when he started on the Santa Fe. I wish I could have talked to my great grandad but he passed before I was born...He also worked the Santa Fe out of Topeka...My father was Santa Fe as well as myself..I hired out of San Bernardino on the prior Santa Fe in 1990....Great vid..Thanks for bringing me along. High Ball.......

@@fuscoproductions Even with the mechanical stoker you still have to manually fire the corners and correct any uneven spots. The stoker just moves the bulk of the tonnage so you aren't bending your back quite so much. And of course a fireman so inclined could set it to low or turn it off and fire by hand.

In this video, 734 is wearing an authentic Western Maryland 5-chime, which is a “short-bell” whistle hence the relatively high pitch. 734 typically carried some variant of a very low pitched Hancock 3-chime “long-bell” through most of its career on the WMSR, so this whistle definitely stands out.

Sort of wishing the Steam Railroading Institute here in Michigan would have made an offer on it, rather than doing a full restoration of the formerly abandoned CNW 175, especially since it already looks quite similar to a Pere Marquette consolidation in its WM configuration.

Last I heard anything from the grapevine, when they got 1309 out of the shop and brought 734 in for a turn they found she was in rough shape from years of hard use. Maybe one day it will run again, but it is going to be a pretty involved repair to correct things that are breaking down in ways they shouldn't be breaking.
