WEST HAM UNITED: BOLEYN GROUND, UPTON PARK - THE HISTORY

Спорт

THE BOLEYN GROUND, OR UPTON PARK, HOME OF WEST HAM UNITED FROM 1904 UNTIL 2016
In the early 20th century, West Ham played their home matches at the Memorial Ground in Canning Town, but after a dispute over the rent they were forced to look for a new home. They found a bare field used by a Roman Catholic school and soon reached an agreement with the Catholic authorities for its use.
West Ham played their first match at Boleyn Ground on the 1st of September 1904. Just over 10,000 spectators saw the home side beat Millwall 3-0.
Boleyn Ground received its name from a house that stood next to the ground, called Boleyn Castle, and which supposedly had been home to Anne Boleyn. These days Boleyn Ground is more commonly referred to as Upton Park.
The ground was initially a basic affair, but got soon expanded - first in 1919 with a new East Stand and later in 1925 with a new West Stand and terracing at the short ends. This lifted capacity to about 40,000 places.
Boleyn Ground got heavily damaged in the Second World War when it got hit by a V-1 bomb, but was soon rebuilt.
In 1961 a roof was added to the North Bank, which meant that all stands had cover. The ground underwent its last major pre-90s change when in 1969 a new East Stand was built.
Boleyn Ground recorded its highest attendance of 42,322 during a match with Tottenham Hotspur in 1970.
The stadium underwent a major redevelopment in the mid 1990s when it got converted into an all-seater. The works included the construction of two new stands at the short ends and major refurbishments on the other stands. Boleyn Ground received its current shape in 2001 with the opening of a new West Stand, which raised capacity to its current level.
Despite these renovations, Boleyn Ground remained a limited ground with few options for expansion. West Ham therefore started looking into the options of moving away to a new ground, with the London Olympic Stadium soon appearing as the prime candidate.
After a long and drawn-out bidding process, West Ham were finally granted a 99-year lease on the Olympic Stadium in early 2013. Following an extensive redevelopment, West Ham moved into their new home in the summer of 2016.
West Hame played their last game at Boleyn Ground on 10 May 2016, receiving Manchester United for a league fixture (3-2 for the home side).
In September 2016, demolition of the stadium commenced. The stadium will be replaced by a housing development.

These old grounds need protecting, wont be long till every ground becomes an 'arena' and looses all their character, the modern commercial world of football moves further away from its roots as the seasons tick by

This place being demolished is heartbraking. Having maine road, highbury, and upton park taken down i feel really takes away the working class feel from there great clubs. And they all have generic modern stafiums with no character in my opinion. Im a rangers fan and you can Say what you want about the scottish leagues quality and i know its shit but the league and the clubs have a really passionate and old fashioned vive around them and a lot of that has to do with the older more traditional stadiums i hope this never hapens to ibrox or for that matter celtic park as they are historic grounds in wich when you walk into you get goosebumbs as you know your surrounded by history

Born and bred in Plaistow, my old primary school was St Edwards on castle street, obviously demolished to build the Bobby Moore stand and I believe they built a new primary school up the road, left there in 1987 to start st Bon’s secondary school, absolutely fantastic memories, such a shame they demolished the old stadium, it’s heartbreaking really 😢

Was lucky enough to visit the place once in my life as a neutral who won a competition for a ticket. I’m Arsenal but went to watch West Ham vs Palace around 2015, just about went before it got demolished. Coming out the ground you got a proper East End working class feel from the fans coming out the game all speaking cockney love it

I've only been there once , game against Everton, Tony cottee scored for hammers, I was in the stand before it changed to Bobby Moore stand, remember the passion and love for the place, so glad I sampled it. That was back in 86.

You mentioned in the description the East stand being rebuilt in 69 but didn't show anything in the video. Are there no photos of it being built. I started going in 87 and my dad got us season tickets the next season in the Panini family enclosure. We moved down to the chicken run when they put the seats in and stayed there until the last season. Sadly missed.

Started going to Upton Park back in the mid 1970's , night games were the best . But i think with the new all seater modern stadiums , you don't get the same atmosphere you did with the old grounds . I mean Highbury , Maine Road even the old Wembley had better atmospheres than the new Stadiums do . And why do all new stadiums look the same ?

Only went to the Boelyn 3 times as an away fan circa late 90's early 2000's nice ground. Great Atmosphere. Haven't been to the new Stadium. Been outside though.I have heard some bad feedback from people who have been there.couldn't they redevelop Upton Park? Any way 40,000 odd capacity was not bad anyway.Chelski 's ground is not much bigger.

Nothing like Upton Park. Our old home had a certain energy. You could feel the electricity in the air, it’s difficult to describe. All away teams would tell how intimidating it was to go to Upton Park for that reason. The new place does not have that unfortunately. It’s just too big, too far away from the pitch. Feels empty and flat. Hope this answered your question

@@Tom-mq6jp cheers its sad it really is its like looking at foreign grounds miles from the pitch im sorry it rips the soul out of the club Our problem venky and kean we went from a well run mid table club to a joke Of what we were I think a lot of clubs will go under when footy starts proper again Take care regards adrian

All that extra redevelopment of the ground in the last 20 years plus the astronomical costs involved at a time when West Ham were very much a yo-yo club. As a result, little investment in the squad certainly until the likes of Rio, Joe Cole & Frank Lampard Jr came through from the youth team in the late 1990s. So all that expense, all the underachievement on the pitch; selling our best players & for what in the end!?? So they could tear down the stadium & move us away from our spiritual home. C'mon Hammers fans, step back & think about it for a minute. Can you honestly look at yourselves & still say you haven't been mugged off by successive owners??
