It's amazing how speaker systems like this can sound so amazing with such limited high-frequency extension... I mean, I bet those horns barely crack the 10khz barrier, and yet listen to that glorious sound... I have a pair of British speakers from 1963 with very-large, ported Marshall-4x12-sized cabs... Alnico cone drivers throughout... Dual 12" woofers... And I wouldn't want anything else for '60's music and early '70's music... Once you've heard that kind of music done right, you'll find that modern speakers just aren't the same for it... With the proper vintage speakers, you can get the same joy from Sinatra as you would from the Stones... Jensen made some righteous speakers back in their (and obviously Western Electric needs no introduction)... I'm a vintage Wharfedale guy myself... My search pretty much ended with the original, ported, all-alnico W90... Perfect for music from that era, be it some old blues, classic rock/pop, funk, psychedelic stuff, country, etc... Western Electric/Altec and certain others were industry leaders when it came to horn-loaded speaker systems... Wharfedale, on the other hand, used all cone-type drivers back in the day, and they stuck with them up until around 1968 when they finally replaced their high-end cone-tweeter with a mylar one that was somewhat similar to what Advent and Acoustic Research were doing, but prior to that point, Wharfedale made the best cone tweeters in the business... My W90's each have two of their top-of-the-line cone tweeters per cab, and it's a hell of a sound.

Plus music of that era 1930's up through 1980 or so, I think they composed and though of it in terms of lushness. Those good speakers of the era, really brought out the full surround sound lushness of that eras music. (oh I didn't mean to exclude the lushness of the previous 1000 years of classical music - can't get much more lush than a cathedral or an opera house).

The best of the past are still excellent . The all-important midrange they reproduce better than many modern speakers . And there are some amazing new speakers .

How much of that stuff was junked in the 70's? I remember in the earliest 70's as kid finding all kinds of things at thrift stores made in the 20's -50's. Now its valuable. Too bad I tossed out almost all by the 2000's.

I can't stand it anymore!! So many of you audiophiles are posting videos of your high-end equipment (which is very impressive) but you consistently position the stereo speakers within close proximity to one another. Do you have an awareness of the concepts of sound stage and imaging? Hell, you'd might as well be listening to a monophonic recording. For the love of God, try putting your gear in a wider room, move the damned loudspeakers further away from each other and park your ass in the middle!

This is from an audio show, so they're in hotel rooms and the presenters of the speakers are kind of stuck with the room they are given. Not sure how much further apart they can get in this room. You can get good sound stage and imaging in a smaller room, but clearly bigger room is better in most cases. The room acoustics are so important as you said. Sometimes people are just stuck with the room they have. There are Japanese audiophiles who make a listening room in their small Tokyo apartments, sometimes you just have to deal with what you have. I do agree speaker placement and room acoustics are so important and often audio nerds won't take this into account. But, there are ways to get good imaging and decent sound stage in a smaller room.
