Great Video, who doesn't love Wendy's.

Damn
Dave Thomas was a genius with the chili , he always used fresh beef but because he didn’t always sell them his waste cost was stacking up. So because he refused to freeze them to reuse for the next day, he came up with chili to use the fresh burgers but in chili so he had almost no waste. Another fun fact he also started out working with kfc founder col. sanders and the design for the chicken bucket was Dave’s idea also.

Dave sure was a genius, still love the phrase "Where's the Beef?" they used in their old ads!

@@prowrestlingisart6742 yeah, he was a definite pioneer he also did the First Pick-Up Window. “ Wendy's introduced the first modern drive through to the world; what Dave Thomas coined the “Pick-Up Window”. This innovation was so revolutionary that customers needed instructions on how to talk through the speaker to place an order.”

@@truckermatt4603 i’m learning a lot today! His creativity was constant. Makes sense why he eventually branched off and started his own restaurant. He certainly was an innovator. Maybe that’s why they called the burger the baconator.

I wish to god they'd sell that chili canned in the grocery (like lots of restaurants do these days). Obvsly it wouldn't have the toppings served on top like the cheese or onions, etc. But man, just the most-complete they could make it in a can would be insane.
I worked at Wendys from 89 till 91. They had fried chicken for awhile. I loved the old tables with the ads. I would take orange soda and mix it with the frosty.
I believe Dave Thomas and wife adopted Wendy-that’s why Wendy’s sell tags for free Frosties To benefit adoption charities!

Dave Thomas was actually adopted 😁. Pretty cool
Thank you Jenn for saving the day by lending Jacob your car
Hi Jacob, I might be one of your older followers, but I believe the hamburger patties are square because Wendy’s never cut corners.
Dave Thomas actually served my cousin 😂 he was just sitting there and all the sudden somebody tapped him on the shoulder and gave him his burger and it was Dave
My dad met dave thomas and even went into his office. He had a frosty machine in it.
"Columbus ... I can't believe I'm still in Columbus." There should be a Carpetbagger Ohio Pilgrimage where we strap on Crocs and visit all the places on your journey. All Hail the Carpetbagger!
I'm sorry you got stuck in my city, but glad you made the most of it!
Hey Jacob! I must of just missed you this weekend I was in that Wendy’s doing a video on Dave Thomas as well!
You are spinning gold out of the straw of this situation. Thank you for showing us the rabbit sculpture and the projection at the convention center. It must have looked amazing in person. Okay, positive thoughts for today. Hope it goes well.
Also the square patties are because at Wendy's, they don't cut corners. It's an homage to the whole "quality is our recipe" thing. I used to work for Wendy's and overall loved my time with the company. The people were all great. I even got one of Dave's books for free! Still have it. This was super great to see. I hope to visit here one day.

I always assumed it's faster and more accurate: Take an amount of hamburger meat, smoosh it out evenly over a rectangular pan, then slice it out into even squares?

@@hw2577 true, but they came up with a creative marketing slogan when people questioned the square patties.
Great message Jacob - kindness and understanding goes a long way. Keep staying positive!
According to the company’s history. the patties are square because Dave Thomas wanted to make his burger distinctive compared to Wendy’s competitors, so he used fresh meat formed into a square. Also, the corners of Wendy’s burgers hang over the buns. Thomas believed that allowed, customers to see the quality of the burger.

And there's no wasted space in this boxes...
I remember when I was younger Dave Thomas explanation for square burgers on the commercial was " because at Wendy's we don't cut any corners". Also they have the taco salad again. And yes I remember the buffet at Wendy's it had chili and baked potatos on it too. At least in our city
The rabbit sculpture is a sprinkler type thing in the summer for kids to play in.
Thanks for the video. Dave Thomas was a good man, he lived what he said. He didn't like to cut corners with his burgers either 😁. Hoping things worked out today with the rental car!
The escalator race was just what I needed today. Thanks for entertaining me Jacob.
I can confirm, I used to be a sit-down restaurant manager for ten years and you do find work sight tools on cooks lines, we would use a paint scraper for cleaning the flat top grills (ofc this was a brand new one), but some times work sight tools juat work better in the kitchen
I realize this is not your normal content but i find myself racing home from work to see what the latest is w you. So keep up the good work? 🤷🏼♀️
On Wendy's collar it reads "MoM" 🤗 I also still have a Clara Peller "Where's the beef" washrag of all things! 🤣
Cornhenge is one of a kind. Lived in Columbus on and off for over 32YRS have driven by it 1000.s of times and still look at it. Added note Dave Thomas was a HUGE SUPPORTER FOR ADOPTION, GOOD MAN.
Apparently the burgers are square because “he didn’t want to cut corners”
In South Florida not only did they have the salad bar, they also had a breakfast buffet on weekends. BTW, it's my understanding that the reason for the square burgers is Dave Thomas found that you could cook more burgers on the griddle square than round.
You're doing absolutely great through these extraordinary circumstances. I think we're all very proud of you!
Thank you Jen for saving the day and I'm glad you ok Jacob
Yea, they used to have a buffet and it was delicious! I don’t remember if there was hot food at the salad bar tho 😊

An empty convention centet definitely counts as a liminal space. It's really cool of you to keep finding things to film and upload daily despite your situation, and to be so open with us about it the way you have. Some on the platform would try to milk this by being over-dramatic, or (understandably) stop uploading, but you're being real with us and keeping things going, and I respect that immensely.
You are making the best of a tough situation. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It reminds me that life isn't always as we plan, but we can have a good attitude about it

Today's Tuesday so I hope all went well with your rental car; I'm glad Jen was able to get there & keep you company; You do seem a lot less stressed since she's been there!

Loved the escalator race, Jacob. Always finding ways to entertain yourself.
Haven’t been to Wendy’s in many many years. I forgot it was fresh meat. Makes me want to give it a try again. Taco salad was great! Loved you could get the 1/2 size too.
I have memories of going to Saturday art school at CCAD in downtown Columbus then heading across the street to eat at the original Wendy's on East Broad St. I remember the burger patties were hand-formed and hung over the bun. So good! Thanks for sharing!
Carpetbagger, you are the KING of coming up with great stories to share with us! We got your back no matter what you do! Now it’s time for me to go and get dinner. I think I will get some … Wendy’s!
When I moved to central Ohio in the mid 90s we still had the ORIGINAL Wendys downtown on Broad St and it still had that old school look to it. One of my all time favorite fast food growing up and I miss Dave and Clara Peller in those classic commercials.
17.04 that was the cheeriest rendition of a Korn song I've ever heard
Thanks Carpetbagger! I bought Starry at our local Fred Meyer and didn’t realize it was replacing Sierra Mist! 🤣👍
I worked at Wendy's for 2+ years and yes, the chili is made of old burger meat. Once the burgers have been sitting for a while and they can no longer be served, you toss them in a hot drawer to chop them up later to eventually be used in the chili (up to seven days in the future lol).
I have to admit, I feel spoiled with all these Columbus videos, it's a city that I love. Dave Thomas always makes me think of adoption. Safe travels my friend.
Jacob, thank you for sharing your videos! My fiance and I bonded over your videos during the pandemic, and following your road trips let us escape lockdown. You're a digital road trip buddy and we adore you! Cheers!
There's a BBQ place in my hometown that bought all the old Wendy's furniture when it remodeled and uses it still today. It's at least 30 or 40yrs old.
That face scan thing is fun. I know it’s active during the Arnold expo, I was working the expo and did it. Pretty cool.
Yes Wendy's had a hot food buffet. It was called Super Bar. I grew up in Kansas in the late 80s and early 90s and my mom took me there all the time.
Those rabbits give me Watership down vibes!😎😳
you singing Korn in that happy little voice was the funniest thing I've ever heard, I died laughing!!!
I live here in Columbus. We used to go to WWF wrestling at the Convention center back in the 80s! We saw Hulk, Andre the giant, and a bunch of wrestling stars at the time. Great memories. Hope all works out with your car situation. Keep your chin up. Safe travels. 🙏🙏
I'm from Columbus. If you end up sticking around, check out the Columbus Zoo.
My favorite thing at Wendy’s when I was younger was the breadsticks that you would get with the salads
I hope today was better for you! Please invest in a spa day for you and Jen after this trip if that is in your budget/ if you would enjoy it!
Yeah, when rear doors are binding on fenders attached to the rear hatch frame, it's a safe bet there is some major frame crunching ($5,750 IMHO). Also, if you can't close the hatch, exhaust fumes can get into the passenger compartment. That's why there are always air dams or spoilers near the rear hatch. Dave Thomas, big on adoptions. Everyone should always use the stairs where possible. Listen to me now and hear me later, Columbus, interesting place to be "stranded".
This turned out to be a great episode -- covering various things of pop culture: Wendy's, Ohio history, incidentally indirect reference to Chinese New Year (Year of the Rabbit), MLK, Pepsi's rebranded beverage to compete against Sprite, and Arnold Schwarzenegger!
I remember Claire Pela and the Wendy’s commercials. Loved the lady.

Loved the table! I may have sat at that one back in the 70's. We used to read all the ads on the table
Yes they had a salad bar and I loved it. Not only did it have shredded cheese and cherry tomatoes but other things too, there was also cottage cheese and peaches that were really good together. It was also a make your own burrito and taco station with everything needed for only 3 or 4 $, the 90s were a different time...
The Columbus adventures continue... It's actually amazing how many things you can find to see and do when you're stuck in one place for a while.
Whenever you are finally able to leave Ohio, you should make merch that says "I survived Ohio!" 🤣🤣 But seriously, I hope all goes well with your transportation issues, and I'm glad to still see these videos! Great work as always!
That Wendy's museum is Great and the food looks absolutely delicious. I haven't had Wendy's in a while.
I also worked at Wendy’s for a week, terrible experience. One of the managers identity theifed me 😅 I very much enjoyed your rendition of Freak on a Leash!!
Safe travels Jacob. It will get better down the road. Look forward to seeing more of your road trip.
The reason for the outlier four-sided shape can be traced back to Wendy's founder Dave Thomas. In 1969, he opened the first Wendy's in Columbus, Ohio, because he wasn't satisfied with other options. To make it distinctive compared to Wendy's competitors, he used fresh meat formed into a square.
The adoption charity Wendy's runs is a big reason I like them. Life is valuable : )
I worked at Arby's for 8 months back in 1977. We used the cash registers that made you use your math skills. In those months my cash register was always accurate and I'm terrible with math. At 66.5 years of age now, I'm no better at math...lol. my prayers go with you with your car troubles. ♥️🙏
The patties are square because they don't cut corners. Wendy's chili on a Sunday was my Oma and my tradition. And yes, the Salad bar was a thing! And I remember the lamps.
OMGOODNESS! Yes! Same! I got hired at a Wendy's in my early 20's and I HATED IT! I actually lasted about a month before I quit. It was AWEFUL!!!! People... PLEASE be nice in general.... but for sure be nice to people in the service industry. One of the hardest jobs I've had. Glad to know we share this experience Jacob! lol
Glad you found the Wendy's museum. I vaguely remember the salad bar at Wendy's in the 80s. Good stuff! enjoyed the video.

I was at that Mr. World competition in Columbus in 1970. I was around 13 years old and the only guys I remember were Dave Draper and Sergio Olivia, but my father remembered that Arnold won it. My main memories of the competition were a funny smell inside the auditorium, and everyone in the audience cheering at end of the competition as all the bodybuilders tried to pose for the audience by constantly moving to the front of the stage in order to block out all the other bodybuilders.
The buffet was called the Superbar. You could make your own baked potatoes and tacos on it. It didn't have burgers or fries on it though.

My very first job was working at Wendy’s. I remember those tables! The chili is amazing. And who doesn’t love a chocolate frosty? Does anyone else notice that below Wendy’s collar,it says MOM. A little hidden message. Yes, Jacob, Wendy’s used to have a salad bar.
LOL, I never worked at a Wendy's but I might have worked at all the other Fast Food joints as a teenager. Your videos always take me back to my youth Jacob, Thanks for another great one!!!

I've been wondering this, too, especially since I think it was a Mold-a-matic machine pin!
Yeah, you definitely wouldn’t want to start taking pieces off and drive off. When I was rear ended, insurance company told me I could drive it to the repair shop. Turns out the damage underneath was so bad it wasn’t safe to even repair so they totaled it. And come to find out, in the Pontiac G5, the battery was in the trunk. So I was driving on a busted, leaking battery. Definitely best to just leave it be and let the insurance adjuster get it all sorted out. Glad to see you’re doing ok and wasn’t injured too bad.
Awesome video! Nice to see your take on some of the great sights in Columbus! I was just there and saw a bunch of these. I wasn't sure how that digital face sculpture inside the convention center worked, thanks for the info!
Love how you're making the best of being stranded in Ohio. Really admire your work ethic and perseverance.
Great adventure in Columbus. Well done. Always enjoy your videos. All the best to you and Jess. Take care.
You’re awesome Jacob! You are staying very positive and making this situation work and still making great content!
That's correct about the chili is left over Hamburgers that was chopped up for the chili....I worked at a Wendy's in PA. I Actually got to talk to Dave Thomas once( our Wendy's was a franchise) I worked as a manager for 8 yrs....everything was fresh! Frosty machine was sanitized every night!
The Reason For The Outer Layer Four-sided Can be Traced back to Wendy's Founder Dave Thomas. In 1969 he opened the first Wendy's In Columbus, Ohio, because he wasn't satisfied with other options. To make it distinctive compared to Wendy's competitors, he used fresh meat formed into a square.
My parents, my brother Austin, and I went to the Original Wendy's in Columbus back years ago. The best thing to try is get a frosty with small fries.
Smart to just let your insurance company handle this. That's what they do. Even if you could drive it somewhere, there would probably be a long wait there too. People are just trying to be helpful but you are doing a great job.
Wendy's did have a soup and Salad bar, as well as a toppings bar. I don't recall a hot food bar there. You may be thinking about the Big Boy Resturants. They did that for a time. I saw the Starry at Kroger BTW.
Wendy's SuperbBar - It was an all you can eat salad bar plus Mexican, Italian and Pizza sections to make tacos, pasta dishes, etc. Oh man I ate that all the time back in college in the late 80s as there was a Wendy's across the street from my campus.
Love the video ! Great job making the best out of a difficult situation! Glad you are ok.
This is gonna show my age, but I actually remember seeing one or two "Where's the Beef?" commercials on TV. 😀 EDIT-- I can't help thinking they re-branded either Slice or Squirt under the new Starry banner. But, I could be wrong. 🤔
I didn’t realize they discontinued Sierra Mist. Love that! Starry is a stupid name. Wonder how they came up with that one? Lol

And it's not that good. Sierra Mist was 100% better.
Dave made the burgers square because he could fit more on the grill that way. White Castle has square burgers as well. Love Wendy's food.
11:41 Dave Thomas wanted his own chain similar to Kewpie's Square Hamburgers, so that is why Wendy's sells square hamburgers.
Jacob I agree with you that everyone really needs to just take a deep breath and take some time out and relax
Looks amazing. I want to do a tour of the Del Taco museum.
Yes Wendy's had a buffet called the Super Bar for a short period. It had salad, Mexican and pasta from what I remember.
Carpetbagger! The KoЯn drop was absolutely amazing. Thank you for making my day! Glad to see you are finally out of Ohio!
I tried Starry a few weeks ago and had no idea it was replacing Sierra Mist til last week. It's the oddest name, I mean, how weird will it sound to say, "I'll have a Sprite or Starry ..." when ordering at a restaurant?! LOL! I'm glad you're making the best out of the situation you have been dealt. As a native of Pennsylvania I will say, "this is why you don't go to Ohio," out of pure LOLsssss!!!
