The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) was built in the 1970’s when my parents were in school at WVU, which has two campuses across the town. It is mostly used by students to go between both campuses. I never had to take it when I was in school as all of my stuff was in the downtown campus. My dad took it regularly because he lived downtown but was in engineering school.
@ShadoeLandman
Жыл бұрын
When I went to WVU, it was considered four campuses: downtown, engineering, medical, and law, but none of them are so far apart from the rest to really need to be called another campus, and there are other buildings scattered between them, so I guess it's mostly a matter of the branding at the time.

Seems like something out of a parallel universe. 😄 Wish such a transportation method was used more often.
Yes, He turned into a fish in Mr. Limpet. Ghost and Mr. Chicken is a delightful film. I would highly recommend it.
"Take me Home, Country Roads" was originally written and composed by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert of the Starland Vocal Band. John Denver heard it and wanted it, prompting them to not sell the song to Johnny Cash. Denver them worked with them writing the bridge to the song and included locations from Virginia in the song.
That Rockafire Explosion looks much better than the last time I saw footage of it. Whatever restorations they have done really made a difference.
I live on a property right on the Shenandoah River and can see the Blue ridge Mountains from my window. I live in Virginia, so yes, your conclusion about the song lyrics are correct.
You do need to check out the movie The Ghost and Mr. Chicken!!! It is a total classic. Our family saw it at the drive-in around 1965 when I was a young kid cuz my Dad loved Don Knots n Andy Griffith so much so we had to see the movie when it first came out!!! Saw it many times since n it still holds up to this day!!! The phrase Attaboy, Luther came from this movie, cuz there was always a dude in the crowd whenever they met for a town decision that said Attaboy- n Luther aka Don Knots, was voted to go into the towns local murder/haunted house where they could see the organ keys playing themselves n still see the blood stains from the murderers hands on the keys, though they tried to clean them "And they used Bon Ami"" a cleanser that professed to clean away ANY stubborn stain no matter what, thus the creepy haunting of the blood on the keys keeping on returning!!! Bothe phrases were began and still very popular in my generation that's left today, cuz the movie was THE must see back then!!!! " Luther kept going in to the house no matter how he was chased out to write an article for the paper, hence, Attaboy, Luther!!!Never say die!!! I still use Attaboy to this day when complimenting someone's tenacity, like I do to you, Carpetbagger!!!! Yes, "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" is when Don Knots turns into a fish due to his love of fish. Another excellent one that UTube puts on free every so often which is excellent is "The Shakiest Gun In The West", in which he is a dentist going West to help people out there who have no dentists or doctors yet, n he gets shotgun weddinged to a government agent who is gorgeous to try n catch gun runners supplying the Indians, n he is a riot!!! "The Apple Dumplings Gang is another classic Western comedy as well.
The monorail system's like that one, and the people mover in Detroit are practical for inner city travel, but not very good for longer distances due to slower speeds. Thier slower speeds are due to a lack of a driver, and if memory serves correct, the electric rail system is also currently limited. The String is a parody of an old movie called The Sting.
Billy Bob's being empty, makes me sad. When I was a kid, growing up in the 80's, I would have loved a place like that.
"It was really warm almost in the sixties, and now it's dropped back down and we got snow." Yup, that's literally Pittsburgh in a nutshell.
Billy Bobs Wonderland was unexpectedly creepy in the best way. The fact it was so empty. The fact the animatronics worked SO WELL, and the fact that they had FNAF pinned up on that door for some reason. The arcade was weirdly unsettling as well. The monorail was also delightful. I’m glad you’re having more fun on the road trip now Jacob!

Its a disgrace that they are doing that… The Rockafire Explosion shouldnt be associated with fnaf, because fnaf essentially RUINS the image of The Rockafire Explosion. Fnaf has murderous robots walking around thanks to dead children possessing them. The Rockafire Explosion is a TRUE animatronic band, as it runs on air cylinders, valves, hinges, playback boards, and a reel to reel tape deck. They dont murder people and never will…
To me, “Country Roads” is a song sung while he’s driving trying to get home. So maybe he’s driving through West Virginia trying to reach original recipe Virginia…that’s why it’s almost heaven. Or the other way around…driving through the Blue Ridge mountains, across the river to reach West Virginia. Hahaha…I’m thinking way too much about this. Thanks 😊
I am from Morgantown WV and it is pronounced Morgan (town). This prt was built to get students from one part of campus to the other.

Yes that was the fish he turned into in the Incredible Mr Limpet!
I had a Mitsy mouse doll when I was a kid. It was called Show Biz Pizza. Hearing her sing Olivia Newton John made my day. 😂
The free road maps are the best!! I've an archive of maps from all our road trips.
If you ride a monorail you better have a damn good conductor.
50 cents a ride? I'd be riding that monorail every day just for the heck of it. What a cool town!
Jacob ~ thank you for being a lovely person.
I'm 42 and that musical ferris wheel has been in service at Billy Bob's since I was a youngster
The song originally was to be about Maryland but the writers decided name wouldn't work so they chose West Virginia. They had never be to West Virginia so I assume they thought the two locations you mentioned were in West Virginia. So the song is about West Virginia even if the locations are in a different state.
Mom statue looks really stressed. Shakiest Gun In the West is a fun movie too.
We visited friends in WV for the holidays and learned of Billy Bob's Wonderland from your previous videos. It was amazing to see the Rock-afire Explosion in person and introduce our 11yo daughter to them! Totally underappreciated attraction, we bought lots of merch to help support them.

Theres many sayings for feeling really happy but today theres a new one, as Happy as a Carpetbagger on a Monorail. It's another odd Fallout feel for me as I'd tried out 76 back around Halloween and its fun clicking the ingame with the real world counterparts, the University acctually uses the same colours as its ingame counterpart which was taken over by Vault tec.
Not a Monorail. This is a people mover. Very different systems
As a kid I used to love hoarding those tourist pamphlets too, just loved reading about all the fun things there was to do.
Yes Jacob, The Incredible Mr. Limpet has Don Knotts turned into a fish after he made a wish that he was a fish
There’s something rustic about visiting West Virginia that I love. Glad that you were able to stop there despite it never winning the poll
That Personal Rapid Transit "Morgantown MonoRail" looks like something out of a parallel timeline. One where, instead of everyone owning their own car, "peoplemovers" became a popular, everyday mode of city transportation. I can imagine a parallel universe where such a thing exists. You must've felt like you were dropped smack dab in the middle of one riding that thing.

Hello Jacob. It's awesome that you vlog all of your travels around the states.
I love seeing all the lesser known roadside attractions and small towns in your videos, you are definitely one of my favorite KZread creators!
I love how even though Chuck-E-Cheeze was the supposedly 'successful' part of those two franchises, Rock-afire Explosion kind of ended up being the more cult success of the two having had a movie about people's obsession about it and it ending up performing with Cee Lo Green. I also LOVE that a few years ago that NIN fans put a bid in to have the creator of Rock-afire Explosion do a NIN song with them: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJaisJiKncfYeJc.html
Hoping you'll allow me the liberty of a small elaboration: Bernard Coffindaffer is buried in Craigsville, Nicholas County, West Virginia (his place of birth) at the West Virginia memorial gardens. i really loved and wondered on this documentation of West Virginia, and learned a lot. Well done, Jacob.

There's so much to do and see in Nashville. Make sure you visit RCA Studio B. Birthplace of the "Nashville sound" and "home of 1000 hits" this is the studio where Elvis, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Jim Reeves and Dolly Parton and many other well-known artists recorded their hits.
thank you , the time, effort, stories and work you put into your videos are very much appreciated i get to see the country because of you, take care

You have to watch “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken!” One of my favorite movies as a kid! 😂 West Virginia is beautiful. I love that it still bares its historic appearance and no one has tried to change it too much.
I had read that John Denver had never even been to West Virginia when he wrote the song. My impression of West Virginia after having been there several times is that it's full of dilapidated towns in spectacular settings.
Awesome video Jacob! I love West Virginia! One of my favorite states to visit. Very beautiful state
I lived about an hour from Morgantown (pronounced Morgan Town) for 14 years. My brother studied puppetry at WVU and used the PRT at least twice a day.

One of the best welcome centers that I have ever been to is the Merrimack in Southern West Virginia. Right before you go into Virginia you need to check it out. They have very good food. You can get all kinds of souvenirs, but it's by far the best I've seen on the east coast.

I still always love when you say ‘follow me’
It’s nice see the rock-afire-explosion are back in good condition from the last time we saw them. Who ever recondition them did an amazing job! I would love to go and see them in person on day :)
I’m glad you saw the Don Knotts statue. You were definitely right about the incredible Mr Limpet. The movie was partly animated. Another interesting fact about Don Knotts is that he was very hypochondriac
I am happy that they have fixed the Rock-a-Fire place up a bit, and fixed up and replaced the falling apart Rock-a-Fire animatronics as well. And I like the stuff you showed to us, as you traveled down the road too. And in getting a Flat Woods Monster lamp too!
The Ghost and Mr Chicken is one of the FUNNIEST movies I have ever seen! A lot of the cast from Andy Griffith is also in the movie. Andy had a lot to do with it getting made. Also check out the Reluctant Astronaut with Don Knotts, as well as some of the Don Knotts & Tim Conway collaborations.
The movie that was called the sting, was a play on the movie The Sting staring Paul Newman and Robert Redford back in the 70's
We were in Morgantown for my husband’s neurologist appointment while you were there! We love your videos and it would have absolutely made our day to have met you.
You should vist Mnt Airy NC and look at the Andy Griffith museum and the town it’s really cool
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is a fantastic movie. 10/10!
Great video as always! Thanks so much Jacob and enjoy your adventures ahead. All the best.
The Harrison Power Plant (behind Charlie the Coal Miner) is a Coal fired plant. Cooling towers are cooling towers. They aren't necessarily only for nuclear power. Love your videos!.
I didn't know that Morgantown WV has a monorail, very cool!
Bagger at his best. I've said it before, while a big haunt or theme park or what have you is always great, Jacob is never more entertaining than when he is poking around the back roads, sifting through the mundane to find the wonderful. Also, shout out to the monorail phone guy, the newest viral celebrity.
Fun fact my nephew created the app for this monorail system so students at WVU can see its location on campus. If you are headed back through Huntington WV check out the Heritage Farms museum and Museum of Radio and Technology. The radio museum is my dad's baby and free to the public. Our state museum is top-notch and free as well.
My friend, Jamie Lester, made the Don Knotts statue as well as others in Morgantown such as basketball legends Jerry West and “Hot Rod” Hundley. Jamie also created the “tails” side of the West Virginia state quarter with the New River Gorge Bridge. Jamie owns and operates Vandalia Bronze in Morgantown. He’s a native of Oceana in Wyoming County, WV. The brochures you showed are from my current town of Beckley. The exhibition coal mine is a pretty cool place to visit. Love your channel, man!

The PRT looks like a Lego toy. Very cool!
The PRT is a fascinating bit of history. Tom Scot has made a video about it a while back. It's not been that long ago that it still ran on some original parts from back in the day. Interestingly the cars used to be entirely at the whim of the track communicating its will through sets of tone-generating antennae on the track to the car, rather than being smart themselves (things like speed up/down, switch here, open/close doors).
