Western defence spending essential to defeat ‘autocratic tyrant’ Putin | Hamish de Bretton-Gordon

“Come November people are not be going to the election booths, they are actually going to the recruiting centres. Because if things go badly we could be involved in a war with Russia”.
UK defence spending is crucial because Putin is an “autocratic tyrant” and “putting everything into his armaments” says former army officer and chemical weapons expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon

    She's a Russian plant, how can she sit there and think, there will not be a war if we don't stop Putin What she fails to realise is, China is also watching, because if Putin wins, this will encourage China to invade Taiwan, then the West will have too massive countries with unspeakable military resources attacking their friends, and they will have no other option but to respond militarily to keep the peace

    It's clear that Grace did not grow up in the shadow of a world war. She didn't see the effect on her father who served, her mother who never saw her big brother again, or a grandmother who never came to terms of the loss of her oldest son on Iwo Jima. Without a strong defense, a nation leaves itself vulnerable. A well defended nation makes enemies think twice

Putin found new markets for his fossil fuels some time ago and Britain ‘decarbonising’ won’t have the slightest impact on anything. Grace lives in a land of make believe precisely because she has not been exposed to the brutal realities of geopolitics and life beyond the comfortable, likely privileged, liberal bubble she evidently inhabits. To utter the word ‘decarbonisation’ in response to the question ‘how are we going to deter Putin from further aggression in Europe in the next several years’ was one of the daftest things I’ve heard from an ‘expert’ in years!

    Where did you find Grace? I am actually shocked at the level of her ignorance. This woman must have slept through every one of her modern history classes in school. The purpose of a strong defense is not to seek war but to prevent it. The British Military has been absolutely gutted over the past 30 years to subsidize social welfare programs but none of this matters if you can’t maintain the peace. Does she think that Ukrainian social welfare program expenditures were part of Putin’s calculus when he decided to invade that country? We can learn lessons from Ukraine, specifically that it is far more difficult to establish a military, procure hardware and supply chains after you have been invaded than it is to do so before a war. The cost to society in terms of lives lost and damage to the economy has been tragic in Ukraine.

    YES absolutely you have just 12 frigates the UK thats the same number as Canada !!!!! compare the Candian Navy to the UK navy from 1960-1990 the Uk would of been light years ahead in numbers and firepower !!!!!. just 6 destroyers in the Uk navy vs China now that has almost 50 and growing. Yes the US has 90 but they have not grown at all for 50 years in naval power where China is getting heaps stronger every decade .

    Dangerous mix of arrogance and ignorance displayed in full by Grace, who belongs to the Jeremy Corbyn school of geopolitics. It wasn't a "fascinating" viewpoint from her, but utterly bereft of any understanding of a grown-up and carefully considered worldview. I have a question for Times Radio: who picked her for this utterly pointless interview?

    Grace is your typical "activist" individual who has absolutely no idea about what she's talking about, but has a strong opinion on the matter and wants to defend it. "Decarbonization", every time I hear one of those clowns talk about decarbonization, I ask them about the myriad of industrial processes which cannot "all of a sudden" become electric, and tied to a solar panel. I ask them precisely what alternatives there are. Or more simply, air travel. Shall we stop it? Are these activists going to make electric planes that actually work ? And electric cars, do they have any clue what kinds of logistic and technological challenges companies like Tesla are facing? How about the lack of charging infrastructure? How about the fact that the same clowns were protesting nuclear power, which led Germany to shut down all of them (probably the single stupidest political act in Europe in the last 50 years, when it comes to energy). They are absolutely clueless. She thinks Putler is going to stop a massive war because he won't be able to sell oil to the West? Seriously? I think we found Napoleon reincarnate.

    That woman has no idea what she is talking about.... The uk is spending almost nothing... during the cold war they were spending up to 10% GDP on the military , its only 2.5% now... in war time like Ukraine now it goes way up to 40%... so even if the Uk spent 3% is still hardly anything compared to what they were spending in the 60s 70s etc.... there army air force and navy is half the size of what it was in 1990 during the Gulf war...they only have 40% more ship numbers than Australia yet in 1940 that would of been 1000% more. She clearly does not understand the concept if a strong miliitary makes a country safer and saves money.... look at Poland they know what is going on and they have the best Army in NATO now not including the US, these new age art type people live in a bubble , when war comes to them they cry for there mummy or GOV and blame everyone else yet there the ones that dont like spending... we have them in AUS too the greens party... they think diplomacy can prevent war... yeah giving up half your country for free great idea NOT

  • @34reload
    @34reload10 күн бұрын

    I dont feel Grace has any idea. 2.5% of GDP is simply not enough, solid and bold action needs to be taken now with regards to upgrading and enhancing our military capabilities, and drip feeding the increase over 6 years is simply not recognising the threat - as Grace is clearly not also. Defence costs money, a lot of it, and the only way to beat a bully is to stand up to them, if you dont, then it wont matter how long the NHS waiting list is. Nobody wants war with Russia, but that won't stop it coming if Putin decides he wants it. Action is needed today, not in 2030

    I am sure there were British people who said the same thing when the German dictator was expanding Germany just before WW2 started. "We have better ways to spend our money than on the military. Have tried all the peaceful and cheaper options to avoid war? Can't we just give him Denmark and hope that is enough?". Then when the German bombers started leveling parts of London, these same people probably said, "What do you mean we don't have enough fighters to stop this?". The only positive thing I can say about Grace's comments is that she was polite and respectful of what Hamish was saying, as was he when she responded. It is really unfortunate when you have a neighbor like Russia, but when you do, you either spend the money and effort necessary to handle Russia or Russia will spend the money and effort needed to handle you.

    Both of these commentators are correct. The military perspective addresses the clear and present dangers in which we find ourselves. The use of alternative energy sources in developed countries should be a long term goal in degrading Putin’s industrious military complex. However dictators like Putin are opportunistic and will seize power before the long term goals of alternative energies can even be achieved.
