Hi!
This video is a rather personal review of West Pest by @Cre8audio. A synthesizer in the west coast style for a surprisingly low price, just $249. What does it have to offer? And how true is it to the west coast style pioneered by Don Buchla?

    A cool video on the West Pest. I am going to buy one in the next couple of weeks, definitely. I am looking forward to much fun experimentation. I have fallen in love with west coast synthesis. I have watched several review vids of the west Pest and I find it interesting that you get totally different cool sounds out of it than the other folks do. That tells me that this is very responsive to individual taste and style. I can't wait. I especially like the inclusion of the sequencer/arpeggiator.

    Great to hear that! One thing that is nice about the West Pest is the implementation of the release. It is not vactrols as in a Buchla system (and that was automatic, AFAIK), but you have two separate knobs, one for the release itself, and one for the modulation of the release. I've should have made a point of that in the video. A sound implementation, to make a pun. 🌞

    Actually, you are pretty spot on. East coast synthesis has s strong tendency to use different terminology. That said, east coast usually comes with additional/ different functionality as well. The West Pest, for instance, employs an envelope that involves a low pass gate, hence it is not called an envelope.

  • @javest
    @javest Жыл бұрын

    The West Pest could be clocked from external trigger 1 PPS to move 1 step of the seq for each pulse received in clock in, without any regular sequence of pulse? I'd like to advance 1 step of the seq with one external "out of time" trig

  • @axis_8

    @axis_8

    Жыл бұрын

    I think you have to choose between the internal and the external clock, cannot have both active at the same time. Solution would perhaps be to use an external clock all the time and let that clock be whatever, irregular for example, so you can move that extra step when needed.

It's a 16 pin eurorack internally, and the shell case power of the pest could be reused for another custom 40hp... If I knew I could have not bought the Nifty case and just adapt the internal power adapter with some flying bus cables and that's it!

    great video man. 1 FYI, no offense, this constant hard dry swallowing and other mouth noises are really tough on the ear with headphones. You might want to consider toning it down slightly as it is really distracting. But maybe its just me. Again, thanks for this, made me order one.

    So... I don't get how can this compete with a Behringer Neutron which is around the same price or cheaper if you get it used. Can anybody enlighten me?

  • @axis_8

    @axis_8

    Жыл бұрын

    I've owned a Neutron, and you're absolutely right, in some sense it cannot compete. Neutron is a very solid purchase, if it were a different company producing it, it would've cost twice as much, I think. However, West Pest doesn't really compete, it is built around a sequencer with a wavefolder and a low pass gate in the spirit of Buchla and West Coast synthesis. Neutron doesn't have any of that, it is a typical East Coast synth, albeit a potent one and with one of the largest patch bays there is for a monophonic (paraphonic, actually) synth.
